God, I love McQuarrie's melee fights. Him directing a boxing or MMA film would be glorious.

I love how McQuarrie directs action, especially in Jack Reacher. He always puts a unique spin on chase sequences as well. I think he's a very underrated directing talent.

I Loved the car chase from Jack Reacher.

Agreed the silence with Reacher's hand slowly moving toward the shiftier before all hell breaks loose. He puts you in the fight and the chase. I feel claustrophobic during the bathroom fight. In Rogue Nation, when Tom cuts traffic on the motorcycle we see the bike from his view. Its really well done.

The action with McQuarrie just feels real, that's why it works so well.

Recently, McQuarrie said that the sixth film would not open with a big action scene.
Any thoughts on what that alternative sequence would be?

Just a head up guys, there are recut trailers out there of Winter Soldier and Skyfall using the song"Friction" from the Mission Impossible : Fallout trailer.

IMHO not such a bad thing. I don't think the original started with an action scene. I recall it started with a whole setup where Hunt and his team tricked a bad guy into thinking they murdered a woman (Emmanuelle Beart) while Hunt was in disguise. The whole room was like a fake set build around them. I imagine Beart took a drug to simulate death, and then Hunt injects her with something to wake her back up.

The third movie also doesn't start with an action scene. It start with Ethan and his fiancee having a house party.

And the third film is currently my favorite in the franchise.
I love the first one, too as well as that opening scene which calls back to the television show.

Despite what McQuarrie says, I can't see this movie holding out on the action for too long, given how this series has gone in the last two films. The stunts are crazy and are a big reason why the series is so popular.

Technically incorrect. It opens with Hoffman's character interrogating Hunt and counting down until he shoots his wife until he tells him about the Rabbit's Foot.

So not an "action scene" but it's a very intense nail-biting and suspenseful scene before it flashes back.

Yeah, I love when a movie starts with something that happens way later. Is there a name for that?

i watched the 3rd one last night after not having seen it for a few years, and yes its one of the best in the series

also, the position of "Secretary" or "Director" has a ton of turnover

Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Fishburne, Tom Wilkinson, now Alec Baldwin

Before the film is released I hope cable networks show MI III again.
Its been awhile since I saw it last.

You'd think these guys would know by now what engaging Ethan Hunt in melee combat would result in.
