I will say, as someone who's been a bit hesitant on Giacchino, I enjoyed the score quite a bit. I think he def stepped up. I fell asleep listening to it last night and woke up in the middle of the night with the piano sonata playing, haha. That's not a bad thing, as I used to always love putting on Zimmer's Begins score (the softer tracks) to go to sleep to.
While he still makes some composition choices that aren't always my favorite-- I will say that I think this is an incredibly well-produced and mixed score. It sounds very polished, punchy and clear. Very much like the movie itself seems to be. A bit of a golden age throwback with a few modern touches. Could've used a few more of those touches and some more variety though, personally. While I enjoyed everything I heard, I also kept waiting for that epic moment to knock me off my feet which never quite came. I do really enjoy the softer, more emotional stuff IE Catwoman and Bruce's (or heroic Batman, whichever) theme. I think that's where the score is shining most for me so far.
Will obviously need to give it more time to sit, so far I'm not sure if I can say this is quite near the benchmark of Elfman/Zimmer/Walker for me. I definitely can hear some echoes from all of them in here, but something about this also just feels a bit 'standard' to me. It's a very solid Batman score. But it's a 3 hour film and there's probably a ton of music not released + seeing how this all works in context. It could definitely grow on me some more once I get more familiar with it.
