I don't see having angelic scar tattoos is any different than countless people today having crosses and passages tattooed on their bodies while also being a fun loving character.

He did have some bits of a fun personality. His spiel about the circus. The situation wasn't exactly a good one to showcase that part of his personality.

And with the obvious change of mutant relations most likely not being as anti-mutant DoFP left off with, they can change the meaning of them representing sins to his faith in his religion.

Tattoos are not self punishment for sins. IIRC, that's why Kurt was doing his scars. That's his motivation.

Also, this is a teenage version of Kurt. I think it is a bit this distubing because it is sort of a mix of self-harm and fanaticism. But, who knows, there could be a different motivation in this movie.

Didn't Kodi say he was reading a bunch of books on religion and whatnot in preparation for the role? I felt like he mentioned Nightcrawler's faith in some of his interviews, so I bet there will be some kinda reference to it be it the same as X2 or a totally different reason for the scars.

If that person seems to be ritualisticly punishing himself due to said belief\obsession then a lot of people would find it surprising if they're a fun person. It does seem like trait of a more depressive person. Though then again they could always be manic depressive.

Except that its not a trait of a depressed person. Not inherently. Self-marking/self-punishment/cutting and tattoos are not limited to the depressed personality.

And someone with depression does not have to be manic in order to be fun or funny. They just have to be outgoing and fun. It shouldn't be surprising to anyone that someone who has some issues could also be fun.

That's a problem with people's perceptions of depression, frankly. Some of the most outgoing, humorous and fun-loving people suffer from depression.

Kurt could perfectly be fun in the movie. I have no problem with that. I love actually. And I also love that they're keeping his religious side alive. That's sounds like a great Kurt to me.

My problem with the scars is that it's not visually appealing to me and it's a disturbing mix of self-harm and fanaticism. For me that's a bit disturbing for a teenage version of Kurt. But... we'll see.

I know kodi said in his audition he had to do the lines from X2 with nightcrawler talking about the scars but when he got the apocalypse script to his surprised there is no mention of the scars at all

In X2, the scars were reminders of his sins, and him bearing the pain of the tattoos was his penance.
And you don't have to see it that way, it's how it was for X2 Nightcrawler. It's not an agree to disagree thing.

And I've been saying this movie can have different motivation.

The guy has a spiritual conviction for the scar tattoos. I think it's alright, and it makes him interesting to me, not just his powers.

Nowadays many people take scar tattoos for fashion purposes or something. Kurt's reason has more weight and meaning, and it's a part of what made him interesting to me in X2. I like being interested in the characters, I like them having different worldviews and convictions.

He is a man that, driven by religion, marks his body every time he makes a mistake/commits a sin. That's not a healthy behavior for me and that's not what tattoo is about. And if there are people who makes tattoo everytime they make a mistake, I'd think that's an unhealthy behavior too.

Like I said many times here, I love that they're keeping his religious side alive while being fun. I just think this behavior (if it is in the movie) it's unnecessary.

It's not about being healthy or not. It's about his conviction. There's nothing unhealthy about it for him. I especially liked that in X2, because it was exactly something that I haven't seen in many other superhero movies. It had interesting implications while making the character feel real and deeper. Many have tried something like that, but it usually had no impact on me.

If these movies were about playing things safe and "healthy", I wouldn't want to watch them. I want to be challenged with different stuff. And isn't that what X-men is about: different people? It shouldn't just be about looks or the colors of energy beams they can shoot from their hands and eyes.

Kids perhaps would like lighter versions of these stories, and not like there's anything wrong that, but I'd be out.

I understand what your saying about his scars adding depth to him. Don't think I don't want depth and complexity. I want them (the kids) to be just as well written and developed as Eric, Raven and Charles.

I love Kurt being a very religious person, but the idea of him having such strong faith in his religion to the point of marking his body everytime he "sins", adds him a layer that I particularly don't like. (considering, of course, it's the same motivation from X2).

I'm definitely not againt depth and complexity, if that's what you're implying. I just don't like this.

The scars are explained in X2, but really it's just to texture the blue skin. Otherwise you'd get people complaining that he's just a guy in blue paint, a la Apocalypse.

Don't worry, you didn't come off like a dick, although I thought you were trying to "bait" me into a "MCU vs X-Men" kind of thing with your comment "kids would like that". But don't worry.

I'm excited about the character anyway. =D
