After seeing it yesterday, my only complaint is that I think the trailers showed a bit too much. Paramount has a habit of doing this. The big plot twist of Star Trek Beyond was spoiled by the marketing.

Terminator Genisys? I rest my case.

Where do you rank this film among the six?

Our initial booking was set for Sunday here in the UK, but considering the hype we couldn't wait so we booked for today too!

Can't wait for tonight! This is one of the best action franchises out there and one of the few cases where each consecutive entry is better than the previous (except M:I 2).

I am very excited to hear opinions from people who have already seen it (as it's already out in some countries from today).

This is an issue acrosss the board in Hollywood.

Good interview with McQuarrie and how he approached being the first director to come back for more in this series. He also addresses moustache-gate.

AVC: We’ve kept a close eye on the saga surrounding Henry Cavill’s mustache, which had to be (hilariously) CGI’d out in DC’s Justice League reshoots. Can you shine a light on what the whole situation here was?

CM: Honestly, it’s a really tragic set of circumstances. I’ve skirted any of the fun and the high-fiving that people have been having on the internet because I genuinely felt terrible for those guys. It was an unfortunate set of circumstances. Henry just finished Nomis and had a big beard and the mustache and long hair, and when he came to work he had cut his hair but still had that mustache and he asked, “What do you think?” I thought about it for a second and said, “You know what, let’s go for it.” That was all that was ever said about it.

When the DC thing came up, we were in a very weird and very difficult situation: If Henry shaved his mustache, DC doesn’t have a problem, but we do have a problem. DC said, “Well, our thought is that you can shave the mustache and as it grows back you can augment it with CG.” I thought, “Ehhh, that’s not really gonna work.” I’ve worked with fake mustaches before. You can get away with it for a shot or two, but it doesn’t work over the course of a movie. It certainly doesn’t work over the course of a movie in 35-mm anamorphic with a 75-mm lens in close-up. And, if you don’t believe me, just go look at any movie where someone wears a bad mustache for the whole film. It’s egregious. It’s almost comical.

Our producer Jake Myers said, “All right, let me figure out what that would cost.” And he worked out, based on his considerable experience, the number of shots that Henry Cavill would be in and how much those shots would cost. It was estimated to be at about $3 million. “Well,” he said, “what we’ll do is shut down and you guys just pay us the $3 million. We’ll shut down while Henry Cavill grows his mustache back.” Paramount Pictures heard about this and were like, “What are you doing! You’re not shutting the movie down! We have a release date!”

The sad irony was that, after the fact, Tom broke his ankle and the movie did shut down, but it wasn’t in the time that it could help DC. So, it was just a tragic set of circumstances. We would have loved to have done it, but there was no way we could have done it without compromising the film. I just felt terrible for them, and I still do think it’s a real bummer.

Good on McQuarrie trying to be a different director on this film to keep the tradition alive of each Mission having their own distinct vision. Hiring an entirely new crew helped with that.

I hope not too different. The last one had great kinetic propulsion in almost every aspect. It never left you bored.

Yeah. Although the one weak spot of the last film was that it felt a little anticlimactic. Aside from Ilsa's badass slugfest with the Bone Doctor, it lacked a really great action set piece in the finale. Hopefully that's not the cast here.

I don't think it can be that different since it is a direct continuation of Rogue Nation. I do like the idea from the interview of Hunt adopting an "evil" persona at some point to go undercover.

The interview I posted addressed that actually:

I was really focused on the sequence rather than a stunt, and the one thing I thought I could do that the movies hadn’t done was deliver a bigger third act. A lot of the Mission movies tend to peak—except for Mission one—they all tend to peak in the middle. Tom and I had often talked about wanting to remedy that and wanting to come up with a more climactic third act.

Ah, thank you! Yeah, the only part of the interview that I read was the mustache stuff, lol.

Oh, good lord, it's not.

The third act is probably the best I've seen at the cinema for a long time. Brilliantly staged and performed throughout.

In fact, this is the best Mission Impossible film. Cruise is quite frankly ridiculous at this stage. The things the man does in this film are incredible. Okay, there may be some slight CG augmentation going on in certain scenes, but the man must have balls the size of planets.

The whole team are well served in this movie as well, though. It's Pegg's best outing as Benji, and his contribution to the climax is excellent.

Seriously, if ever there was an advert for 'ditch the CG and do it real' then this is it. McQuarrie is definitely inspired by Nolan in this film, and that's no bad thing. There's one sequence in particular that is almost a homage to a similar one in The Dark Knight. You'll know it when you see it.

It's well paced, despite the running time, and you're never bored. The story is also pretty good, though it's the usual MI convoluted spy shenanigans you've come to expect.

Only weak links were Cavill - who is extremely one note, but still packs a punch, and things get a bit confused as to who is on whose side in the middle act. But once all that business is sorted out, it flies into a climax that is not going to be topped this year by anything.

Terrific film

Awesome, thanks for the insights! Can't wait to see it. I can't see it until Sunday, unfortunately, so I'm going to be going out of my mind until then, lol.

For those who have seen the film, is Sian Brooke still in it, is her role significant and is it a spoiler? Actually, if the last two bits are too much, just answer the first question.

Had to look her up on IMDB. She is not in this film.
