Marvel should make a "Runaways" Movie.

Captain America for one has the potential to kick 24's ass and Daredevil would make a great Law and Order type of show with the Daredevil persona actually being used as a tool to solve the cases. Let there be a reveal later that The Kingpin's behind most of it but hey, that kind of stuff belongs in another thread.

I disagree, Runaways was for a long time just one long continuing story, while other heroes tend to have self contained storylines with an undisclosed amount of time between them. Not to say that not all heroes could be adapted to TV.

Although this might be because I didnt read Runaways at the beginning. I went back and caught up with it all at once.

So did I but the stories seemed to be pretty self contained but with overall arcs. That can be translated to an entire season. One big arc with self contained stories each ep.

Some comics work differently though. Like Captain America and Daredevil. One arc equals one episode. Runaways' stories are more self contained though. They just happen to be part of a bigger arc so I think one issue=one ep would work for them.

Ouch a half hour show... it would hurt me everytime it went off... I'm so spoiled... but that makes me think of a further benchmark: roughly 1 page per minute of television. Wow.

So what are the chances of getting big names as the parents, doing one-four episodes as guest stars? Seeing Ving Rhames as Mr. Wilder or Brent Spiner as Mr. Stein would make me pretty danged happy.

Wait... what if they got actors who are known FOR those subgenres to play the parents!!! That would own!!!

But that's too casting centric, and those threads tend to become useless beds of 'my favorite actor'isms...

Allow me a minute to wax upon what is affordable and not affordable, SFX wise...
Alex Wilder: Well... aside from the hairdresser to take care of all that hair, pretty affordable indeed.
Nico Minorou: Hmm... well we've got the staff effect, which can be obscured to a point but it has to be shown directly at least once, it'll be hard to coordinate body movement with a CGI staff sticking out of someone (and someone being still while a staff comes out of them for the first time is silly) but it's doable.
Chase Stein: Pyrotechnics and X-Ray vision? Not only is it doable, but it's been done... often and easily. No sweat.
Karolina Dean: Uh... doing this, and doing it believeably will be pretty intense. The glowing in and of itself is not a big deal, but the actual energy effects, especially the forcefield and binding abilities of the older Deans... it just doesn't seem so easy. I guess her powers will 'grow slowly.'
Gert Yorkes: No sweat.
Old Lace: An extreme sweat. Animatronics are no joke, and all CGI dinos are corny as all get out, and lets not forget how often Old Lace is seen up close full body. Even today while the CGI is more manageable, doing the mocap for this kinda crap is no joke. If there's anything I see not happeneing, it's this.
Molly Hayes: If that cruddy Zoom can do it, so can this.
Victor: Electric hands? Electronics manipulating... even big metal panels flying... all doable.
Xavin: Shapeshifting can be dubious, but I think they've got it down to a workable science now.

The good thing about Xavin is he wouldnt be around for much later in the series. By then the series would hopefully pick up a fan base and warrant a higher budget.

Old Lace and Karolina do serve a problem. Karolina is fixable. They could even deal without the human torch like aura. But Old Lace is definitly a problem. They might need to get rid of him altogether. Or maybe not bring him on missions, leave him as the hostel watchdog or something and we'll see very little of him (at least until a higher budget comes along).

I think that all these guys are usable on the show. The budget doesn't even have to be much more than Smallville's, with a half hour format. Imagine about 22 half hour episodes as opposed to Smallville's 22 hour long episodes. The budget can be used really well like this.

Yeah, Old Lace is the linchpin... conveniently, they DON'T take Old Lace out too often, and I think there are some animatronic + CGI techniques that could quickly and cheaply present Old Lace in group and reaction shots with the occasional attack.

Let's also agree, some effort has to be made, or else it's not runaways. Perhaps a lot of Old Lace's activities can be dealt with like Jessica from Heroes. You see the initial blow, and when we return to the scene, she's gone and you have bodies ripped in half on the floor and blood covering the walls. I think cutting to a scene Old Lace chowing down on some liver would be a very interesting way of resolving a combat issue.

