Marvel Solicitations For September 2008

Hulk vs red GSC rematch meaning the Hulk looses the first battle and somehow Thor probably does too (how is a bit beyond me but I guess he will have immediate memory loss forgetting how he is the King of Asgard and has inherited all of Odins' power.

Yeah, I've gone from anticipating Hulk #5 to dreading it. :(

Anyway, thoughts:

- I figured it'd only be a matter of time before Iron Man turned up in Eternals. What's with the movie armor, though? We know he's redesigning his armor in Secret Invasion--is something closer to the movie armor the end result? Given how awesome he looks in the movie, I wouldn't mind that. Can't wait to see Gilgamesh again, too.

- Looking forward to Blade in Captain Britain and MI-13. I hope he gets his coat (or at least a shirt) back at some point, but maybe that look is just Hitch's tunnel-vision Ultimates thing at work again (I'd be shocked if he designed any costume without padding somewhere).

- Please don't let Secret Invasion become Civil War 2 with this schism between the heroes' views on the Skrull invasion...

- X-Men: Magneto Testament sounds interesting. Pak and Giandomenico are a great set of creators, too.

- Incredible Herc sounds awesome. I'm glad Van Lente is revisiting the romance Herc and Namora started in WWH. It should be fun to see Herc finally find a woman who can match both his strength and his temper. :D

- What's the deal with Fury's "secret warriors"? Is that another name for his new Howling Commandos or a whole new team he somehow found time to recruit and train between Secret War and Secret Invasion? That cover reminded me that I miss the old blue suit on Fury. Maybe he can go back to it and leave the SHIELD jumpsuit to the nameless SHIELD nobodies.

- Awesome, Bill's already back by SI: Thor #2! And he's working with Balder, who's another sadly underappreciated Thor supporter! AAH, I can't wait! The Skrulls' "secret weapon" had better be damn impressive if it's meant to stand up to Marvel's most powerful pantheon, too.

- Does anyone else think the X-Men's new costumes look worse every time they see 'em? Bleh.

- Yay, another Orson Randall one-shot!

- Nova looks a little, um... awkward... on that cover. Cool that Richie's back home trying to protect his family amidst the Secret Invasion. I wonder if anyone'll remember that his brother is missing a finger or two from the first New Warriors series.

- Hmm. Runaways sounds... pretty interesting. But, oh, that Ramos art... :(

- The Skaar one-shot sounds cool. Highly reminiscent of an issue of Planet Hulk where the Warbound tell tales of Earth, too.

It's not the movie armor. The helmet is similar and the chest piece is circular (which I prefer) instead of triangular, but that's about it. Maybe Acuna just wanted to do something different, or maybe Marvel is beginning to introduce the movie armor into the comics. I wouldn't mind, as the movie armor is literally just an Adi Granov drawing brought to life.

The whole upper body looks more like a mix of the movie armor and the pre-Extremis Granov armor. The only thing that still looks like the current Extremis armor to me, in fact, is the legs. Maybe Acuna just decided to mix and match for kicks. That'd be a shame; I'd love to get the circular uni-beam back, at least.

Well, it could very well be the new armor. Maybe Tony comes out of SI sporting this one, and the editorial mandate for all artists to change the look of the armor jumped the gun a bit. Wouldn't be the first time.

Love this cover

More thoughts:

- SPIDER-MAN LOVES MARY JANE simply refuses to die. Guess it does well via digest.

- I would give BIG HERO 6 a try, honest, but it is by Claremont and the golden rule is that he's generally been way, way, WAY past his prime for years now.

- Blade's "hair" looks odd in that CAPTAIN BRITAIN & MI-13 cover. And I could live if he took off his trench, since Hitch and Kirk are not the same artists. Still, how often have covers been 100% accurate? I'm sure the coat will be there. I just hope Cornell's reason as to why Spitfire is a vampire, and for how long, doesn't suck.

- I'd be jazzed for another random Orson Randall one-shot, but it is by the new writer for the ongoing. I am partisan on giving him a chance.

- Thor is dating Storm in MARVEL ADVENTURES: AVENGERS? That...almost makes more sense than she and T'Challa (and doesn't have that "because they are black" vibe to it).

- I think this solict for SECRET INVASION #6 may show the point where Bendis' event goes from "surprisingly not too bad" to "pretentiously horrible". I mean, really, why is there some "heroes infighting" middle-ground? It is ALIENS TAKING OVER THE EARTH! Aliens who have proven vicious, war-wongering and savage in the past. After three years of heroes punching each other with more heart and vigor than they have ever done towards villains, I saw SI as maybe a unifier. But I should have known better. I have been waiting for SI to "go Bendis", and this may be it. Plus, we'll get to see Bendis butcher Thor and Bucky's characterizations. Yeah, I have zero faith anymore.

- Naturally, NA and MA provide SI answers no one asked for. But we're gonna get anyway.

- AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE #17 welcome back Dan Slott to the co-writing chair and naturally offers a future issue full of chills, spills, and old time characters. There is only one caveat; promising the take-down of the Skrull Queen. I mean, seriously, no, that isn't happening. It is like anyone seriously expecting much of the Hulk vs. Ghost Rider fight in the WWH GHOST RIDER tie in, or expected the X-Men to beat the Hulk in WWH: X-MEN. There is no way in heaven or hell the prime villain will lose in any title that isn't written by Bendis. None. Zero. You have as much chance of Dan DiDio embracing a character's status quo from after 1990 than you have of this. That, naturally, takes a lot of drama out of the tie-in. Still, it's Slott & Gage on the best Avengers title on the racks; I expect to be pleased, as always.

