Ugh, Rachel was created before Cable. She predates him by several yearsCable has the time travel extremeness going against him. Then they created Rachel, Bishop, and X-Men and hell even Hope based on his ''success".
Gambit screams of trying to create another Wolverine. Bad boy who sometimes is loyal to the X-Men and others is a problem/henderance to them.
Gambit's an awesome character. Id suggest reading him in X-23 as thats the best take on the character in well over a decade. I hated 90s Gambit but the guy rocks now. He and Laura together are one of the best duos in Marvel
One could argue Psylocke. Technically she was created before the 90s, but the Asian version is essentially like a completely different character than her original British interpretation. The writers only focus exclusively on the badass ninja she became in the 90s even when the oppurtunity presented itself to go back to her roots. And now, she's the top female in the X-world, only second to arguably Emma.None of these characters offer anything that someone already doesn't. Every character who was created in the last 89-late 90's period has either had to have a radical rehaul to continue to be used (how many times has Jubilee been changed since her inception as a character) or has been killed off, fell into the background (What has Gambit done lately except be the third wheel in Mike Carey's Rogue/Magneto fetish?) or had to stop being used (Adam X anyone) because they were just either extremely one note or just stopped being relevant.
The characters of that period and them being focused on was one of the main reasons 90's comic book story telling sucked so bad and why the industry was failing. The stories were not good because they were focusing on terrible characters.
And as far as characters having radical rehauls.....it happens to many characters that have been around for a long time. Look at Beast, Angel, Hank Pym, Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, etc... Does that make them awful characters by definition?
