I think that would be more likely if he said it to another character rather than the viewers. We have had unreliable narrators before, but the way it was used sure seemed to be simply explaining who this guy is for the newcomers to the series.
Much like others here, until we hear something from Miller personally or something in a sequel that says otherwise, I'm going to treat him as the same character in the other three. In the absence of other evidence, the simplest solution is the best one, I say.
