So this wave was actually released a while back as 2 2-packs, exclusive (I Believe) to Hot Topic or something, and recently (finally) released as an official Wave in single card packaging. The Wave is apparently based off of the MK side game Shaolin Monks, and includes Kung Lao, Lui Kang, Scorpion and Sub Zero. The latter two are in their more iconic looks as opposed to wave one's Annihilation looks.
So let me start off with some general comments that relate to all figures. These guys need hand articulation something fierce. I know that some people like thier accessoried figures to have preposed hands like these, but I personally found it damn near impossible to get the weapons into these guys' hands. And I also never have problems with articulated hands holding weapons. Perhaps we can all meet int the middle with form fitted articulated hands.....I wonder if anyone has attempted a custom like that.....with the right pin it should be rather simple.
While I am on the articulation topic I would just like to mention a slightly different ankle joint for better poses and a torso joint as well.
The Bases on these are really good. Just a simple round base with the MK dragon logo, but the foot pegs seem slightly larger than the foot holes. Not large enough that the figs wont go onto them but large enough that the figure will stay on them in even the most extreme of poses. I put scorpion on one leg doing a High Kick and he still hasn't moved in four days.
So lets move to the individual figures starting with Monks.
Kung Lao:
Kung Lao was first intorduced in MKII so it seems fitting that his action figure Debut also be in MKII (Though Baraka made it into wave one). Lao is the cousin of the MK Center Hero Lui Kang.
But enough about the Character.....this is about the figure. Overall I would say the figure is pretty decent. Nothing ground breaking by any means. The Sculp of his body is overall great. It looks like a fairly good representation of the video games. His head on the other hand looks to have less detail than a Ken doll. It's fairly bland. But that's alright because I keep his hat on most of the time.....because it won't fit into his hand.
Which Brings me to Accessories....Kung Lao Came with a Giant green sword, which I can only assume I don't understand because I never played any MK games past 3...and maybe one night of 4, and two mini sickle things that were cool looking. I had an awesome pose in mind for them but couldn't get them into his hands because of his nasty grip. So I ended up doing the same pose with two of Sub Zero's Weapons. And he also came with his hat....The Hat is a maleable rubber like material and won't really stay in his had for a cool throwing pose, but it does sit on his head like a beauty.
The articulation of the figure is decent. Who am I kidding, I gues this figure's Articulation would be rated as Great if not for the massive leaps forward that the Marvel Legends line has made. It is still well above DCD standards but slightly under my hopes.
Overall Kung Lao will recieve a 6/10. He scored kinda low for a couple reasons. Hie face being the primary one. And the fact that I was never a huge fan of Kung Lao to begin with, though that shouldn'y be a factor....but it is. The hat lost him points as did loose leg joints. Sadly my Kung Lao will never be in a kick pose like Scorpion is, but he makes one hell of a recipient.
I am saddened that my Scoring was low due to my Personal feeling for the character and the fact that mine was slightly below the standard (that should be) set by Jazzwares. If you don't find my review helpful piss off.
Next up: Lui Kang.
