Mad Max: Fury Road - Part 2

And that is something that pisses me the hell off about Hollywood. You can be a pedophile like Woody Allen or Polanksi, or a woman beater like Sean Penn and still enjoy stellar careers and accolades. But if tou happen to SAY something in a drunk rage, you're the devil. The contradiction is horrific and disgusting.
I never liked the "he's just drunk" excuse. Getting drunk doesn't change the person you are, it doesn't make you say things. You don't say things that aren't in your heart.

Eh, that's no necessarily true as I'm sure we've all been or had drunk friends say stupid things that doesn't necessarily mean they 100% believe what they're saying. Yes, I'm sure there's a bit of conflicted feelings (his father is nuts holocaust denier remember) but I don't think it's as extreme as it seems.

This is a man who is best friends with Jodie Foster (gay), Robert Downey Jr (half jewish) who's married to Susan Downey (jewish) and also good friends of Steven Spielberg.

I agree. I don't think alcohol makes you suddenly go on a hateful tirade about Jews if you don't already have anti-Semitic feelings.

Gibson was probably influenced in his views of Jews by his anti-Semitic Holocaust denier father. He might try to suppress his feelings, and he might believe he doesnt have them most of the time, but IMO them coming out when he's drunk says they're in there somewhere.

"It’s material that’s really frightening — we didn’t have a script." What does she mean by that exactly?

Great interview - no beating around the bush.

Reportedly Miller basically just storyboarded everything.

Wow, that's excellent. That's pretty experimental in terms of direction, something rare in such big budget films. I'm even more excited now.

Being drunk, pissed off, or a mix of the two isn't an "excuse". He still said those things. But I 100% disagree with the idea that you "don't say things that aren't in your heart". That is a completely disingenuous statement.

I'm with you on this one. It's dwelling somewhere deep in his consciousness and I think he's managed to suppresse it.

Here's another faux-analyzing on my part: I also think as he reached middle-age, and maybe he didn't realized it, that he became his father. Something he didn't want to become.

It is scary at how quickly that can sneak up on someone. My father used to dread becoming his father. Now, he is my grandfather. It is kind of scary. I'm kind of worried about myself.

I don't know what it is, or if it's the lack of self awareness of one's actions and behavior. Or if there's a switch in your mind that triggers something like that. That's why I try to be as mindful as possilbe.

I think one thing that can help is stay happy, don't be so cynical, and continue to learn and explore new things even as you get older. If not that you'll end up being stuck in your ways, and end up being something that you would've dreaded as a kid.

My fear is becoming a parant/adult figure from an early Spielberg movie or a John Hughes film: Cluless and a square. Or an adult character from 'Footloose'.

That's what I think too. There's also a difference between liking someone in general and "getting them" as well as fully respecting them. I can believe Mel is friends with gay and Jewish people, but doesn't fully "get" or respect them. Or that he believes his friends are the exception and that it's "other" gay and Jewish people who are the problem, and he just makes sweeping generalizations about everyone-who-isn't-his-friend-but-when-you're-drunk-you're-unable-to-communicate-that-distinction. :oldrazz:

Which still makes him a homophobe and anti-Semitic, BTW, if he makes sweeping generalizations and spouts hate toward a group of people, no matter if he's friends with a few or not.

They believe them enough they exist in their minds to say. That kind of stuff doesn't come from nowhere. And please don't come with the, "I have plenty of black friends" defense.

So those words just came from the ether? BS. It is in there somewhere.

Yeah I think it's always been in him but he was able to control it as a younger man. It doesn't help that he was super charismatic and charming. As he got older, he became the 'grumpy old man' and all of that he was holding in just got released.

It's a complicated thing because I do think Gibson is good guy. But a good guy with many demons.

Tom Hardy spent most of the early 2000s blitzed out of his mind, so I cautiously assume no anti-Semitic/racist/homophobic meltdowns are hiding in his closet somewhere.

Things build. When you get drunk, inhibitions disappear. But I totally agree about age. As you get older, you really do start to not give a crap.

Unless he is so into method acting, he took on those traits to play the role of Max.

Well, he also wasn't famous enough for anyone to give a crap, but I think anti-Semitism doesn't get you far in Hollywood. :cwink: He probably would have been blacklisted early on if that was the case.

Yeah it can be hard. My husband tries WAY harder than me to control his temper (takes breaks, meditates, has a hobby he does for hours every day), but he's still quite moody despite all of that work. Sometimes how we're wired or how we were raised as kids sticks with us.

But in that case, you try extra hard to avoid your triggers. Mel shouldn't have picked up that bottle if he wanted to keep that streak going. My husband very rarely picks up a beer, and he never has more than one at a time.

I shudder to imagine what Daniel Day-Lewis would do if he were cast as a serial killer or a Nazi or something.
:funny:

I'm not excusing what Penn, Polanski, or Allen did, but they had a leverage that Gibson didn't have: the lack of internet..the lack of social media.

In fact, I had no idea what Penn did till I conducted some research.

We do in the live of the 'aha, gotcha' age, such as the new host of Daily Show and his tweets. Or Jon Hamm. Which is to me, unfair.

Holy ****. I knew Sean Penn was a prick, but I didn't realise how big of a prick until you guys mentioned it.

How is Hollywood okay with him?!

What about Penn?

What about Penn?

He tied Madonna to a chair and beat the **** out of her.

When I posted about Gibson, it was about him being gorgeous. Why ya'll bring up his personal stuff? I love the actor and the director. Only really interested in that side and don't care for the other. This goes for all actors. EH.

Back in the 80's: He tied up Madonna, and beat her for hours. When he had to use the bathroom she broke free and escaped via the balcony.
