New Joe Fridays Week 8
oe Quesada is off to WizardWorld: Chicago and spends part of his 7 & 1/2-hour flight delay (no lie) answering 20 Reader Questions before this weekends convention news-fest. The return of this lady to your right and Marvel Boy? Wolverine Meets Die Hard? More on Mighty Avengers? These are just some of this weeks topics.
Oh, and that plane never did take off. Looks like Joes in for early morning flight
Reader Question: HankChinaski - With the new Dr. Strange comic out soon there is a question as to how it will fit with J Michael Straczynski re-imagining of Strange that came out a few years ago...will that still be the origin or are you dumping Straczynski's Marvel Knights book?
JQ: HankChinaski, we're not dumping anything. As you know, Marvel Knights is an imprint in which we will be doing more and more stories like JMS' Doc Strange. It allows creators an opportunity to tell stories in a different fashion without the trappings of continuity. Azzarello and Corben's Banner and Rodi and Ribics Loki minis were very much in the same vain. As you may or may not know, JMS' Doc was actually a screenplay he had written for a Doc Strange movie that we repurposed and turned into a comic book.
RQ: Nychavok - A few weeks ago you teased that Dr. Strange will or may end up on a super-team by year's end. Now, with the announcement of The Mighty Avengers, is there a big chance that Stephen will end up on either Mighty or New Avengers? Or will he join an entirely different team?
JQ: Did I tease this? Seriously, I don't remember every saying anything like that, Nychavok? That said, this is a perfect opportunity to plug Brian K. Vaughan and Marcos Martins Doctor Strange: The Oath, which reestablishes Doc in the Marvel Universe in a very big way!
Newsarama: Joe, since you mentioned it, you didn't say this, the solicitation copy for issue #1 of that limited series did...
"This limited series will firmly establish Doctor Strange in the current Marvel Universe as well as setting him up to join a surprising new team!"
So, the questions still stands..?
JQ: And my answer remains, wait and see.
Damn you Marvel solicits!!!!
RQ: fazeforce" - Are we ever going to see the Noh-Varr Marvel Boy from the Morrison series, and if so, will it be in the 616 Universe? This is a great character that isn't being used. You guys could be sitting on another Sentry here! Hope we see him pop up.
JQ: Oh, we're very aware of that, fazeforce, we are very aware. Make sure to check out Civil War: Young Avengers/Runaways, there may be a small guest appearance. Can you say. "snap!"
RQ: haverchuck" - Will there be a Reckoning War that was brought up in She-Hulk v2 #3?
JQ: Things are bubbling on the She-Hulk front, haverchuck, so keep reading!
RQ: motteditor - As a longtime fan of the Avengers -- and a fairly vocal opponent of Bendis' version of the series -- why should I have any reason to look forward to Mighty Avengers? Obviously New Avengers is selling well, but just as obviously there's a segment of the audience that doesn't like it -- why not launch the new book with someone who's not as polarizing?
JQ: Motteditor, I get it, you don't like Bendis, that's cool, you've made it pretty clear across the 'net that you feel that way. That said, New Avengers under Bendis is arguably the best selling comic in the entire industry. So, while fandom is divided on almost every single thing done by every single publisher, judging by the popularity of New Avengers, they're not really all that divided on this issue. And yes, while we could launch a second Avengers title with someone who is less polarizing for you, I think you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who is going to have boatloads of people running to their retailers to purchase this title than Bendis and Frank Cho.
RQ: Hurnslice" - Any plans on who will be taking over Wolverine for issues #48 and 49 - after Guggenheim (who has been great) and Loeb (who will be great)?
JQ: Hey, Hurnslice, in Wolverine #48, Marc Guggenheim and Humberto Ramos provide an epilogue to their Civil War tie-in arc. It will examine, among other things, just how Wolverine survived Nitros mega-blast in issue #42.
