Well, another day, another lesson learned. Don't be white walking through Harlem alone at 4 in the morning. Was leaving a good friend's birthday party. Had outlasted all my friends in the drinking department, so I was the last to leave the apartment of the family that threw the party. Then on the way to the subway, was jumped by two guys, and beat down pretty badly. Broken nose, partially crushed windpipe, black eye. Took my wallet, cell, keys, cigarettes, even my chewing gum. Bastards. They could have at least left the gum.
First time in my life I think I've actually been rendered unconscious. I'm not sure if it was the choke-hold or the pummeling of the face that knocked me out, as there was much of both to be had. I struggled to get away, but I remember thinking not to throw a punch or elbow, since they had me outsized and outnumbered. I didn't see any weapons about to be used on me, and the guy strangling me just kept saying "go to sleep, b**ch" so I figured they weren't trying to kill me as long as I didn't piss them off by getting in some hits.
I remember it felt sort of like being drowned, like someone was pulling me underwater as I struggled to get air, and then all of a sudden I was having a relaxing dream, with sort of a soothing underwater feeling. Then all of a sudden it was like rushing up out of the water into hard air, gasping, covered in blood, instantly realizing what had happened, with my pockets empty. It wasn't like a normal sort of groggy awakening at all.
Initially, while still pretty traumatized about the whole thing in the ambulance after I'd called the cops, I remember thinking "f**k NY, I'm going back to Pittsburgh" but now I'm actually in pretty good spirits. As soon as I calmed down, I realized that I'm not gonna let an experience like that sour my image of NY. Just gonna have to pay a little more attention to where I am, and when I'm there.
Hopefully since my nose is a bit ****ed, and it hurts to speak, and sounds like I swallowed a frog, they'll be cool with me not coming to work on monday. Door to door charity work pretty much relies on me looking non-f**ked up, and being able to talk a mean game.