- I bet more will actually happen in 3 issues of SI: THOR than in 6 issues of JMS' normal THOR. :p

- It appears that the X-Men decided to tweak their costumes to make them look worse, which is on target with their usual patterns. Except, of course, Wolverine.

- I am wondering why GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY has a tie-in to SI when they are supposed to be in deep space. I mean, I understand wanting to sustain sales, and NOVA is heading to Earth to protect his family (a reasonable reason), but GOTG really makes little sense. Why would the Skrulls bother to muck with a team that has nothing to do with Earth at the moment? Oh, well. It will probably be decent, and arguably space is where one should run into a Skrull.

- That NOVA cover makes it look like Richard hasn't been getting enough fiber. However, now that I know the general plotline of the SI tie-in, I think it will work out for Nova. I feared that it would feel pointless because there is no way Marvel would allow a major shift in their event to happen in a small book like NOVA, outside of Bendis' Galactus-like notice (most other writers are mere specks, below his notice, and so thus his herald Brevroot is summoned to battle them). But this sets up a nice little mission for Nova. He is there to save his brother and keep at least one area of Earth tech, PROJECT PEGASUS, out of Skrull claws. It is a story that really won't matter much to the grand scheme, but it will be dramatic enough on it's own terms that it will make it seem like Nova has accomplished something behind the scenes. Honestly, the best way to handle things.

- Got to love how MOON KNIGHT's tie-in's are about a year late.

- Still am giving HELLCAT a try.

- "The end of the New Warriors begins here" says the solict, and I cynically thought, "Yes, because sales are crap." But, I'm still enjoying the title and will finish it out.

- Yeah, SO don't care about RUNAWAYS anymore.

- AXM seems to almost be a parody; don't the X-Men get reshuffled with new costumes and a "bold new direction" every couple of years? Spider-Man needed a demon-lord to enter the perennial spin-cycle continuity limbo trap that the X-Men seem to have become masters of.

- Two random WOLVERINE one-shots, because he has to compete with Iron Man as Marvel's most overused character.

- I am amazed X-MEN: FIRST CLASS made it 16 issues (25 if you count the last 8 issue mini and the "special") before it guest starred Spider-Man. I mean, even Thor showed up first.

Dread, do you know what the definition of insanity is?

Though I like Thor, it is moving way to slow. It doesn't surprise me that its dropping in sales.

- Nova looks a little, um... awkward... on that cover. Cool that Richie's back home trying to protect his family amidst the Secret Invasion. I wonder if anyone'll remember that his brother is missing a finger or two from the first New Warriors series.

It kinda looks to me like he's trying to use one of those asian squatty toilets.

Shame the New Warriors are going out.

Oh, well it was an honest effort and will probably see 18-20 issues. Grievs did a good job and seems to get better and better each issue.

Now , how about a mini next with a more traditional roster or a Night Thrasher mini ?

A traditional roster would be pretty tough, what with Speedball on the Thunderbolts and Nova out in space.

Show of hands; who here thinks Blader5489 is an assjockey?

/raise

And I'm sorry, but I gave up blind loyalty to Marvel when I gave up my immaturity.

Show of hands; who here thinks Blader5489 is an assjockey?

Just so we're clear: it's perfectly okay for Doc Destruction to reply to a post of mine that had nothing to do with him and insult me over it, but when I call him on it, I'm the "assjockey"?

Well, you did blast Dread AGAIN. Which is getting to be as lame as you think Dread's posts are. Dread hates Bendis. He should. Bendis sucks. Big deal.

You had it coming.

I didn't "blast" Dread, I was going to ask him why he keeps subjecting himself to stuff he obviously hates. Hence the insanity of it.

Because you HAVE to read SI in order to keep up with the MU. That's the inherent problem with big events. If they SUCK, you still have to keep up with them.

And some of us hate Wiki surfing and trade waiting.

I'm tired of that argument, especially because it's flawed. You don't have to read anything. People post full spoilers of issues all the time; in-depth summaries are posted on wikipedia; and hell, DCP scans entire issues for downloading. There are plenty of ways to know what's going on without having to buy the comic.

But also, the only books that SI will affect are the Avengers titles. Cap, Iron Man, Thor, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Daredevil, X-Men, etc. have little, if anything, to do with SI. You don't need to know about the Skrulls in order to keep up with most of Marvel's books.

I kind of agree. You don't necessarily need to read SI. But, to use Civil War as an example: Civil War didn't directly tie into a ton of individual titles either, but it did leave an indelible change in the fundamental status quo of the Marvel universe that trickled down to pretty much all of Marvel's mainstream comics. You literally can't read a number of major comics without knowing at least the basics of Civil War because the Initiative, Iron Man as Director of SHIELD, the animosity between various superheroes, etc. all come directly from CW. These are fundamental shifts in the make-up of the Marvel universe. Something similar may happen with Secret Invasion that would leave people who skipped the mini lost afterward. There are still ways to catch up, but it could still be viewed as unreasonable to have to play catch-up on comics you've been reading consistently because of something that happened elsewhere in some big-shot's summer event.