In Wolverine #49, Rob Williams (writer of ComXs Classwar, voted Wizard magazines Best Super Hero Comic 2002) and Laurence Campbell (2000 AD) provide a double-sized X-Mas special, entitled Better to Give
Its kind of Logan meets Die Hard. The story: Its X-Mas Eve, and Logan is doing some last-minute gift shopping in a famous midtown Manhattan department store when the $#$@ hits the fan. A terrorist organization that calls itself Black Christmas shuts down the entrances and takes everyone hostage. Theyre got bombs lots of em and theyre going to blow up everyone if their demands arent met. Its up to Logan to stop them and save the day. But what he doesnt know is that Black Christmas has another, more sinister agenda involving a poor little rich girl who just happens to be in the store that night.
RQ: Kid In The Helmet - A few years ago you were working very hard to rebuild bridges with creators that hadn't worked with Marvel in some time. Can you give us any updates on current attempts? Is there anything realistic in the works? There are many of us that would love to see you eat a bug to get the likes of Alan Moore or John Byrne back in the House of Ideas.
JQ: Well, Neil Gaiman's Eternals is something very current that came out of meetings like that. As for Alan Moore, while we mended fences, I believe that Alan is happy doing his own thing.
As for John Byrne, I don't know what to say except that Mr. Byrne has made it very clear on more than one occasion that he has no desire to work for this current regime at Marvel.
RQ: Jedi Balam - Will we see more Ladronn art? I mean, besides Planet Hulk covers.
JQ: Mmmmm, it's a distinct possibility. Ladronn's current covers on Planet Hulk have been breathtaking and we would certainly love to have him do some sequentials.
RQ: CandidGamera - Will there be some specific on-panel explanation of the complete 180-degree turnaround that Reed Richards seems to have undergone as far as characterization? Mind-control, Skrulls, brain tumor, something?
JQ: CandidGamera, no mind control, not Skrulls, no brain tumor. Nothing. But defiantly more insight can be found in FF #540! I know, I know, I'm a stinker.
RQ: czhorse - Magneto is one of the few characters whose origins are tied to historical events. Since we're now going on 70 years since the Holocaust, it is increasingly difficult to think of Erik as both a Holocaust survivor and an able-bodied, physically capable character. Has there ever been any thought given to either changing his origins (though its hard to imagine an equally effective alternative) or tweaking his powers to explain his longevity?
JQ: Hey, czhorse, for a question such as this, I like to go to our resident expert on all things X-Men, X-Men Senior Editor, Mike Marts.
Mike Marts: Okay, czhorse, ready for this? What few people know is that once upon a time, Magneto genetically engineered a being called Alpha the Ultimate Mutant, who eventually fought against his creator and turned him into a baby. Charles Xaviers colleague Moira MacTaggert cared for the infant Magneto for a while, until the ShiAr agent Eric the Red transformed Magneto back into an adult, but as a younger man than he was before. Thus the reason why Magneto appears younger than he actually is!
JQ: See, wasn't that simple!
RQ: Saint Zero - Is it just coincidence that Iron Man can detonate Nitro at will, via the armor? Or should I believe conspiracy rumors that Iron Man started the whole thing?
JQ: Yes.
RQ: Chris Noeth - Do you think printed comics will live for another 30 years?
JQ: I honestly don't think so. I think the future of comics is going to be via fans receiving our content in electronic form.
RQ: Radiate - Love what you've been doing for Marvel all these years. Putting the company on the map has been inspiring, kudos. Now, here's a question that'll be interesting to hear your answer. If you were E-i-C of DC Comics, what would be the five biggest changes you'd do? Like with Superman? Or with titles, etc.?
JQ: While of course, like all creators I have ideas for many characters, Marvel and otherwise, I wouldn't go into detail here in a public forum. Why would I want to give the competition a leg up [laughs].
In all seriousness, the folks at DC have been doing a great job and they should be applauded for all their hard work.
RQ: Howard - Joe, at last year's WizardWorld: Chicago con during a Cup O Joe session this image was part of your slideshow. The description written up by Matt Brady said, "And the symbol above is a 'mystery design' teaser image that Marvel says is for a "Deadly return in 2006."
While 06 isn't over yet, am I missing something or has it not come into play yet? Or was this related to Deadly Genesis?
JQ: Howard, that image is the symbol for Clan Akkaba, a secret society that worships Apocalypse and has existed throughout the ages. It was used in X-Men: Apocalypse vs. Dracula, X-Men and New Excalibur and coincided with the return of Apocalypse.
