At a time when horror and franchises are really the only surefire bets at a post Covid and strike impacted box office, the 51-year old horror property about a chainsaw-wielding serial killer still has potential to make a killing.

One of the parties, we hear, showing interest in reviving Texas Chainsaw Massacre is filmmaker/scribe JT Mollner and producer Roy Lee hot off their $3M grossing, 96% certified Rotten Tomatoes cult hit Strange Darling. If Mollner gets a script together, word is that Glen Powell would like to read it, for a possible starring and producing gig. It’s very early days on this; no contracts or attachments as of yet and the Mollner/Powell combo is but one interested party out of many (though we’ve heard that Lionsgate, A24 and others are expressing interest in that version). Also, don’t be shocked if NEON jumps in the fray post their work with Oz Perkins on Longlegs, The Monkey, and upcoming Keeper, they’re looking for their next big horror film.

The original TCSM is an incredible piece of filmmaking and one of the greatest horror films ever made. Nothing else in the franchise has come close to it IMO, and I'd be surprised if this turns out to be anything other than than a generic slasher (nothing wrong with slashers, but the original was so much more).

But there is plenty of interest, including players who are huddling on potential (read: potential) packages. One mentioned is the teaming of Powell, Strange Darling filmmaker J.T. Molner, and producer Roy Lee. Another name mentioned as been It filmmaker Andy Muschietti.

Has any franchise been rebooted as many times that has not led to a franchise? I know we mock all the Terminator 3s, but this one must take the cake.

Only the original and the 2003 remake seem to have made any kind of impact.

This is not a valuable franchise.

They tried after 2003 but realised they messed it up by cutting off Leatherface's arm, so they had to go the prequel route which wasn't needed.

Can’t they just kill off Leatherface already? He’s the only one of the OG slashers who hadn’t died yet and he’s not invincible!

I do feel like TCM is a strange thing to keep attempting a franchise with because you’re never going to come close to what Hooper did with that first one, much less dare to top it.

There was just a tangible quality to that film that can’t be replicated.

You cant replicate the Impact etc the series had, but i think you could still manage something pretty neat.
There are themes that could be tackled with TCM, but not if you seek to make a generic slasher.

Im still interested in a Rob Zombie TCM, no matter if that would be good or bad.
Just because he fits the vibe of TCM so well i think.
His movies could easily fit into the TCM universe.
