Official Contest of Marvels II Discussion Thread

Phaed, I hope your Grandmother has either a long(er) fruitful life or a clean painless death. Well wishes!

Ok, back from the hospital for the second time. I originally came back, worked on the brackets...and, the exact minute I finished with the rematches, the phone rang. (When that phone rings that late at night, you know it can't be good news.) They said her vitals were dropping, that it might be it. So, back to the hospital we all go. When we got there, the nurse said she was showing signs of improvement now. She did seem more responsive; but, that just means she seemed to recognize us. She's still unable to talk.

Anyway, that's where things stand at this time for those interested. Thanks for the kind words and prayers again.

Location:

While the dimension of Otherworld is also known as Avalon, the island of Avalon is actually only a small part of the large dimension that is Otherworld. Other places within this dimension include Fomor, home of the Fomorians, Annwn, home of the dead, and many other locales associated with Celtic mythology. The Starlight Citadel is home of Roma and the base of the Captain Britain Corps.
In general, Otherworld is a High fantasy world; gods, elves, dragons and many more live within small towns and large castles with no heavy industry. Large forests and bright lakes separate the several islands and locations from one another. Otherworld is not primitive though, while sorcery and magic is a part of daily life, the Captain Britain Corps and Avalon possess highly advanced technology.

History

In ancient times, there were many ways to travel from Earth to Avalon and back, created by powerful men known as the Twelve Walkers. Six of the Twelve Walkers became corrupt and created false paths that would lead travellers to dangerous places or insanity. The actions of these evil Walkers caused a backlash from the human inhabitants of Earth against all magical creatures and many of these creatures followed the paths to relocate to Otherworld. Most of the paths between Earth and Avalon were destroyed and only a few remain.
After the death of King Arthur, his body was taken to Avalon by Merlyn. Somehow the city of Camelot was also taken to Avalon, including all the Knights of the Round Table.

Merlyn, Roma and the Starlight Citadel

Merlyn created the Starlight Citadel, located on a different island than Avalon. From the Starlight Citadel he founded the Captain Britain Corps, a group of superhuman heroes who would patrol the countless Earths in the Omniverse. Merlyn became the Omniversal Guardian and was assisted in his task by the Omniversal Majestor/Majestrix. His task was to safeguard the Omniverse against any threats and the technology Merlyn provided was capable of destroying entire universes that were a threat. When Mad Jim Jaspers appeared, Merlyn faked his death and was replaced by Roma as Omniversal Guardian. Saturnyne became the Omniversal Majestrix.
Years later, Mastermind conquered the island of the Starlight Citadel, destroyed most of the Captain Britain Corps and disguised himself as Roma. Mastermind wanted the Amulet of Right and the Sword of Might, two mystical artifacts who had once empowered Brian Braddock, also known as Captain Britain and his enemy Joshua Stragg, the Reaver. Braddock found the artifacts before Mastermind and discovered that he was the rightful heir to these artifacts. He used them to defeat Mastermind and Roma named him the new ruler of Otherworld, while she remained as his advisor. Brian recently left his throne after the events in House of M and returned to Earth.

The island of Avalon and the Celtic Gods

On the island of Avalon, home to the Celtic Gods also known as the Tuatha da Danaan, Druids would forge the magical artifact known as the Evil Eye. The Eye was given to Prester John, who travelled back to Earth with it. The Celtic Gods themselves would have an endless war with the Fomorians, who would try to invade Avalon repeatedly. The Celtic Gods would receive assistance from Thor in repelling several invasions.
One of the Celtic Gods, the Lady of the Lake safeguarded Excalibur, King Arthur's sword. She became a close ally of the Black Knight and even gave him Excalibur when he lost his weapon, the Ebony Sword. Years later, the Lady of the Lake gave the Black Knight his new weapons: the Sword of Light and the Shield of Night. In return the Black Knight became her protector. The Black Knight would often travel between Earth and Avalon and seek the Lady of the Lake for advice.

For ease, we'll figure everyone is transported to a different area within Avalon. Since last time we didn't have any inhabitants, this time we will have people within the city.

I'm going away for the weekend but I'll try to check in on my matches when i can (going to see the folks and they only have a 56k :()

This means that most of my debating will be done on sunday. Sorry to my opponents but i figured the least I could do was give you a heads up.

That's 6pm uk time I'm back so tat's like noon on sunday for our american cousins so we still get two whole days of debating. (most of my matches so far I've posted my debate on friday and had to wait till late saturday/sunday to even see my opponents debate so it's nice to get a little payback  )

oh and phaed, I'm not a religious man but I wish your grandmother a speedy recovery, both you and her will be in my thoughts this weekend.

Thanks for the kind words. My Grandma, or Nan as I've called her all my life, passed away this morning. Eventually, I'll get to my debates; but, for now, I'll probably be away for the day. If anyone needs any questions answered, just PM Wiegeabo or JH.

I'm sorry to hear things are going well with you grandmother Phaed. I can sympathize with what you are going through because my father died earlier in the week. This was the first chance I had to post anything here.

Thanks for everything guys but I really don't think I can focus on the competition right now. Take care and thanks for the birthday wishes.

