Marvel Films MCU Phase IV!

Feige has said they are not going to be doing "phases" or anything in the future. At least, not in the manner we're accustomed to now.
We can still group the films into future phases ourselves. :cwink:

I've always thought the "phase" concept seemed a little odd considering the films within those phases and that lack of clear distinction from one phase to the next.

Looking back, it seems like the first ten years formed one cohesive "Infinity Saga" as opposed to three distinct "phases". And now the question is will they have a similar over-arching story (which could be possible using Galactus or Doom or even Mutants to tie everything loosely together), or are they deciding to go with a strategy of more stand-alone films over the next ten years?

Phase One worked, the solo films that lead to Avengers, after that it got a little weird.
I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case. If you look at which films are on the slate over the next few years, it looks like a lot of solo adventures and stand alones.

Personally my definition of crazy would be having the chance to do a marvel flick and doing a dc flick instead lol

I mean, it's not like the largely bad nature of the movies is the fault of the characters. Pretty much anyone can have good movies made about them with the right creative team at the helm, so I don't see why Gunn would genuinely not want to do it if he had an interest.

Are the Eternals better than the inhumans in the comics?

I feel like I've wasted my time reading hundreds of Inhumans comics only for the Inhumans to lead to a tv demotion.

I think what makes Marvel so successful is the "phased" approach. If they just release individual stand-alone films going forward, I think they'll lose some of the interest of the wider audience who see The Avengers-type films as a culmination of what came before it. I think they're holding a ton of stuff close to the chest and once Endgame is released they'll announce their slate for the next 2-3 years.

Personally I find the Eternals boring in the comics and the Inhumans far more interesting as characters. They just executed the Inhumans badly both in AoS and then especially in their own show where they were a joke. They should've really had their big screen debut in a Fantastic Four movie.

Whether or not something works in the comics is kind of immaterial to the movies at this point.

so what happens with doc strange 2? its weird the script aint ready at this point. the first movie came in what? 2017?
surprised there arent casting news by now

I've said this in another thread but I'd love it if the next decade of MCU films become collectively known as "The Mutant Saga." As they did with the Infinity stones, they can start planting the seeds for mutants during the early stages of this new phase. Their origins could be told in The Eternals. Have Storm in Black Panther 2 and Rogue in Captain Marvel 2 or 3. Then this phase could culminate with the first X-Men film. Everything leads up to...

Avengers vs. X-Men: Round One - May 2030
Avengers vs. X-Men: Round Two - May 2031

Use elements from both The Dark Phoenix Saga and Avengers vs. X-Men while also giving it a unique MCU spin. This gives us something quite different from Thanos. It's a galactic scale threat only much more personal for our heroes and us as audience members since we've grown to care for Jean over these past ten years. And the Avengers battling the X-Men would be like Civil War times a zillion. :D

If that doesn't put butts in seats I don't know what would.

So MCU films typically have a 1 year turn around this would line up with a October/November 2020 release.
Yep. Black Widow in May of 2020 and Eternals in November. Those will be our two MCU movies next year

I think the script is about ready. I'm not sure when they'll start filming, but I'm guessing it'll be one of the 2021 releases.

Phase 3 also started with 2 films in 2016. Civil War and Doctor Strange. I imagine having one less film to deal with probably takes some of the pressure off. And allows pre-production time to catch up on the next film likely Shang-Chi.

Dr Strange 2 is definitely taking longer as Marvel decides to do Black Widow, Eternals and Shang Chi along with it and there will only be two movies next year, and thats for the new potential franchises.

See this is why, they need to finish the trilogies of the other characters first before launching the X-Men and the Fantastic Four so soon.

5 years between sequels may start to become the norm as the slate becomes so packed. Feige may decide that a couple of extra years between films that didnt do so well I.E Doctor Strange and Ant-Man and The Wasp might be a good thing. Gives them time to get a make over. It makes you wonder when we might see ant-man 3 if it happens.

5 years gap needs to be avoided. Like I said before 2 Spidey films are released between Ds1 and Ds2?! Ds2 should be coming out before Ffh imo. And I don't want the sequels to feel like they should have been out 1 or 2 years earlier.

I asked this, because I got curious about them.

Too bad, if their story in the comics is boring and the characters are not as interesting as the Inhumans, then i guess I'll just wait for the movie version.

I think Ant-Man 3 will be one of the 2022 films

That's what I will be doing. I wouldn't bother checking out any of the Eternals stories in the comics myself. I don't think it's going to add that much to the experience. The movie version might be quite different anyway.

but if the first movie came in 2016, they have had 3 years to start pre-production, and 2020 only has two movies leavin one empty spot for Strange.

I think Feige just didnt want to rush the sequel and was fine with Strange appearing in the Avengers movies of 2018 and 2019.

Thats a fair point if you look at it that way. If Doctor Strange 2 is 2021 it will technically only be 2 years after his last major appearance which will be in End Game. Thats not to say he cant pop up in another movie either there were rumours of him showing up in Far From Home.

There are only two films set for 2020 and Doctor Strange 2 isn't one of them

DS1 came out Oct/Nov 2016.
Derrickson officially signed on to direct the sequel this past December. Looks like they'll start filming late this year or early next year, which would put it in either the Feb or May 2021 release dates.

Coogler also apparently signed on for BP2 last October, but he's been trying to get a low budget film going, though I can't seem to find any onfo saying that's actually going ahead... so BP2 could be 2021. With Shang-Chi just getting a director that would indicate it's the 3rd 2021 film.

How on earth did DS and AM&tW not do well? They were both well reviewed and made $677m & $622m WW on budgets of about $165m each. DS didn't even have any real MCU tie-ins other than the Thor post-credit scene.
