Movies considered "classics" that aren't that great

You do know that the movie gods weren't waiting up in heaven for you to be born before they bestowed us with good movies.

Heh, I don't blame him if he can't get into non-contemporary stuff 'cause he's been spoiled by certain standards, but th^t's funny.

No, I've been meaning to. I got the special edition of both films about four years ago and didn't get around to seeing the first one until early December. But it's on my list of films I have to see.

It's really good, it's biggest problem is how incredibly slow it is, in terms of the length of each shot.

I hear it's good. Slow films never really bother me unless they're so slow it's rediculous. If a film is slow because it's trying to build up tension, so be it. It's for a good reason. But there are some miniscule moments in TFC that could've been streamlined with little loss to make the story flow a little better.

Most movies that critics consider classic like Gone With The Wind, Citizen Kane, Ben Hur, Casablanca I have never and probably won't ever see.

I was born in 1976 and somehow movies made before I was born don't interest me.

You know, I only recently had the pleasure of watching Citizen Kane. Now, I had always heard the hype about this movie, but just dismissed it as nostagic movie critics, hardcore film fans and the like.

But I have to say that movie in particular blew the top of my ****ing skull off, dude. It not only lived up to the hype, it totally surpassed it.

The acting, the look of the film, the deep scope of the story...I mean, god damn!

It looks and sounds like no other movie of its time.

Highly, HIGHLY recommended.

EXACTLY!

When the AFI came out with the 100 Years 100 Movies (the quintessential, albet flawed greatest movie list) I had seen about 10 films on that list. And I considered myself to be a film aficionado. :whatever:

So I decided to watch all 100 movies. It took about two years of intermittent classic movie watching, and I had to force myself to watch a good bit of them. There are a few movies on that list that I don't particularly care for, but there are so many that became instant favorites. The Graduate, The Apartment, Singin' In the Rain to name a few.

Some of these old movies are that friggin' good.

I agree Citizen Cane has to be the greatest film of all time. It blow my mind when i first saw it since it was so beyond it's time. I really don't understand why critics didnt like it at first.

The Godfather and The Godfather Part II (the only thing that stands out is the acting, which alone doesn't make a masterpiece; greatest film ever made is a stretch that not even elastic man could make).
The Exoricst (when it's not boring, it's unintentionally funny with it's ridiculously over the top exorcism scenes; The Exorcism of Emily Rose is a vastly better version of this).
The original King Kong (The dated effects aren't the problem, they couldn't even make characters out of the characters, let alone out of the creatures. Ann selfishly tries cashing in on Kong's capture when they get back to NY, they never cared about each other at all, she was simply terrified of him the entire time and Kong was nothing but a one-dimensional big dumb brute that likes to grown and break stuff. The intended message of the film doesn't come across at all because of laughably bad execution across the board).

Wow - that takes true dedication. Tipping my hat off to you, sir.

I have these books I got as last year's birthday presents: 1001 Films To Watch Before You Die or something like that, and while that helps consolidates the films I have to see, I'm still no closer to doing that because of lack of active pursuit of these films, other than occasionally catching it on cable or tv.

Even with cinema, and while I see movies I am able to see, I still draw up a list of those I have yet to or want to see, and the list although is small, has the sense of ballooning over simply because there are upcoming movies that almost take priority over the 'old' ones.

2001: A Space Odyssey is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. A film so boring and slow can't be good.

When someone says Casablanca and Dr. Strangelove (two of the greatest films EVER MADE) are not that good because "the dialogue is unnatural," given one is a '40s drama and the other a dark comedy is wrong on SO MANY LEVLES. Why not complain how in almost every superhero movie dialogue is extremely forced. There are very few relations in superhero movies I've seen that seemed natural (Logan and Rogue in X1 is the only one I can pull off the top of my head).

Anyway, to this htread's credit I'll name a few. The Birds, the only overrated Hitchock movie on the planet, which was still ok but a huge step down in quality from his previous stuff, but because it is more mainstream it gets more attention.

They Died with Their Boots ON is another too though.

Wrong. It's like sipping tea or chuggin' a bottle of Jolt cola in 3 gulps.
Some people like to sip the tea.
It can be good whether it's your thingy or not.

Again I agree.

It's one thing to be ignorant and not know, but it is entirely another to choose to be stupid, or in other words to remain ignorant. Don't be so myopic. You do know that the movie gods weren't waiting up in heaven for you to be born before they bestowed us with good movies.
How are you going to call someone a myopic for deciding not to watch a movie?

Forrest Gump was great movie and I still can't understand some people, when they say it was very boring film.

What about Citizen Kane, it was classic, which can't be named bad movie. It was fresh and new during it's time like also was Fight Club.
