This was pretty cool! I liked the water and the motorcycle chase scene the most! However, the plane scene was kinda a letdown to me. But over-all, it was very good. I don't know if I prefer this to Ghost Protocol but still very good.

God, I wish they could have mounted one of those big honking 70mm IMAX cameras on the side of that jet. THAT scene would have been a complete and utter mind blower.:awesome:

This movie won't have Christmas time to extend its legs but this franchise generally skews more older than the other movies of this summer so $53-55M opening with $150-160M finish is good target. International can then boost it to around $600-700M WW.

I agree. And I wasn't a watcher of the original show, however even I understood how that could be a slap in the face. One of my relatives was and he expressed that he didn't like that move. As a Trek fan it would be like them doing a new movie that says Captain Kirk is a traitor, which would not be cool at all.

Granted it did establish the films as separate from the series-but then again, why did they need to be? It seemed like making Phelps the bad guy was really about establishing Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt as the alpha dog of the movie MI franchise-essentially the franchise now going forward.

On one level I can get it as an oh crap moment, I mean the one guy you wouldn't expect is the mastermind behind it all. I get that. But of course it would've worked better if Peter Graves had done it rather than have a new actor. They could've just as easily created a new character for Voight without having to trash Jim Phelps. And maybe had the old MI crew in cameos as high ranking IMF officials. The old crew gets respect while Hunt still gets to be the big man. Everyone wins.[/QUOTE
Graves turned down the role of Phelps in MI1.
He stated that he wished that Voight had not played Phelps but his successor instead.
He thought that could have been established with with a note from Phelps Wishing the new guy luck.
Graves did not seem pleased with the twist at all.

I think that would've worked with Graves giving the nod to Voight's character. I mean it could be a like a father-son thing, kind of like it was between Voight's Phelps and Hunt. I would've been fine with that. It would've preserved the honor of the original series without really hurting the father-son dynamic between Voight and Cruise.

Literally, just DON'T call him "Jim Phelps" and you're good. It was that simple.

I'll probably write a longer review later but my very quick thought after seeing it was that: I LOVE IT. :awesome:

My favorite scenes were the motorcycle chase scene and the prime minister stuff.

Cruise is awesome as always. Loved how much Pegg was in this. Ugh. My girl crush Rebecca killed it. I love how taking off her shoes before kicking ass or running is her thing. How can you not love that? She's like the live action Catwoman I've been dreaming of. :hrt: I love how she got her own fight scene and it was with the main villain's head muscle man. I did not care for Renner in the last one at all but he was great here and had much, much better chemistry with the cast this time.

I thought my wife had an interesting comment after she saw it. "I really liked it. It was very entertaining, but I found I didn't feel as close to the characters as I did when I saw Ant-Man. I didn't get drawn in to the characters to the same extent." Ant-Man, I think, had characters you could relate to quite a bit more. There were a lot of family issues and things that we deal with everyday. That's the nature of the material itself, but the divide still exists.

I think its just normal for a film like Mission: Impossible. The one that truly resonates to the public in this film franchise is Ethan Hunt. It won't hurt the series if the supporting characters don't come back for a 2nd film, because at the end of the day, they are supporting characters and they easily be replaced with someone new and people won't stop watching the next one because of it. I cannot even remember the name of Jeremy Renner's character is this film and I only familiarized with the name of Simon Pegg's character because of the trailer when Tom kept saying "Benjie open the door" in the trailer/tv spots.

That's what I was saying. It would've been terrible for this film to open in the summer with only $40 million after the two major holiday weekends. The fourth film was propped up by the Christmas holiday for subsequent weekends.

The reviews and positive word of mouth from early screenings obviously helped it. Now it will hopefully do a more respectable opening.

I wonder who could direct M:I 6

I felt the same. It wasn't a letdown per se but i thought it could have been longer. As someone else had said, it would have been cool to have had an IMAX camera on a plane taking off next to him.

Also thought the underwater scene was ok. If you hadn't told me Cruise actually held his breath for 2 minutes I wouldn't have thought it since there was too much jump cuts. Still an impressive set piece overall.

I rewatched MI3 last night. That one was equally as good to me. Between the Vatican heist and Bridge attack, they were both very well shot and coordinated.

Meh, I don't believe Cruise had to ever hold his breath that long.

Those cameras are big and heavy and bulky from what I hear. I know they could have figured out a way to securely anchor it, but, man, if the camera came off the plane.......The thought of that is even creepier than hanging off the side of the plane. Sounds like the plot for an episode of Castle. :woot:

Ghost Protocol must've spoiled me on M:I movies, because I can't think of any element of Rogue Nation that wasn't supremely competent, and yet my only thought after it ended was, "Well, that sure was a Mission: Impossible movie all right!"

Has anyone else besides Nolan ever strapped an IMAX to a plane before? I don't think I've ever heard of an IMAX camera being attached to a plane besides Nolan doing it for Interstellar, and it's understandable that he would do that considering the nature of the movie. But he had one specifically built into the nose of a learjet to do certain scenes.

I guess if McQuarrie had wanted to shoot a significant portion of the film in IMAX it might've been possible, but it might've not been feasible for whatever reason (financial, practical etc) to modify an IMAX camera for just one sequence.

That being said, I'm not a frequent IMAX-goer so I can't comment on the differences between the final products.

I think the plane scene was all it needed to be. And all it could be, really. Hanging off the plane is the centrepiece of the sequence. I didn't expect it to
open the film. It's a toss up for me between the MI3 cold open and this one. Really loved how they morphed into the title sequence here when Cruise pulled the ripcord, too. The definition of a thrilling teaser introduction.
The car and motorcycle chases were my favourite sections. Cruise picking up his sunglasses and roaring off = :woot:. He looked great speeding around those corners. The underwater scene lived up to my expectations. Rebecca Ferguson lived up to the hype as well. Well played by her but also an interesting, ambiguously written character. I love the humour in these films too, especially in the last two. The team dynamic is fun.

That was my favorite MI movie yet. I loved it! :D
9/10

They also referenced the other films. Baldwin mentions being at Langley during the heist in the first one. Obviously they showed the warhead hitting the building in GP. And there's a rabbits foot on chain to the handcuffs in the beginning. Not sure if there was a reference to the second one though.

Those of your familiar with the M:I TV series, does Rogue Nation play like a "Mission: impossible" movie? Or is it more like a straight up action film?

Basically just curious if there are any nods/influences of the original series in there...

After my second viewing I definitely know that I liked Ghost Protocol more. Rogue Nation is a good film and does some things better but I had more fun with GP.

Aight! This was great.

Ya'll can come at me, but I have had more fun watching these films than the last two Bond films.

Rebecca Ferguson tho! Hnnnnngh.

Saw it at the TCL Chinese .
NO visual or sound problems
Good movie.
I think GP was better but RN was clever and fun.

Yeah I thought
at the end when Baldwin said he was in on it the whole time, that was him lying and covering his own ass while also just protecting the IMF after he saw how useful and important they were, hence the confusion from the Senate and how humorous the scene is. That end scene does not work or land without the arc of Baldwin going from being against IMF to being with them.
There is NO QUESTION that this is what happened .
That is why my audience was laughing at that final scene .

I totally agree with the Doc.
Washington DC and self serviing hypocrites/liars??? Say it ain't so!!! Plus, anyone who hangs at The Prancing Pony has to be right. Loved Renner's last line to the Senate Committee. Classic.

That got some really good laughs at my showing.
