I know there are quite a lot of Ghost fans here but I never could get into them. I don't think I even finished their latest album. Like you described, I had found many of the songs too "pop-rock'ish" to my ears. I liked the instrumental songs more than the lyrical ones...I haven't been listening/playing any music for a solid 3-4 years, as any free time I have, I dedicate to audio books or podcasts, so I've been out of the loop for a bit, but one of my friends showed me a few Ghost tracks, and I've been hooked. Really like them. Very catchy and "radio friendly" short tracks. I'm really diggin them.
I guess Ghost can count as "metal"? Or maybe not? I dunno, whatever., I'm enjoying them![]()
I gave it a quick listen the other day. I have to be in a specific mood when it comes to Sunn O)))...New Sunn O))))) has maybe the most massive guitar sound ever captured. It sounds like it was volcanically loud.
I gotcha. "Mood."I gave it a quick listen the other day. I have to be in a specific mood when it comes to Sunn O)))...
You seem to be into Blackened Sludge/Doom Metal so check out Dead to a Dying World's new album. So every week I try to get a batch of 3-4 (sometimes 5) new albums that i check out during the week, usually spinning them all 4-5 times to get a decent foundation of opinion to stand on. This week I somehow ended up with 2 metal albums that are both album of the year contenders so far.
*Inter Arma - Sulphur English (Sludge/Doom/Post-Metal)
I was familiar with these guys before because I did check out their last album in 2016 and was really impressed with that. On this album however it feels like they took it a step further. Everything from the beautiful artwork to the music itself, the album pulls you in. The guitars have that alarming screeching tone, the drums in some of the songs are kinda tribal and evokes the feeling of early Neurosis, like Enemy of the Sun-era. Vocals are blended with the music in a way and are on the harsh side of the spectrum, I kinda want to say black metal-esque. It isn't really until the 5th track that you get some more clean vocals but overall I think this album is really atmospheric and if you like your metal more on the slow, rough side you might really enjoy this.
*Waste of Space Orchestra - Syntheosis (Doom/Sludge/Black-Metal)
This was a brand new discovery for me, saw this album getting good reviews and figured I'd check it out. I'm honestly pretty mindblown. This album has that quality of sucking you into its world and its so atmospheric and so interesting that I found myself getting surprised a few times through the album. Surprised in a good way, as in they kept doing things I would not expect. It's a very versatile album in my opinion. Opening song is an instrumental that sets the tone, then we dive straight into madness in the second song with vocals that have almost a nightmare quality to them. Fourth song is a stand out for me, "Journey to the Center of Mass" has this slowly building groove which reminds me a lot of modern Swans and how they use repetition very effectively. There's a song in the second half of the album that has almost demonic chanting in it and it feels like you've been transported into a hellish landscape or something. Honestly this really blew me away and might be my metal album of the year so far.
As for other metal releases I've also been digging the new Periphery quite a bit.