RQ: booston" - Joe, in House of M #7 Dr. Strange suggests that Scarlet Witch brought Magneto back to life following Planet X. This neatly wiped away all of the mess over Magneto/Xorn being two different people and reaffirmed what was a great ending to Morrison's run on New X-Men. What was the need to bring it all back up again in New Avengers and make them be two separate people (which was never Morrison's intention)?
JQ: Okay, you asked for it booston. In the past I've stated, right here on New Joe Fridays, how cranky Executive Editor Tom Brevoort can be. So, just for $#!@$ and giggles I'm going to wander into tom's office and ask him this little chestnut.
Uh-herm, excuse me Tom?
Tom Brevoort: WHAT!
JQ: Ummm, I don't mean to interrupt, I can see by the three-foot stack of paper on your deck that you're knee deep in- - -
TB: For the love of Pete, will you get on with it, I've been trying to reach Mark Millar for the last three days and I just got word that he's been in L.A. as a guest of Hefs at the mansion.
JQ: Wow, Civil War really is getting mainstream notoriety!
TB: You think so?!? I hear McNiven is going on tour with Supernova!
JQ: Hmmm, okay, listen, I have this question for New Joe Fridays.
TB: $#@% you!
JQ: Booston asks, In House of M #7 Dr. Strange suggests that Scarlet Witch brought Magneto back to life following Planet X. This neatly wiped away all of the mess over Magneto/Xorn being two different people and reaffirmed what was a great ending to Morrison's run on New X-Men. What was the need to bring it all back up again in New Avengers and make them be two separate people (which was never Morrison's intention)?"
TB: Because nobody was satisfied with that offhanded non-explanation, and it didnt make a heck of a lot of sense by itself even as a throwaway. Why would Wanda have done that?
Now get out!!!!
JQ: See, I told you he's cranky.
RQ: loki4ever - Joe, will we ever see the return of the Scarlet Spider (Ben Reilly) in the 616?
JQ: Not any time soon that I'm aware of. Then again, it's not like I would actually tell you if we were.
RQ: mrbvenom - When asked during a Q&A what he would have done in X3, Brian Singer recently mentioned at the San Diego Comic-Con that he had 1/3 of a script treatment on his computer. He also stated it involved another powerful X-villain from the comics. Now, I know he and his team are still poised to do some Marvel Comics work Ultimate X-Men. However, has Marvel given any thought to approaching him to tell his 'unfilmed' X3 story as a sort of 'What If' takeoff? There are scores of fans that would love to see what he would have done with X3 vs. the movie that ultimately was filmed.
JQ: No, I couldn't se how he would even have time as currently, he's working on his Ultimate X-Men run.
RQ: rook74 - Are we going to get an explanation of how Thor's hammer got rebuilt and ended up traveling through different dimensions??? The last time I saw Thor his hammer was shattered and he had mastered the magic of the runes, I think real Thor fans would like to know if you guys have any plans to reveal what happened.
JQ: rook74, be patient, the whole story of Thors return will play out across the Marvel Universe in the coming months. Come on, you waited this long, right?
RQ: Corey291: - The Beast is just about my favorite Marvel character. Are there any plans to change Dr. McCoy back to his blue ape form?
JQ: That's a great question Corey291! At recent X-Men panels I've asked for a show of hands as to people's favorite versions of the beast. I have to honest, I'm an old school, flesh and blood, Hank McCoy fan myself. So, while there are no current plans to have the Beast revert in any way, what do you folks here on Newsarama think, what's your favorite version?
Note: I will use this poll as leverage against my editors [laughs]!
RQ: piper - During the Marvel Civil War panel in San Diego, you mentioned that there were plans for Wanda Maximoff. Can you tell us some? Will the Scarlet Witch appear anywhere than in the next run of Young Avengers, as had been mentioned earlier?
JQ: New Avengers #26
[see the Alex Maleev cover at the top of this Q&A].
Newsarama: Okay Joe, let's wrap it up with a solid tease or two - what should people be keeping their ears to the ground for this weekend?
JQ: Look for news on Mike Turner's Marvel project and the next wave of Young Guns!
