Matt Reeves Directing The Batman

While it's all but finalised, from what we're hearing, that Reeves will be directing The Batman, I was surprised to read who they've apparently got lined up if Reeve's doesn't end up signing up.:

"Other directors remain in the wings, including Ridley Scott and Don't Breathe helmer Fede Alvarez."

Considering the people they're looking at, it sounds like they are definitely looking for someone with strong horror roots.

The horror bit didn't occur to me... you may be onto something here. At least, I hope you are.

That somehow glossed over me as well. I just got giddy.

Especially if we're finally delving into the supernatural. :DV:

It could be about knowing how to build tension and suspense, not necessarily horror.

Yeah Cloverfield, Let Me In, Alien, Evil Dead, Don't Breathe.

That is a good sign.

I liked the ape flick but hated Cloverfield and thought the " "Let me in "remake fell way short of the original.

I always wandered how David Lynch's Batman would look...

Yeah like Ridley Scott would ever do a Batman movie. Alvarez I could definitely see getting the nod, but I doubt Scott would ever do it.

It would honestly be hilarious if Ridley Scott signed onto this after the comments he made about superhero films in general. I have to think he's on WB's wishlist, and not necessarily someone they've had talks with.

Besides, the guy is crazy busy with his 54 Alien prequels, and I believe he just signed on to direct a western on top of all of that. Can't imagine where he'd find the time even if he wanted to do it.

Affleck: "I'll direct The Batman"
Scott: "CBM are trash, I'll never do them!"

I bet he's on every studio's wishlist for every movie. He's one of the most liked directors in town. That doesn't mean he's a serious candidate though or he'd ever do it.

Crap, when people here would brainstorm their personal fan choices of directors to do these type of films, the go-to choices are always either Ridley Scott or James Cameron.

But yeah you are right, he's already got a full plate anyway.

Ridley to me anyway, always comes off like a jerk who thinks he's mastered every single aspect of filmmaking. He's a bragger. And he's put out more terrible or average films than good ones over the last 15 years. And even in his heyday he was always a hit or miss director. Of course, a few of his films are on my all-time fav list. But yeah, he's better off making films he's passionate about like the new Alien, rather than trying to experiment for the hell of it.

Fede Alvarez might make b-level style horror films, but he directs the hell out of them. He would be sooo good for a smaller, all out HORROR batman movie. I just don't think that fits with the current plan or universe. He's still young. Let him come back years from now if they want to do a prequel to the Batfleck films, or for a reboot with a younger Batman. My mouth would water just thinking of a Fede Bat trailer.

I mean, he's earned the right to. Guy's nearly 80 and he's working more than people in their 30s. And I don't even think he really took much of a career break since he started. He'll have his prickish moments from time to time, but he's got the resume to back up his talk.

I was watching a director's roundtable from last year and it was funny how everyone in the room was admiring Scott's wisdoms and stories. To this day the industry acknowledges his incredible repertoire.

If he trashed BvS so much, then many should be happy he took on the challenge of coming into this genre anyway. His critiques of story and spectacle will likely be fully realized in whatever incarnation he creates. For all the backlash BvS has received on these fronts, you'd think Ridley would be celebrated more.

I DO think most superhero movies to date have been cheesy but I don't put much stock in what Ridley Scott says. The Alien movies are just a cash grab to me. It's pretty stale stuff now for me.

Ridley earned his right to act that way. I'll be forever grateful for Blade Runner. Regardless of how many weak films he makes.

I'm skeptical Ridley Scott would take it at this point in his career, unless the film was truly "Ridley Scott's Batman".

I.e. he would have full creative control to tell the story and make the film he wants to make, not a WB/DCEU connected easter egg filled Batman film.

Just...c'mon guys. Even Ridley on his worst days can't help but contain godly cinematography. It's a long shot, but dammit I'm salivating at the thought of him tackling it.

Easy there. I'm not complaining about the idea of Scott as the director. I'm saying that if Ridley was gonna do it , it would be his way and not the way WB probably would want him to do it .

He'd want to do his own thing with it which WB execs may not be willing to do which has been an ongoing issue with potential directors of these films.

Bladerunner was used as the model for B89 , BB, and TDK , so Scott being a fit for a Batman isn't a stretch as far as I'm concerned . But I also think if he didn't it, it would be his vision and story and not a film that's bound to the Sndyerverse or WB mandates .

It can be argued now, more than ever (since maybe the Schumacher days), WB are willing to step back and just let a trusted director take the reins. At least for Batman.

They know he's the bread and butter. If they have to sacrifice a cinematic universe to get back to the prestige of yesteryear, I don't think it's completely off the table given the circumstances.

I'm not convinced they're at that point...yet. However, if WW and JL don't go the way they would prefer ,and Affleck does walk, I could see their primary mission to "save" the Batman franchise and put aside all the shared universe stuff.

In that instance, I could see them giving Scott or even Reeves , leeway to do things their way and to allow a Nolan-like level of control and independence to make the best film possible.

Reeves for Batman is so great that I almost don't wanna believe it could actually be a possibility.
