I've been reading Batman, Batman and Robin, Batman Incorporated, and Batman Eternal since they started, but I've been getting caught up on Dark Knight and Detective Comics recently. I've now read all of Dark Knight and just finished Layman's run on Detective (leaving only Manipul's and then the current writer's two-parter and I'm caught up). So far, I'm very impressed.
I read the first arc of the Dark Knight when it was new, the one with Bane. It was pretty much the Michael Bay version of a Batman story. I liked it but not enough to keep going on the title. I shouldn't have kept going. I ended up LOVING Hurwitz' run. His Scarecrow arc was one of the the best New 52 Bat stories so far. I think I would have liked his Mad Hatter arc just as much (and I don't even care for that character) but the art change took me out of it. And what he did with the last two issues, the Man-Bat story, was phenomenal. He planted the seeds to make Man-Bat and his father Batman's equivalent of Spider-Man's Norman and Harry Osborne. It's a shame that he left the bat books after that. I'd love to see someone pick up on that.
As for Detective, I never did bother with that title. Well, I agree that Daniel's run wasn't fantastic, but it wasn't anywhere near as bad as people say it is. I actually really liked the first arc with the Dollmaker. I was getting bored of it by the end of his run though. Then came Layman, and I honestly think his run was great only made better by Fabok's art. It started wonderfully with Penguin, Emperor Penguin (who I greatly enjoyed), and the intermingling Wraith and Man-Bat stories. The Zero Year issue was the best tie-in that I've read thus far, and the Zero issue and the issue that followed up on that with Ras Al Ghul were both good. Sadly, Layman's run ended pretty unspectacularly with Gothtopia, which I felt was a gigantic snoozefest... but then, I don't like alternate takes in comics. I'm eager to finish up this title tomorrow. I loved Manipul's take on Flash; I'm eager to see what he does with Gotham.
So yeah, this was a great project. I still think Tomasi's Batman and Robin is the best run of the bunch, but Layman's Detective run is up there, as is Hurwitz' Dark Knight. I like Snyder a lot as well, but not quite as much as those other three.
I figure I might try to get caught up on Batman Superman next, but we'll see. I did read the first arc and enjoyed it, but I tried and couldn't stay interested in the second. Maybe I'll give it another shot.
All-in-all though, I've really been enjoying Batman since the New 52 started. Definitely my favorite corner of comics.