I appreciate the sentiment Phere, maybe this isn't the right thread for the welcome back party...

No...it's great to have you back after your day of exile. My condolences, Powder. It just seems like the grief just comes in waves. One moment you're ok, next you're weeping like a baby.

Anyway, I'm glad I have The Hype to let me think of something else from time to time. For me, when I do my debates, I will be able to just focus on something else...and, I love this competition so much.

That at least is good to hear. I'm glad we can give you the much needed distraction.

So much sadness in this thread. I need to do something to cheer everyone up....

My condolonces to both Phaed and Powder. Death of a loved one is a sad event that is never forgotten only smoothed over to bring back the good memories you shared with your loved one, they are those that are the most important and should be cherished.

I'm sorry for your losses Phaed and Power. I don't know if ya'll are religious, but may God grant you rest and fair dreams of those you have lost.

Personally, when someone dies around me, I favor the irish wake style of rememberance. Get blitzed out of your mind and think about all the great things that happened, and all the wedgies they're giving Jesus now... oops, sorry, left over from when my uncle passed.

Man, it feels good to only have 3 matches this week.

I'm so sorry man, All my grandparents were dead by the time I was 12 so I can sympathise to a certain extent (although I wasn't quite as close with them as you clearly were with your Nan). Know that we're all here for you and if you need anything even just someone to talk to over the next few weeks we're here for you. Same goes for powder. I understand your decision not to take part but I hope check in on this thread every so often, even if it's just to talk about how your coping and to talk things through. Just to say...we're here to help in any way we can.

Phaedrus, if you want to suspend our matches till next week I don't mind, you aren't going to be on top form and these things can get kind of heated which may be the last thing you need right now. If you want to do them next week I won't mind cause at a time like this, family's more important than ever man...(that and I'm terrified of you pwning my ass :cwink: )

To you both my condolences.

Thanks for the thought, Hippy...but, the contest is important to me; I definitely want to keep it on track. Right now, we're cleaning house...but, later tonight I should get up some opening debates. The Famine one will be rather easy and get up first, as much of what I have to say has been said before. I see Pestilence vs. Domino as being another close one; if I was impartial and didn't have any debates to go on, I don't know which way I'd choose. They are each characters that can only advance with a good debate behind them. Finally, most of my focus will be on my Swarm match-up. That's a pretty cool character for me, and one that I was hoping to get.

I'll see you guys tonight.

Ok, all my matches have a first debate up. Bring it on, Zoken and Hippy!!!

(BTW, I know nobody would do it, but just in case, when voting starts, I don't want any kind of pity vote. This week has sucked...but, I don't want anyone thinking, "I can't decide...I'll vote for Phaed because of the crap he went through this week." That also goes for debates. Bring it on, just like I said. I sure am not going to back down.)

Man, get back from my vacation to Gatlinburg and get on hoping to have a laugh, and I learn of the deaths in Powder and Phaed's families. While I can't say that I know what you're going through (I've somehow managed to not lose anyone in my family yet, grandparents and all), I can say that I'm a religious man and that I mean it when I say I'll pray for you both. I know it's got to suck, but take care of things at home, and let me know if there's anything I can do for you both (not that there's much I can do, but you get the idea).

Now, to make things happy again, I'm gonna talk about my vacation. It was fun. A few friends of mine and I stayed in a chalet in Gatlinburg for the weekend and it was fun. We shopped, played pool, played air hockey, hot tubbed, etc. Saturday rained all day, but Friday was absolutely beautiful, so it balanced out. There were some problems with the chalet that made me mad, but overall, it was a good fun experience. We even got some good old fashioned inside jokes to take home with us, as well as some goofy moments we'll remember forever, and stuff. Some sayings that were developed while on this trip (all with a story behind them) were:

"Take a bath with a girl, get points with your buddies. Take a bath with your buddies, no points with your girl." My friend Ryan and I got in the hot tub, but for some reason it wasn't very warm. It was cold outside, so we decided to test the inside jacoozie instead. Problem was that the Jacoozi jets didn't work. That's the back story, the fun started when my wife and her sister walked into our bathroom with Ryan and I in a broken Jacoozi... meaning we were just taking a bath together. We realized it and ran for the hot tub as my wife mocked us. We were mocked the rest of the trip.

(this next one sang in a pirate's voice)..... "This be how a pirate eat's a hot dog....... Throw away the bun and you put it on a stick... dip it in some mustard, and that will do the trick.... Arrrrrrrr!" This one was sang throughout Walmart by me and my friend Ryan after I told my wife that a Corndog is how a real man eats a hot dog, simoultaneously to the time when Ryan was playing with a Jack Sparrow action figure

Try saying "Bebe, Cece, Bebo, Babo" 5 times fast. They're the first names of four singers that somehow entered a conversation, and seeing my friend named Ryan trying to say them was great... it resulted in about an hour of hilarious repeats, attempts, and slaphappy fun.

Anyhow... good times. It was also fun when my friend Ryan and I tried to convince one of the Gatlinburg show salespeople that he and I were a homosexual couple on the lookout for somewhere that would marry us. Heh, he was so proud of us
