The Dark Knight Official Critics Reviews of TDK

I just wanna say...this guy really, REALLY loves the film:

And if you can handle it, then you'll experience one of the deepest, most complex and finely crafted films in years. It goes without saying that The Dark Knight is the best film of the year; the statement that is harder to swallow, but equally true, is that it's also the best film in years. It also seems to go without saying that it's the best superhero movie of all time, but I can't justifiably make that statement. Why? Because it's not a superhero movie. Batman is not a superhero. Christopher Nolan is the first director to truly understand this, and the film reflects that in many ways.

Batman is not a superhero? OK. That will help me a lot when I watch this film on IMAX tonight.

^ yup, hence the title, but you'll see when you see the end of the film.

I wish people would stop comparing this to the Godfather films. I want a hero film, not a movie that embraces Catholic Sicilian mob culture. I don't any kid growing up thinking that lifestyle is The ****. It's just ****. The Mafia has kept the city of Naples knee deep in trash. And yet, the authorities have proven themselves capable of arresting the top leaders these past few years, without the aid of a guy like Batman.

lol, that really wasn't what I was getting at with the pic.

I don't see the Godfather comparisons either. This film has a handful of scene involving gangsters. That's about it.

It is amazing that is is right now #1 on imdb, but I don't see that lasting. I think it'll stay in the top 20. but I think it loses the #1 spot at some point. Just the way IMDB works.

The movie was captivating and you couldn't take your eyes off it.

TDK is Nolans' MASTERPIECE to date without a doubt. He may make another film that tops this one in his career, but until then this is his masterpiece.

Oh, and there were some scenes where different things were happening in different places but the actions were mixed in the editing, like Coppola did at the end of Godfather I and II. But yes, that's about it.

The comparations is in terms of scale and scope of the sequel. Like Empire Strikes Back. It´s the sequel that tops the original and becomes a classic in movie history. Simple like that.

i just have to say this is the best movie i have ever seen. tip of the hat to mr nolan. there were scenes where the joker actually creeped me out. there arent enough thumbs in the world to point up.

First of all Godfather has nothing to do with Catholicism. Just because it's a Christian denomination doesn't mean it's in any way cool to throw slurs out there and tie it to mob culture. It's like pointing to Once Upon a Time in America and say it's about dirty Jews and how they exploited our country and took it over or New Jack City and say it's about #(*&$^ high on crack. It's like someone saying random anti-semitic or racist stuff just dont post that crap dude.

Second, have you watched the Godfather? Because you certainly didn't get it. The entire point of the movies is how DESTRUCTIVE morally that life is and its hand in the downfall of a good man named Michael Corleone.

Godfather II was considered the first sequel to surpass a well-received original. Part of what made the Godfather I so WOW when it came out in 1972 is that the gangster movies at the time were considered a "pulp" or popcorn genre. Going back to the 1930s with Jimmy Cagney they were extremely popular but they weren't considered "serious" movies. Basically just as shoot em ups with tinny dialogue and stereotypical characters. Basically EXACTLY what comic book movies are today. Godfather blew people's mind because it was one of the best movies EVER and yet it was in this crappy genre. People lost their minds. They couldn't believe how good this mob movie was. IMO Godfather actually is a bit overrated but that's still the residue of that society-wide IMPACT of the movie being so much better than everyone had expected.

Godfather II came out and it was even better than the original. That REALLY blew ppl's minds. Such a thing pretty much had never happened before. When people talk about ESB and Godfather II they're talking about movies that:

1) is based on a wildly popular and excellent first movie
2) surpasses that movie on every level
3) somehow adds more context and layers to what you saw in the first movie... you had stuff like darth vader being luke's dad which totally changed everything obi wan said in the first movie. in the godfather it's how michael's story arch echoes his father's in the first movie and yet is therefore sadder and richer... it's like the themes of a classic opera (especially apropo considering the italian background etc etc)

On the other hand when ppl talk about a movie being like Superman 2, Star Trek 2, Alien 2, Terminator 2 it's

1) a movie that probably isn't as good intellectually as its predecessor but still overall an extremely good movie
2) generally more action oriented which "ramps up" the volume in terms of adversaries and obstacles for the protagonist
3) figures in more neatly with what audiences want/expect (although it may in fact be less in line with what the creator/writers originally wanted)
4) makes a lot of money (usually more than the first movie)

i doubt anyone will win any oscars.

Heath and Wally will probably get nominations for Supporting Actor and Cinematography, respectively. Anything else is probably a long shot, considering how it will probably be seen as a comic book film and hence not be taken seriously. If they take it serious though, it might get a few more nods.

PS - Damn! Its still at 94% on RT. I want a 95!!!! =(

I think it may secure an "adaptation nod" as well. It will be hard though, IMO, for the Academy to find four films more deserving than TDK. Could it be this years Juno?

Let me start by saying that, as a Briton, I still haven't seen TDK, so I am just speaking off the top of my head. But could this be one of those seminal moments in which a pillar of the arts establishment slightly estranges itself from the audience it claims to represent, with the intention of ignoring popularist media even if it is good?

The Oscars got raped this year in the ratings, general public have had enough of films they havent seen at the tops of the lists. If the oscars want any good viewership they need to put a fan favourite in its lists, and what better than the number 1 movie in the world. TDK has it all, heavy critical acclaim, strong early oscar buzz - for ledger, and a large fanbase, which i bet the oscars would love to attract. I predict tons of nominations for TDK. Deserving? maybe, maybe not, but it is very very likely.

I hope it is

It would be a huge boasting point for bat-fans and superhero fans to have a movie make the oscars and it could change things and hopefully open doors for future movies

-and I belive heath was better than Javier last year not only was he better he had more screentime and more dialogue, also alot more dynamic.
BUt
they are two very different roles if you ask me.
