I hear you and I def understand the need to redefine audience expectations. I'm trying to think of ways this could work in a narrative that feels streamlined. There is going to be a lot of ground to cover in that first film, simply because the movie will need to establish and set the X-Men dynamic.. in the MCU.General audiences know the gist of mutants and the X-men so all of that establishment stuff could be done quickly. Establishing that "mutants are the next stage in evolution but the world fears what it doesn't understand" doesn't take very long. X-men on the big screen has been stale with a few exceptions for almost a decade. The X-men need a moment like this:

Whenever X-men comics become stale, they reinvent themselves by making the X-men look and feel a little different and strange. What better way to do that in the MCU than by taking them out of a familiar setting and throwing them into something we've never seen before like the Savage Land?
You could absolutely do this in the sequel once the ground rules have been established but doing it in the first film with no established rules might be more of a challenge. But it's not impossible
