Mad Max: Fury Road - Part 6

Just what in the world? :funny:

The way I see it, the story has to drive the movie. If the movie is driven by the theme ahead of the story, there won't be much movie to watch. :oldrazz: But the story the movie wants to tell CAN be driven very much by themes. But it's definitely secondary to the story.

Fury Road has feminist themes, but I don't believe Miller set out specifically to make a feminist movie, to thumb his nose at MRAs or whatever. He wrote the story, wrote the characters, and this is what came out.

As a feminist myself, I actually prefer that feminist work evolve this way, which is almost unconscious. That means the message is really starting to seep through the culture in a way that we don't really have to think too hard about it anymore. :D

Tarantino thinks its one of the best movies of 2015? maybe even the best to him?

''no s.. Sherlock'' to this news. this was obvious since the first comic con trailer. Tarantino likes oldschool movies with practical effects. this movie has crazy vehicle action filmed on real location. it was obvious

What was going on with Miss Giddy while she was ridding with Joe? Was she dead and being used as an ornament?

Such a gorgeous movie, I think it will be getting watched for years to come, I just can't wait to see what the sequel will bring us, wish it would come sooner,

She was an old woman not used to the toxic air outside of the citadel vault, she needed clean air ( you see an henchman gaving her air ), Joe took her as a leverage I guess.

I love sassy Kane.

I just revisited the film for the first time on bluray. I bought the anthology set the day it came out but at the time only watched the special features.

The stuntwork in this film is still so impactful even on my home TV. I felt the same desire to almost duck out of the way. With the way so much of the characterization and story is told in entirely visual terms either through design or action I can't help but feel Fury Road is basically the entire reason movies exist. Obviously there are other kinds of movies that are also great but so many great movies were also great books or could just as easily be plays instead. While I"m sure a decent comic could be made just from publishing this films story boards, I can't help but feel that film is well and truly the ideal form of this story, of this world.

This is already a classic.

I have to go back to DK and say that so easily. That feeling, mayne.

His neck fluff is almost merging with his chest hair in that one...

Noticing new things with this movie all the time.

Has anyone noticed when Furiosa approaches Max in the night to offer him to go with them across the salt Max is drawing something on a piece of cloth which he quickly puts away. Later when he catches them up on the bikes this piece of cloth contains the map to the citadel.

I wonder was he going storm it on his own? As he said to Furiosa the night before he would make his own way? Did he then have a change of heart the next morning? I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since noticing it on my last viewing.

As a woman who has no use for feminism or man hating, I don't see this as a feminist movie. I've never watched Mad Max so I don't know how woman usually are handled, but I saw one strong woman one strong man who needed to work together to accomplish something.
I was intrigued when I heard about the tension between the wives and Furiosa, it reminded me of stay at home mom's vs working moms debate.

I hate being a contrarian and while it's an impressive film with all the practical effects/stunts and the cinematography, the story was pretty paper thin and it was just one long action scene...Michael Bay gets shredded for style over substance and while Fury Road has more of a story than your typical Bay fare i'd say it follows what Bay does to some extent, even if Fury Road has little touches and things here and there to add an over arcing message...

that being said, I enjoyed the hell out of it and had me on an adrenaline rush.

He's ripping off my beard.

@Punisher: As you say. The Bay movies I've seen have been pretty heavy on action, but in each one there's come a point where I felt fatigued by it all. I'm on my 4th or so watch of Fury Road and it hasn't set in yet. I think the majority of reviews find more nuance in the main players than what you get from Bay's movies.

The stories in Bay's films aren't thin or straight forward they are incoherent, his characters lacking not just depth but motivation.

Also there is a different between story and plot. Plot wise the film is indeed everyone goes out...everyone comes back. Along the way though there are constant shifts of allegiances and a building of trust.

Max and Furiosa begin trying to beat each other to death, end up forced to work together to survive and come to respect and rely upon one another.

Nux begins as a whole cloth believer in Immortan Joe, has his faith shattered and his identity challenged and ends up sacrificing himself for the complete opposite cause. He dies for himself and to save his friends rather than the glory of Immortan Joe.

On a similar note, take the Empire Strikes Back. Plot-wise, that film is literally just "Everyone gets attacked on Hoth, Everyone goes to Bespin, Luke takes a side trip to Dagobah." Disney's Frozen is "Everyone goes up the mountain. Everyone goes back down the mountain.'

I am a fan of Bay's movies myself. They are great as mindless entertainment, but Fury Road is on a whole other level, several of them in fact.

I guess I don't see it how some people do. The characters have motivation and they grow, there IS a story there with a few nice touches and nuances, but it still doesnt ring to me the way it does with others. Yeah I can see the feminist argument, the character development and the arcs, but what enthralled me was the visuals/cinematography and the chaotic nature of it. It was a nail biting, edge of your seat adrenaline rush.

Again, I still enjoyed the film a lot and hope there is a sequel. :)

You know I actually think it has a chance for a nomination in at least one of the big categories be it actress, director, or picture, but I don't see it getting noms for actor or supporting actor though. That said I think it will stop with the nominations it wont win anything for the big categories id love to be surprised though.

Not only a nom in one major category, it got a nom in two!
