Hmm, I like that Commando is resistant to telepaths, but Domina is a powerhouse, though maybe too powerhouse. Well, with her only being able to use one power at a time, she's not so bad. Okay yeah... Domina gets my vote.

So, I'm debating what to do. Having JH is beneficial in the recruiting phase, and I'm trying to decided if we should wait for him to get things in order, or if we should just continue on until he can get back. Any ideas?

    Our options:

    A) Wait for JH before we get into recruiting.

    B) Go ahead and start the "Contest Of Marvels II Sign Up Thread" and just give the people who want to be involved that much more time to make their list of chararacters they would want on their roster.

    C) Who knows when things for JH will get better, it's best to get this ball rolling, we've waited too long, and we'll just hope he's ready when the contest is scheduled to start up again.

I vote Option A. Since I'm busy catching up with the RPGs, this small hiatus will give me the much needed time to do so.

If we've hashed everything out (we may be able to get more locations during recruiting as new people bring in ideas), the I say B.

Although I think we should decide how the draft will be done so we can make it clear to all recruits before we start the signup drive.

When we draft, the plan is to start up a new thread that has the first post from this thread with all the rules and the character list. (Maybe to give JH a little more time, I might take the list of characters and find references to them, in case anyone has any questions on who they are. That way, every character will have a link to who they are.) From there, our recruitment will consist of the new thread, and maybe those of us who are involved in other threads to give us a little promotion. I know Sparta will probably be cool if we do a couple promo messages in his thread. Finally, for anyone who is friendly with other members of the Hype, maybe PM to let them know we're starting it back up and are welcome to join.

The main thing is to get across to everyone that this is something they will have to commit to for about 7-8 months; but, that there will be prizes. I think 6 prizes were given out for the first contest, with the winners getting a decent amount of comics. The best and worst of Round 1 will both get a prize, the best and worst of Round 2 gets a prize, then the First and Second place winners of the entire contest gets a prize. (BTW, I haven't figured out what the grand prize is going to be, yet. I'll come up with that later.)

I should have been more clear. I meant the drafting of characters, not new players.

If I remember how the computer program works (I have to double-check later), it goes through each person's draft list, adding characters in the order they want if available. But, if a person's list is exhausted, they can no longer draft, even though others may still be able to.

This can lead to unbalanced ownership, with players who have longer lists, and/or lists with characters no one else wanted, getting more characters then other players. Which gives them an advantage.

I don't have a problem with this. I see it as the player's fault for not taking the time to create a big enough list. Granted someone could get unlucky and all their characters get taken early, but with a long enough list, they would have been certain to get plenty of characters.

Yeah, our problem is the fact that we have so many characters in this tournament. Ideally, we'd have a drawing, with all participants getting to pick when their name comes up...but, it would probably be a big pain in the butt to get that all organized. And, to try to have everyone list in order all 512 would be a drag, not only for the person trying to figure out who they'd want, but also the person inputting all the lists into the computer.

What's your idea for the best way to handle it? Do you think we could handle getting the people who want to participate near their computers, let them all know on a certain time and day we'll be having drawings for characters (and, maybe those who will be busy can turn in a list for us to consult in picking)...it could be like the NFL draft? We can even have it go for two or three days.

When we did Season 1, I think we started out with about 16 contestants, and we had characters left over. If we're lucky and aim for 20 contestants, each person will have 25 characters (with remaining 12 handed out via either a lottery system, or take the back of the list that didn't get to pick first and give them the characters.)

What is the limit of contestants we'd want?

(Also, remember, we're allowing people this year to have a limited amount of characters, like only 10, if they so desire. They would only be allowed to win the final two prizes, though.)

    Ideally, we'd shoot for a number of competitors that's a power of 2, Like 16 or 32.

A live draft with 512 characters would take forever, and be nearly impossible to schedule. On the other hand, the computer program can do the whole draft in about ten seconds.

I think the way it was done last year was pretty good. Everyone makes a list, and this time we'd need to set a minimum of say 100-150 characters. Then the draft goes through with everyone getting characters until the lists are used up.

If there are any characters left over, we have another draft to select the rest of the 512. And keep having drafts until they're all gone (two, maybe three, drafts total should do it).

If someone wants a limit, that shouldn't be too hard to add to the program. And if people tell us their limits ahead of time, we should be able to adjust the number of players needed to as equally distribute characters to non-limiting players as possible.

I haven't forgotten the thread. I just was kind of waiting and hoping JH would make it back....but, figured by the time school started for my kid (Tuesday) I would start the recruitment drive.

Anyway, have a great 3 day weekend, guys. I hope you all have it off like me, and can just sit back and relax....maybe read a comic or two.

I'm at my brother-in-law's house at the moment and thought I'd stop in to give an update, and it's not a good one. My wife and I were looking at the finances and such and we estimate that we won't have phone or internet until maybe mid to late November (extremely sucky!). I never thought it'd take that long, but we have a trip planned to Gatlinburg Tennessee the second weekend of November and we both already have time off work for it, as do many of the people going with us, and since we're the ones heading it up, we can't exactly cancel... so in order for us to still make that, internet is the sacrefice (extremely sucky!).

That being said, do what you have to do. I trust you guys to do what needs to be done. If it hadn't started yet come November then I'll be eager to jump on board and play alongside you guys, but don't feel obligated to wait on me. Push come to shove, I'll just pick up some discarded characters at some point, I'm sure we'll have some.

Actually, the more I think of it, I might still be able to do a list and get involved, even if it means just running by the library or my mom's once a week or so. Eh, we'll see how far away it is when we need the draft lists, and I'll decide what I'll be doing then.

So yeah, Phaed, go ahead and get that recruitment drive going with my blessings. I'll try to stop in and help when I can, but unfortunately, it won't be often. I'm sure W can get a couple DTLers in here :), and everyone loves Trigger, she can schmooze a few participants I'm sure ;)

Well, if I don't say hey again, just wanted to say I miss you guys (oddly enough, I actually do). I also miss my comics, I'm a month behind and it's killing me! But I'll survive... and you know why.... because it's Big Brother Night! Heh, I wonder what it takes to actually get on the show :)

    See ya!

Man, that does suck. Plus, I can't talk about BB with you. Howie made a fool out of himself, Erika pulls out the impossible, and Janie finally smartens up. Plus, the worst endurance competition in the history of reality tv!!!!

I'll get things going this week, then.

I'm on two nights in a row!!! Though I won't be on for long. And yeah, Howie just dropped on my likable factor. Nobody.. and I mean NOBODY talks like that to Georgie!!! And yeah, Boogie's a whiner! Down with the loser of chill town (though I liked Will).

An idea about versions of characters. Instead of saying all characters are 'current version' unless noted, how about saying they're all 'commonly known' unless noted as 'current version.'

That way, even if they are multiple versions of a character, we've limited down to two versions that should be best known by owners.

Definitely. Before we have people turn in their rosters, you, Trigger, JH (if he's around) and I can look over the list and try to anticipate any problems.

One question: I'm not anticipating that we'll have over 25 people participate....last year I think we started with 16-18, and we lost about 4 of those as the contest went on....but, should we set a limit on the amount of people who can participate? If we have 25 participants, everyone would have at least 20 characters, with a few participants having one extra. If we get a whopping 30, everyone would have 17.

I'll also try to get the grand prize figured out. It will help people want to get involved if I have something to present, I guess.

Good to hear from you Powder (also, just so you know, we just started another Official CoM thread, so look for that one, as it will be the one we use). Sorry to hear you can't make it back, but maybe things will clear up for you and you can jump in mid season.
