Pragmatic Pete looks at something, determines if it is worth his while, and then either continues to deal with it or ignores it from then on....because he is being pragmatic about it.

Gloomy Gus looks at something, determines it is no good, and then proceeds to tell everyone it is no good (even if they say they like it) because he is gloomy Gus and everyone should be gloomy like he is.
Not gloomy like me, pragmatic like me.

Finally saw it today. I can see why it's not doing well, sadly. It's a very average, by the numbers spy film. Cavill, Hammer and the other actors do what they can but the material is just okay at best. The film, I felt, also had serious pacing issues. It takes a long time to really get rolling and even when it does, it's still underwhelming. It's a shame really; the movie looks great and the cast is good. It just falls a bit flat.

Saw this earlier as well. Nice costumes and the cast is total eye candy but sadly I'll add this to my list of "Good trailer, bad movie".

Yeah it's totally watchable and decent, but it just never fully gets off the ground.

Yeah, it's a shame. I feel bad for the actors involved because I think they could have really had something special here if the script had been up to par and the pacing wasn't so poor. The movie seemed like it couldn't decide whether it wanted to be silly and fun or serious. RockNRolla had the same problem. I'm starting to think Ritchie just doesn't have it anymore.

Looks like the film might make at least its $75 million budget back internationally. There won't be a sequel, but I guess that's not a total failure, money-wise.

I just wish the movie had been better. A lot of people have criticized it for "style over substance", but I felt like it was even lacking in that department. I mean, everything looked great (the costumes, the sets, the locations), but it should have been more cool and slick, so to speak. So many scenes just kind of dragged. It's like that scene with Alicia Vikander getting drunk in the hotel room with Hammer. In the trailers, it looked funny, but in the film, it seemed like it was trying to be funny but couldn't figure out how to do that. I don't know. The whole movie was just an odd experience. Maybe I expected too much from it.

I think the big thing for me to me was that there was not that much cool action. The car chase at the end was interesting but the ending of it was kinda lame. The opening chase and the boat chase was cool too.

I think for spending 75 mill put in some badass gunfights or hand to hand combat scenes. That wouldve drawn more people in I think

EDIT: You know I just realized all the cool action scenes were vehicle chase scenes.

Yeah, that was strange. And two of the action scenes the film did have (the boat chase and the scene towards the end where the soldiers stormed the compound) we could barely see because of weird editing. It was just odd.

I really enjoyed it. Loved the leads, and Ritchie as always, directed the crap out of it. Little thin on the script, but the characters were great. Cavill needs more roles. Dude can act.

I actually thought that scene was cool, but they couldve still had other action in the movie.

Cavill is really good. I hope he doesnt get caught in the "Superman curse"

I think all the main cast are really good actors and deserve more roles

Agreed, all three are great. Alicia is getting the roles, but Armie seems to be struggling. Which sucks, I think he is great.

Armie Hammer is in that special club with Taylor Kitsch, Sam Worthington, and Jai Courtney.

Except he has charisma and can actually act. I wouldn't group him with them at all.

I definitely would not.

Hammer in Reaper alone was better than anything I've seen from Worthington or Courtney.

Kitsch isnt bad either in Friday Night Lights. He's really charismatic in that. I dont know what the hell he's doing with his career

I HATED Hammer in Reaper (that's where my general dislike for his performances started, actually) and at least found Courtney very likable in Spartacus, so yeah, I'm just gonna have to completely disagree there. I agree that Kitsch was good in FNL, so the only ones of that bunch I've never seen any range or charisma from in any role are Hammer and Sam Worthington. But I'd put them ALL in the same boat of, "Stop Trying to Make These Guys Leading Men."

I love Hammer, so I completely disagree. I hated him on Reaper, but in a good way. Same for the Social Network. He won me over in The Lone Ranger and U.N.C.L.E.

Hammer was great in social network and easily the best part about the Lone Ranger I don't get why he gets so much hate. Saying he is on par with Sam worthington is not even close to being correct

I'd rank the 5 top billed performances in the following order

Vikander
Debicki
Grant
Hammer
Cavill

I think a lot of interest in the film might have been from DC movie fans who were interested in seeing the Superman actor in another role or succeed in another role because it can only help the DC movie universe.

It did not deliver on those fronts. I think both Hammer and Cavill were mis-cast. But Hammer still did a decent job. He played it for laughs. Cavill was decent too but nothing great or nothing that will suddenly bring him great scripts or anything.

Hammer was actually funny though and might get some comedic roles from this.

Vikander of course is the most successful of the 3, she's getting films left and right. She already had lead roles in acclaimed dramas Ex Machina and Testament of Youth this year. She has a role in the Bradly Cooper film Burnt and also had lead roles in two highly buzzed prestige dramas with great casts - Tulip Fever and The Danish Girl. She could be up for Oscars for both. She also has Derek Cianfrance's new film with Rachel Weisz and Fassbender. And has also been offered the female lead in the new Bourne film. And she has to decline a lot of roles.

Hammer too has a romantic drama in the can. He has the lead role in a Stanley Tucci film with Geoffrey Rush. He has the lead role in a war epic by Nate Parker. He has a role in the new Tom Ford movie with Michael Shannon, Amy Adams, Aaron-Taylor Johnson (another superhero actor), Jake G, Kim Basinger, etc. And a lead role in the Ben Wheatley film.

Cavill has... Justice League of America.

I know Cavill fans will come here and say that OH he doesn't need the money and he's rolling in money or he does what he wants to do or he is content, but there is no question that the other actors are far more successful. I guess it depends upon what the fans of the stars are content with - whether they are fans of looks or acting or the films of the stars or whatever.

You know slumcat, for a guy who seems to think Cavill is a mediocre actor with a career that's going nowhere, you sure seem to post about him a lot.

There's really not much difference. They've all had one or two decent-to-good performances and a bunch of "blah" in between.

I really enjoyed Hammer in this movie, The Lone Ranger, and I liked his "Prince Charming" in Mirror, Mirror.
