Mad Max: Fury Road - Part 3

I've watched two of his films since his return. I severely disagree. Mel just doesn't have the spark he had in the 80s and early 90s. He's still a good actor but it's beyond obvious that Gibson is on the decline.

2010 - Edge of Darkness (Martin Campbell) Excellent performance. His eyes alone were brilliant. Film coulda been better but Mel was flawless.

2011 - The Beaver (Jodie Foster)
They robbed him of an Oscar Nomination. Its criminal how great of a performance he gave & how the press chose to focus on his personal troubles rather than the stellar delivery he gave in the film.

2012 - Get The Gringo (Adrian Grunberg)
Leave it to Mel to make a low budget action flick into a fantastic black comedy and yet another display of powerhouse acting.

2013 - Machete Kills (Robert Rodriguez)
In his small role as the film's villain, Mel eats his campy self-spoofing character for breakfast, making his time on screen the best the film had to offer. He's just awesome in it.

2014 - Expendables 3 (Patrick Hughes)
You got over a dozen action icons lined up once more for a forgettable two hours. But then there's Mel Gibson, who makes you CRAVE his return to mainstream cinema the moment he shows his weathered mug in the film. Mel stole that whole movie.

Up next is Blood Father from Mesrine director Jean Francois Richet.

I can understand if the two movies you watched were the bottom two since the roles are limited, but the first three are prime examples of how damn good this guy is. I recommend you check 'em out.

Mel's almost back. Its just a matter of time before people get over the fact that he's human and like other humans has personal opinions that aren't PC.

I don't care for any of his personal stuff to be honest.

Mel made one of my all time favorites. I still dig him as an actor and director.

Maybe you're going mad yourself, Picard. Ever since they disbanded the Star Trek forum, you've been eating two headed lizards, as you search the wasteland for guzzle line!

Mel needs..I don't know what he needs to be back, but it's almost back. The stigma with him is still thick, however.

Plus he's got that Hacksaw Ridge film with Andrew Garfield coming up. That could be a nice return to him directing at least.

I don't care for Mel Gibson as a person, but he's still been delivering good performances, imo.

^ Of that above list, the only one I've seen was Get the Gringo. I thought it (and he) was really surprising and fun.

whatever goes on in Mel's personal life is his business alone. it was really disgusting how the media & Hollywood went on a witch hunt towards Mel.

the guy is a fantastic actor and a talented director

It doesn't help he threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend. That's worse than any of the anti-Jew stuff he said.

I have moved on.

Is that cool?

How awesome is this movie?! I wonder if SW will be as well seen by the critics.

Gibson dated an emotionally manipulative woman, who knew how to press his buttons. Where her manipulation ends and his temper begins is hard to say, but the mainstream media does not hesitate in deciding exactly where.

I still think Gibson is the superior Max.

IMHO, the role is not a Tom Hardy type role. Needed to be a lot less cerebral.

Can anyone confirm if this will be released in China at all? That is a huge market to be absent from.

There's currently an internet fixation with Hardy playing every possible role available. The guy's good but not suitable for every role (Punisher, Cable, Apocalypse, etc). At first when I heard he'd been cast as Max I thought he was all wrong. After seeing him in the film I dug what he did.

Nowhere near as good as Mel, but good.

It was nice hearing Miller did want Gibson originally but clearly had to to abandon that idea with Mel being made out to be public enemy #1 via the press.

We were going to do it with Mel and we were within reach of doing it with Mel. Then 9/11 happened and the American dollar fell against the Australian dollar. By the time we got there, not only had Mel hit all the turbulence in his life, but this is not a ‘Mad Max’ in which he’s an old warrior. He’s meant to be that same contemporary warrior. I guess in the same way that James Bond had been played by various people, it was time to hand over the mantle.

I don't buy the "he was too old bit." It was clearly "this guy is hated by the press so he'll compromise the movie."

As for Hardy, I'd like to see him in a more Max-centric sequel where he drops the odd voice and just speaks normal.

I just did some research and found out that, sadly, it won't be. The relationships between Immortal Joe and the war boys alone is already a more than enough reason for China to drop the film.

Saw it a second time today and enjoyed Hardy's performance more with a better understanding of what he was looking to say (stripped of humanity, crazed, etc...) - but damn did I envision how cool it would have been to see Mel in this movie as Max with all that great action... nostalgia had me by the balls.

Absorbing all the sheer practical stunt goodness and was enough for a 2nd viewing.

When I saw the trailer, I thought that the sandstorm was probably the climax of the movie and was disappointed they showed the climax in the trailer.

Yeah, my friend who is a big Mad Max fan was explaining to me that it's perfectly fine that Max really had no arc. His take was that Max is like the embodiment of chaotic good...he gets dropped into situations that are none of his business but he can't look away...and then he's off to get tossed into another situation...so the character almost HAS to be left in a position similar to where he started so he can end up in a new adventure.

To crib from Outlaw Vern, Max's MO is to watch his own back at all costs, but his innate goodness always trips that up. Then he's off again, to some other pocket of people that'll tell legends of his deeds.

 to the outlaw vern mention. I've been a regular on his site for years. A big reason you never see me regularly discussing movies over here is because that site already gives me my fix in that regard.

I really did like this film, however I didn't think it was as great as everyone seems to be saying. It's pretty good and the action sequences, cinematography and performances were exceptional, but there wasn't enough focus on Max himself. A little more backstory about the Citadel would have been nice too. The movie seemed to be in a huge rush to get to the action whereas I think it would have benefitted by taking a breather in the beginning.

Either way, it's motivated me to finally watch the other three Mad Max films this week.

Someone must be an uber Hardy fan. Poor Picard has been banned for upholding Mel.

I think the Mel Gibson thing just boils down to money. Nobody is gonna finance a 150 million dollar budget movie (plus marketing) with Mel Gibson as the main star of the movie. Tom Hardy+Charlize Theron on the other hand, that's a quite hot duo at the moment. They could probably have done a similar story with Mel Gibson, but no way they would have gotten that budget to work with, and I don't think the movie would have drawn in as much money.

When it comes to Mel Gibson, I love him ... As an actor. Not too crazy about him as a person. That said, though, I think he deserves a comeback if so many other POS actors are granted second and third chances. Everybody thought Charlie Sheen's "winning" and "tiger blood" antics were hilarious four years ago, when it's been proven that he has an abusive nature towards women. And that's just one example of the moral "cherry picking" that Hollywood is a part of.

Anyway ... Back to the actual movie ... I thought Tom Hardy's Max was great for this particular movie. I think Mel Gibson could have pulled off this "feral" Max, but I'm happy with Tom Hardy as well.

Also, I can't stop listening to the soundtrack of this movie. I listened to it while working out earlier, and it was a great motivator. :)
