Warning. Long post ahead.
I understand people wanting their favorites in, but my issue is with people who bash on characters just simply because they don't know them or weren't in MVC2. Which I find very close minded. Rocket Raccoon wasn't on my most wanted list, but I'm getting sick of people blaming him for everything and targeting him to be the scapegoat as to why characters XYZ didn't make the cut. I've seen people even blame him for MM not being in. It pissed me off enough when people did this to She-Hulk(whom I actually wanted), now I'm just bitter at it in general. Speaking of She-Hulk I remember Joe ranting in his first review about how no one wanted her and MODOK. I recall a good number of people on Gamefaqs and Capcom Unity requesting her.
I bet most of characters people are hating on would have had more fans if they were in MVC2. The fact that there are so many people happy over Sentinel and Strider is proof of this. And the fact that there are still people begging for CapCom and Jin proves it even further. Some people just can't wrap their mind around a character who wasn't in MVC2 or in some cartoon in the 90s.
MVC2 and even the first one had it's share of lesser known characters. MVC1 had Strider, CapCom, and Jin. When it comes to the reused sprites in MVC2 it was Shuma, Blackheart, Thanos, Spiral, and Silver Samurai. When it comes to characters that were actually new in MVC2 it was Marrow, Hayato, SonSon, Amingo, and Ruby Heart. The last three being original characters. And now in MVC3 we have Dormammu, MODOK, Taskmaster, Firebrand, Nova, and Rocket Raccoon. MVC was never just simply an "All-star comic book heroes/Capcom characters I know" game.
Granted I wouldn't mind characters like Gambit or Venom, but I can understand Marvel not wanting them. I like that they're trying to keep the roster fresh with more new faces instead of just rehashing the same ones over and over. This isn't MVC2.5. What throws me off so much is how many people clamor for characters and then not only get mad when someone they don't know gets in because they don't consider them popular enough, they then go into great detail about how X Marvel series entry made them LOVE a certain character so much and now they miss them and I'm thinking "dude... If they had followed your philosophy and only included "popular" characters from past entries, you would have never grown to love Strider, CapCom, and Jin because they never would have been in the game."
People also seem to be forgetting that almost nobody even knew what Tatsunoko was and yet people for it to come to the US, despite that they didn't even know over 50% of the cast. Heck, it even had unfamiliar Capcom characters, like Saki, and I've seen people request her for U/MvC3. You know what that did? It made people gain interest in these characters they never heard of, and want to learn more, see the shows that they were from. In a way, Marvel's doing the same thing.
If this roster is really the result of Marvel meddling, then honestly, I hope they continue doing it. If Capcom would only listen to the vocal majority, we'd barely ever get any new characters, especially those that really deserve it.
