The biggest selling point of the spots and trailers was the Wakanda charge at the end that didn’t make it into the film!
Yeh it was something just for the marketing. Like the main shot for the Thor Ragnarok Official Trailer.

I might get a lot of hate for saying this, but I really did prefer Howard's version of Rhodey than Cheadle's, but I also can see where Marvel was going with in terms of salaries. If Howard had just been humbled and worked with them, he might have been part of the crew to this day. But, this here is kind of what happens when you take things for granted and let your own personal ego get in the way.

They told him he'd be paid 8 million for the sequel then went back on that and lowballed him with 1 million. He was pissed and left. They hired Don Cheadle for that 1 million. Real cheap and scummy way IMO. Though I prefer Cheadle. It could have been handled far better.

I like both in the role, but having Howard around for the sake of continuity would have been nice.

Recasts are ****ty no matter how you look at it. And one thing I've noticed particularly with recasts of black characters is that they apparently go by the "one drop rule" when choosing actors, because you often have black actors with really dark skin that get recast by actors with really light skin, and vice versa (it's similar to how black characters often have kids that are mysteriously way darker or lighter, like the kids in the Cosby Show). It's really distracting.

I prefer Howard too, Cheadle's Rhodey never felt like Stark's Bff to me.

I hope the Superbowl trailer blows our mind and I hope we see Valkyrie in it.

Cheadle always looked too slight physically for me. It’s hard for me though to see Howard having the same chemistry with Mackie as Cheadle does.

Movie Spots for the SuperBowl: Avengers 4, Toy Story 4, Hobbs and Shaw, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark”

That can be a bit jarring, but it's just how most Black families are. It's not uncommon.

But I agree. If you recast a character; keep them looking similar. Not suddenly 4 inches shorter.

I always wondered what might have been had Idris Elba was cast as Rhodey. what do you guys think?

Cheadle is a great actor, but he doesn't scream US military officer. Maybe it's because we never see him on duty or kicking ass or so.
Btw, I liked the scenes Cheadle had with Mackie; however brief they are.

Elba as Rhodey would've been kickass!

I also wish Howard had stayed, although I understand why he left so they had to recast.

I wonder though if the writing would have remained the same. That's what failed the character IMO. They never gave him anything to do or make him more than 1-dimensional. Probably most of that is because they gave everything to Downey Jr (which is certainly understandable).
