Despite all the turmoil around the upcoming solo films (Batman and Flash) I'm still looking forward to Justice League and Wonder Woman simply because they're the first time those properties have gotten films.

I want to do the same, but I can't. So much of this reminds me of the Tom Rothman era of Fox.

I do have a question though: what kind of Batman movie is this? Given the news reports here and here, I'd assume Affleck/Johns turned in a script that needed an extra punch, which was delivered by Terrio. But in the end, what Batman movie is this? I ask because, WB is very reactionary post-BvS, and want to do whatever it takes to please everybody, and Batman lives in a superhero universe unlike Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. A superhero Batman? Last time that happened was Batman Forever. Is that what WB wants? Or am I going nuts?
If all they wanted was that, there wouldn't necessarily be this much hoopla.

I believe a poster earlier suggested the shortlist of directors tended toward the horror genre. My assumption given the pedigree of Affleck and Terrio is that they're aiming for a slimmed down, more digestible BvS, which is somewhat different from Nolan's take. Unfortunately, that's also much harder to get right.

WB has to hit rock bottom to rise from the ashes and shoot for the stars.

All studios do to some extent.

Batman will return. Batman is forever. :ninja:

This isn't 20 years ago though. Batman in 97 never had to contend with the avalanche of characters he does now.

No, he's Batman he will be fine. I don't care what character is hot right now they all pale in comparison to the bat god. Batman rules all things media he as a character has starred in some of the best recieved video games, cartoons, and movies of all time.

Brexit and Trump being president also weren't suppose to happen.

I honestly think a Batman movie has the most potential to allow for relative creative freedom. Batman as a character has always been more isolated from the rest of the DC Universe in scope, so if they really wanted to, they could get a great director and say here's your Batman universe, do what you want with it, and let them do their thing. I would almost prefer that to a Batman movie that has to constantly reference the greater universe at large. The best Batman stories, in my opinion, are ones that are strictly Batman stories.

Yeah, I'd prefer the Bat movie to step away from the DCEU, keep it grounded, forget about the mythology, magic, aliens, etc. We get enough of that in the rest of the films. Batman should stick to it's roots, what makes it stand out in the DC world, the crime drama, gangster, film noir, hard boiled detective, dark, action film. I think if they do that and just allow a director to play around in the Gotham universe and not have to worry about the franchise, they could attract a lot of great directors.

I think part of Affleck's decision is seeing the way everyone dogged on Snyder and BvS way harder than they deserved (IMO of course), and feels like there's just no winning in this atmosphere of fan expectations, possible Marvel bias, and the studio panicking and interfering with everything. It's a damn shame, I really feel like Snyder's films were a good start, opening up so much possibility for a great DCEU, and if they'd just allow the creators some room to breathe, there's so much potential. Here's hoping Justice League manages to turn around a lot of the negativity, but it feels like so many people are already expecting to hate it.

he will get the job right?

Reeves doesn't excite me; I haven't really liked anything he's done. Wait and see I guess.

Yeah, doesn't really excite me either, although I thought the Apes film was pretty good, but I don't see anything on his resume that makes me think Batman, like Affleck had the well received crime dramas and hard boiled detective story. I would get excited for Ridley Scott, though I don't see it happening. American Gangster, Gladiator, Blade Runner, Alien all make me feel like he has the right sensibilities for Batman. But, I'll definitely be open to Reeves if that's the way the dice fall.

I'd be perfectly happy with Snyder, I think he could do great things if he just had the darker World of Batman to focus on, without worrying about super beings and aliens. But I would not be looking forward to all the fan backlash and everybody not willing to give it a chance, like people being like "Just let him have it so he can completely ruin the universe and we'll get a reboot."

Just think of how many machine guns the Batmobile will have on it!

Machine guns! Machine guns everywhere!

THR FEBRUARY 17, 2017:
'Batman' Negotiations Break Down With Director Matt Reeves (Exclusive)
The studio is intent on making the movie no matter what, as the Batman franchise has proven to be bigger than one person.
Mia Galuppo & Borys Kit said:
A week after entering negotiations to direct The Batman, Matt Reeves has exited the talks, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

A studio source confirms that negotiations have broken down. The possibility, however, exists that talks could resume when heads cool. The studio is intent on making the movie no matter what, as the Batman franchise has proven to be bigger than one person.

Reeves is currently deep in postproduction on War for the Planet of the Apes, which is shaping up to be the biggest entry in the Fox franchise.

Ben Affleck was set to helm the superhero feature, but ultimately decided not to pull double duty as both director and Dark Knight. Affleck co-wrote the script with DC Films co-head Geoff Johns.

Prior to Reeves' receiving the offer, Ridley Scott and Don't Breathe helmer Fede Alvarez were among the names being floated for the director's chair.

The Batman is the latest DC/Warner Bros. project to undergo a director shuffle. The Flash stand-alone has gone through multiple directors, including Seth Grahame-Smith and Rick Famuyiwa.

They will either move on to someone knew or negotiations will start up again. Seen this in Hollywood many times.

Iñarritu would be a good choice, now that I think about it.

Just let Snyder complete the job of burning the f**king thing to ground already. Let him scorch the DC earth and take everyone down with him. Batman's had a good enough run of 30 years on film. :csad:

At the very least he's not one to burn bridges.

Doesn't matter who directs it or how good (or bad) it is. It will be rated "rotten" and the vocal minority/majority will hate it anyway.

There isn't enough room for two shared universes.

Snyder is busy. And why in the hell would anyone want him to direct a CGI fest of a Batman movie.

Iñarritu would be a good choice, now that I think about it.
He would rather stab himself repeatedly than make a superhero movie.

Fox seems to be doing ok with their sorta connected universe

I really don't think there is a straight up "Marvel roolz DC droolz" bias, people just don't like the way the characters are being handled.

But yes, I will acknowledge that those petty people do exist. Really sad people!
