Official DD Thread - Part 1

That's what I was thinking too. It'll be a different DD than what has been offered in the last 10 years.I just hope it isn't too jarring a change.

Then you're robbing yourself out of one of the best runs in recent history.
Seriously...That series was nuts.

And I'm not sure how I feel about the new DD movie...
He's my favorite superhero, so I'm gonna go set it regardless but the first one was just so bad, that I can't muster any faith.

I don't mind Waid, I just don't like this re-numbering crap. Didn't they just go back to the old numbering... it's very annoying!

I dont like the renumbering either but....at least its been more than a decade since DD's been rebooted to #1, whereas the Punisher for example gets a new #1 like every 2 years.

I don't care if it's been a decade since a new #1... they just jumped that second volume to issue 600 a year or so ago and suddenly we're back at 1 again. It's stupid and annoying and kinda turns me off of paying money for this new series. And seriously, if it goes toward the superhero route again I have less interest in it than the darker side.

Just to throw this out there, but if this rumor is true and Waid will be the new DD writer, it's not like a confirmation that DD will drift away from the grittier aspects and into lighter superheroics or anything. Waid is mainly known for that, and generally excels at it, but he can and does do more than that. In fact, he's actually in the middle of a fairly dark story with his BOOM! work.

I just think it makes sense at this point for DD to head in a lighter direction. After the past 10 years and Shadowland especially, you have to drill the concept of a lighter brighter Matt Murdock into the readers head to get the taste of the evil Beast Shadowland Matt out of their mouth.

I'm hoping that, if they do want to lighten DD up, the writer (be it Waid or whoever) finds a good middleground between dark/gritty and superheroics. Just swinging from one to the other would be too jaring for people like me who have never gotten into DD in his true superheroic past but loved the darker tone.

Yeah, I can see that happening for sure, just wanting to throw that out before anyone jumped to any assumption or anything.

I personally think it's a given that Waid goes in this direction. What I'm curious about is whether it will take to longtime DD readers or not. If we get something along the lines of what Karl Kesel and Cary Nord did years ago, I'll be satisfied.

I jumped in hardcore with Bendis (in back issue originally) so all I know is the darker Daredevil. I've tried reading stuff prior to that but never liked it. I didn't like the first six issues with Mysterio and Quesada... whatever that arc's called that people praise. I've read some of his previous run around the 300's or so but couldn't care enough to stick with it. I just don't think I prefer him lighter.

The first arc by Smith and Quesada was Guardian Devil. It was a pretty awesome story with a couple of unexpected twists (Karen's death and Mysterio's suicide) but was tarnished by retconning.

I read it when it was new. I was underwhelmed by it and didn't bother to continue Daredevil afterword. It wasn't until I got the first volume deluxe hardcover of Bendis's run detailing his first 12 issues or so (lumped in an ebay auction with stuff I actually wanted) that got me into the book.

I've been reading since issue #171, the original numbering, and most of it has been darker even then. I can read and enjoy both, but I think i prefer the gritty, street stuff a little more. Maybe if he goes the other direction we will get some interesting team-up, or villains that Ol' Hornhead doesn't usually see...

actually... not see :D

EDIT: Stupid post is stupid.

That looks more like one of those one page Origins of the Marvel Universe things that Van Lente did a lot of than the actual Daredevil book.

Mark Waid has been confirmed as the Daredevil writer. Marcos Martin will be one of the artists with Paolo Rivera.

Marcos Martin on DD? I'm convinced this is taking a lighter heroey tone more than I was before.

(I was actually secretly hoping for Camuncoli)

Paolo Rivera AND Marcos Martin on Daredevil? I think I gotta get this now, I love DD; but wanted a good point to jump on for a while now and this looks like it.

The extremely grim and gritty era of Matt's life had to end at some point.

...My head just exploded from reading such :awesome: news. I was willing to try it with Waid but with Martin on, I'm mos def getting it now.

Yeah, I'm glad that Waid is taking a new direction with Daredevil. While it's been great, the grim and gritty depressing take on Daredevil has now run it's course for 30 years since Miller revolutionized the Daredevil mythos, overall it's been consistently great, and it's sad that it ended with the wasted potential that was Shadowland.

But just like how a "legitimate" Lex Luthor could only last for so long, so could this take on Daredevil. Waid isn't going to camp it up or anything and it'll remain in it's noir roots, but at least he's going away from the "How can we ruin Matt's life now?" take, add in some more superhero elements, make it a bit happier.

I'm hoping Waid resolves the whole Kingpin/Hand thing though.I hope that isn't ignored.
