I found Hammer slightly less dull than usual in this film but he still isn't an actor that would have me rushing to see a movie that he was a leading man in. I thought Cavill was really impressive as a cool collected gentleman spy. Cavill's solo impressed me the most.

Yeah, I liked Cavill in this. I just feel the movie needed better pacing, a bit more action and wittier dialogue to really work. But Henry did what he could.

Also, just looked back through this thread and saw that slumcat finally got banned. Good work, mods!

This came out on DVD/BD/download this week, and I really like it. I think it's unfair to compare it to Mission Impossible or Bond. Instead of a straight-up action flick, it's explicitly going for a different vibe. It'd also be unfair to stack up Mr. & Mrs. Smith against the Cruise or Craig vehicles. While also not a comedy like Mr. & Mrs. Smith, the closest analogue which comes to mind is a stylistic caper film like The Italian Job. I think the Vanity Fair review posted by theotherme gets it right, and Man From U.N.C.L.E. is my favorite spy film since Salt.

I personally liked 3/4ths of the film coz I could see that it was more a spy-mystery film than a spy-action film like Rogue Nation or Kingsman. Though they tried to put in action and money chases in the end and that did feel a little bit lacking. They should have got Cavill to fight a Batista-like muscle guy instead of the husband and that would have possibly made the story round off better.

was just thinking about this the other day. Really wish it made more money because I think they couldve really built off things in a sequel.

I would say this is an okay movie, it certainly is not bad but I do not see my self ever watching this again. It did get a tad boring for me and I started to think to myself "I hope this is over soon".

I can appreciate what it was trying to be.

I finally saw this yesterday and... Quite enjoyable. I even thought Hammer was a little more loose and compelling than usual. Cavill was on fire. All that said... I felt it was a notch or two bellow OCEAN'S 11 and more than anything I think THAT is the film that Ritchie was trying to vibe off of. Don't get it twisted, its good, just not great and it easily could have been if they had turned the wit and tension knobs up. I would recommend it though. It is fun and breezy, Cavill hold it together and the production values and design are great.

Perhaps the biggest problem is that the villains are just kind of there.

Yeah, the villains aren't particularly threatening or interesting. Mustachioed racecar guy was really lame, and even Elizabeth Debicki isn't that interesting.

''Don't forget to take it like a *****'' had me laughing out loud, I gotta admit. Cavill was quite funny in this flick, on top of being the ultra slick and suave Solo.

This above all. I would have beefed up the writing when it came to the villains for sure. Debicki was stylish but she was neither fun nor menacing, very cardboard cutout as a big bad.

I finally got round to seeing at least part of this. I found it really boring and slow. It dragged a lot in places and seemed to be aimless and lacking in plot. Also, some action scenes lacked any tension. For example, why did they decide to film this boat chase from the point of view of Solo eating some dinner in a truck with the chase seen in his peripheral vision? And then they decided to stick this Italian music over it when he drove that truck onto that boat and went to rescue Kuryakin?

At least Alicia Vikander was nice to look at. But the film was really meandering and sometimes people didn't seem to be doing much of anything. I'm not surprised it didn't do well. It seems to lack much substance at all. It's as if Guy Richie only thought about the style of the film and forgot to actually give it a plot or only had a couple of pages to go on and padded the rest of it out with filler.

The ending that seems like they want to make sequels also falls flat.

"You're going to be part of a new team. The codename is U.N.C.L.E "

"Movie ends"

Also I wasn't a fan of the flashy edits for the climax of the movie. Cutting here and there for the bike and the buggy chase was pointless

Yeah, a lot of the scenes, particularly the action, really fell flat. But even the attempts at comedy weren't that great. That scene with Hammer and Vikander in the hotel room looked like it was going to be hilarious in the trailer, but in the film, it just dragged. Guy Ritchie really dropped the ball on this film, though I guess I shouldn't be surprised. His last great film was Snatch. He hasn't done anything close to it since. I liked the first Sherlock Holmes and parts of RockNRolla, but even those movies pale in comparison to his earlier stuff. I think Madonna ruined him.

I think Ritchie ruined what could've been a good franchise. If it were made a bit more conventionally with better pacing and editing, and even musical choices, it would've worked better. The end of the boat chase was one such example. It felt absolutely dead with that music playing over it when Solo drove his truck into the water and went to save Kuryakin. And it was dumb to film him eating a sandwich etc.

And way too much talk without much urgency to any of the scenes, particularly at the race track.

And even when action was teased, like Kuryakin going into the toilet to beat up those guys, that was cut off with nothing shown at all, and Kuryakin just exiting the door. So many scenes were anti-climactic, as if they ran out of budget or something.

Yeah, it was strange. It was like it was trying to be an action movie without any action in it.

"comedy"

Worked for some, didn't for others. I thought that scene was hilarious

I liked this but I do agree that it needed some action. That whole split screen, storming the castle thing couldve been done better

I'm fine with the boat chase part but this whole film just didn't work for me at times. I thought the final chase and castle sequence was quite terrible.

Can we stop trying to make Armie Hammer a star now?

Why was he even first in the credits? Is he considered a bigger star than Henry Cavill?

He had the "Lone Ranger" and "the social network" on his resume

Enough to put him at the front

Going back to the humor falling flat

-the uncle burning to death in the background. I think two better actors with more charisma could have made it more funny

- yeah the castle assault would have been better if they showed it. Once again it looked like they ran out of money

The boat scene was my favorite of the film. I thought it was hilarious, personally. The rest of the comedy was hit or miss but that sequence totally worked for me.

My wife had no idea who he was before UNCLE....now she wants to see his other movies.

She had no interest in seeing UNCLE at first (said it didn't look interesting)....I talked her into seeing it when it hit the local dollar theater....she loved it, bought the DVD when it was released, and has watched it at least twice since then.