So, yeah, animatrnic head, tail and back machine with room to CGI in the legs and their movements, lifted from a suitably complex dinosaur walking simulator. Feed it the terrain, it produce natural movements that an animator can touch up when need be. Meanwhile the dino herself and harness are portable and flexible enough to be fed, stroked lovingly, blink and crane the head in disbelief, change posture, wag the tail around and convincingly bite.

But, yes, sparingly so. I'm just saying it can be well done when done.

Another oddity... The Gibborim.
Did anyone ever watch Buffy? Were they able to do crazy otherworldly stuff often?

I think it might work better as a tv series since they'll always be on the run but i suppose a movie would be cool too.

the show should be like buffy continuity... many episodes are self contained, yet can also reference past ones.. and have big seasonal archs...

they would all be teens to some degree.. chase being the oldest.. chase/victor/gerty/karolina/and nico you might be able to get away with older actors who look younger... but molly needs to be young.

i wouldnt do super hero cameos though... at least not the big ones, i think they can easily get away with the skrulls, cloak and dagger, and even ultron if need be.

old lace is doable with CG and animatronics.. hopefully more animatronics.

the show i kinda see geared torwards the CW to be honest.. but it probably can't be due to WB/DC connection...


i also have 2 other show ideas in the works...

ESU, which would essentially be spider-mans "smallville" but better.. because that was spideys actual hay day, of the silver age. The best villains, storylines, and supporting cast was around that time.

the other i think is genious... i title it ..
"The Bugle", its an hour show based on the lives of the bugle employees in a "super powered" nyc.

the cast would include.. J. Jonah jameson, robbie robertson, betty brant, glory grant, sally floyd, ben urich, and kat farrell. I'd have it play out like a "cop drama" so to speak, and in many way it would be "Front line" the tv series.. the comic does well.. and many fans love the cast.. plus its new idea that hasnt really been show since Alex ross's MARVELS. The heros and villains would make brief cameos due to the fact that there stories and fights etc... would be what the bugle would write about... plus a scene that would be awsome would be........

having glory and betty talking... in front of jameson's office, and you hear jameson yelling at someone... glory would say to betty "peter late with the photos again?" and betty would roll her eyes... "poor pete, jameson never gives him a break" etc.. with never actually even having to show peter parker on the show

This sounds great. Exactly what I was thinking. The Gibborim I think can be handled just fine. Good old make up and camera tricks.

How do we keep people tuned in if they can just wiki the first two years worth of storyline? Not much suspense if EVERYone knows that Alex is going to die... do we change up the red herrings to make it seem like the ending has changed only to not change it? Or do we?

Honestly, I can't imagine Alex and Gert's deaths going any other way. Everything was set up so well, and the team dynamic couldn't be any more... dynamic.

yeah thats kinda why I thought it should be a movie so that you could have a definite ending and they wouldn't have to alter so much. although, I'm a bigger fan of television. (Entertainment Value Lasts Longer than a movie)

Oh no no. Please don't do that. We want the arc to last most of if not the entire season. That way there are cliff hangers and, instead of 22 one hour shows, we get one 22 hour show. That is much better for character development. Think of the way the Sopranos was made compared to say CSI.

I'm not confused. But one arc in one episode would suck. A piece of the arc in each episode would be great. You get the cliff hanger. You want to know what happens next week. That's why story arcs aren't told in one issue. Why should they be told in one episode?

I see the logic at why Runaways could pull it off, and why DD/Cap couldn't... but a WHOLE arc? Maybe a two parter or something...

This whole thing makes me hungry for a Captain America show: 24 meets Bionic Woman meets Heroes meets Band of Brothers and all that good stuff. It would be off of the chain. You wouldn't even be able to find the chain.

It's only 6 issues and it takes me less than hour to read it all so I figure that translates perfectly fine. Plus if you read 6 issues together it's really one big story as opposed to little stories making up an arc. The issues are not self contained like The Runaways. I mean there are issues of Daredevil and Captain America I'd read where there's nothing but character and story development. No overall story to describe that single issue. It's just another piece of the big arc. I don't think people would tune in for episodes where Nick Fury and Captain America sit at a table and talk about the situation for an hour.
