SPIDER-MAN foils a bank robbery by
VULTURE. The villain is arrested with
CAPT. GEORGE STACY on scene.
- Spider-Man has a much better relationship with the NYPD after years of friendly neighborhood web-slinging, much to the chagrin of J. JONAH JAMESON.
- Spider-Man is able to freely walk around the police precinct. We are treated to a fun scene with a Bruce Campbell cameo as QUENTIN BECK, aka ‘MYSTERIO.’
PETER PARKER is working as a lab technician in
CURT CONNORS' lab.
GWEN STACY is also a lab tech too. We are reintroduced to Connors as a devoted husband and father. He is also fiercely dedicated to his research on cellular regeneration.
MARY JANE WATSON is a breakout movie star with a recent string of romantic comedies, causing her to be back-and-forth to the West Coast. She and Peter are together but taking things “slow” since getting back together at the end of
Spider-Man 3.
Peter still takes photos for the Daily Bugle. The Bugle is struggling to stay relevant in a city that loves Spider-Man and in a world moving away from paper—JJJ has even joined the social media revolution with coaxing from
TED HOFFMAN.
Spider-Man first crosses paths with
BLACK CAT when she breaks into Curt Connor’s lab to steal valuable tech. The confrontation causes Connors to shut down the lab and he loses his funding. Frustrated and without options, he later injects himself with an experimental serum and becomes the monstrous
LIZARD.
Black Cat and Spider-Man have a flirtatious relationship throughout the film. Peter later meets Felicia Hardy at a premiere party for MJ’s movie—the two of them outcasts amongst the rich & famous. In actuality, she’s casing the joint.
MJ stays at Peter’s apartment when she’s in town—he’s no longer at
MR. DITKOVITCH’s building, but just across the street. We are treated to a small appearance by him and his daughter.
Lizard attacks Peter (not Spider-Man) and MJ in Central Park. He is losing his intelligence but is searching for Peter who he thinks can help. Lizard eventually retreats into the sewers after he is unable to get through to Peter (who only discovers his identity after the fight when Peter discovers Lizard's tattered lab coat & nametag).
During the confrontation against Lizard, MJ sustains a minor injury and Peter brings her to the hospital where she finds out she’s pregnant.
Peter & Gwen manage recreate Connors’ research to synthesize a cure while Spider-Man hunts for Lizard in the sewers in a horror-themed sequence. Lizard is increasingly losing his humanity. Their second fight draws the attention of the NYPD who try to takedown Lizard but Spider-Man intervenes to protect his former mentor & friend.
Spider-Man is again spurned by the people of New York and labelled a criminal for defending Lizard against the police. Capt. Stacy is pressured to call for his arrest in a press conference which leads the courts to take a closer look at some of the criminals he's recently apprehended including Vulture.
Eventually Spider-Man and Black Cat meet on a rooftop, and he gives her his own version of the “with great power, comes great responsibility” speech. She reveals she has been stealing so she can pay off her father’s debts to the mob. Her father is Adrian Toomes, aka the Vulture, who Spider-Man defeated in the film’s opening action sequence.
The movie is centrally focused on FAMILY--with the Connors family; Aunt May and Peter & MJ; and Felicia and her father Adrian Toomes.
Toomes is eventually released from prison on technicality (after all, he's just an old man w/o his Vulture wings). He goes back to his mob contact in a seedy bar to try and get money to get back his wings. Felicia tails him & tries to convince him to stop but he instead asks for her help in stealing more. She realizes he's a career criminal and cares more about money than her.
Aunt May dies in this film. Peter is able to say good-bye and she admits that she always knew he was Spider-Man. Unlike with his
UNCLE BEN, Peter has closure and May passes away peacefully in a hospital bed with Peter and Mary Jane at her side.
In the finale, Spider-Man has to rescue
BILLY CONNORS after he’s kidnapped by the Lizard and brought to CONEY ISLAND, the Connors’ favorite memory as
MARTHA CONNORS reveals to Spider-Man. There is some part of Curt Connors in the Lizard still.
Black Cat is on-scene for the finale too to help save Billy, feeling guilty about her responsibility and not wanting to tear apart a family in the way that hers is now due to her father’s actions. Together, her and Spider-Man are able to save the day and cure Lizard.
Peter helps Connors and his family relocate to Florida to avoid investigation and to protect his secret.
The film ends with a stinger of Spider-Man confronting the mysterious gangster
HAMMERHEAD, the man who Toomes owed money to, before another iconic swinging sequence to close the film.
