Right now I'm really worried that the end of this story is going to feel really rushed next issue

More like they dont have the rights to the name for an offical book so they are going use Shazam and get everyone used to it so when they do release a book the name on it will be Shazam!

Hmm, that's how they released the book in the '80s and '90s (It was called The Power of Shazam!), but they still called him Captain Marvel inside the book. On one level, I do understand why they want to try to get around that, but they've been doing it for awhile without a whole lot of problems in the past.

Which would be pretty ironic considering that it's been taking its sweet time with the story so far, but yeah, I'm getting the same feeling.

Not digging the name change, although I can kind of understand maybe wanting to get the whole Captain Marvel/Shazam name confusion out of the way by nipping it in the bud from the start.
Same here....changing Cap's name to SHAZAM will suck pure and simple. Billy is the one and only true Captain Marvel and the wizard is SHAZAM. You don't have to change what works for a character to write good stories. Cap's name, costume, and origin are perfect. I'm willing to be open minded about updating his origin (provided any changes are not over done), but leave the name and costume alone!

I can't see any way the story will avoid being a massive anti climax right now

I would have been happy with Captain Thunder or something else, but calling him Shazam is just stupid. As far as I am concerned, it is over for Captain Marvel, and this new Shazam character is a character along the lines of Scarlet Spider-a Captain Marvel derivative.

Although I'm holding out final judgment, I'm really worried that this will be yet another sucky New 52 interpretation.:csad:

Does the title Curse of Shazam put anyone else off right from the start? It's so dour for Captain Marvel.

Curse of Shazam doesn't sound right at all.

Crappy news for me. I was planning on dropping the book and now I gotta continue buying it.

You know that it'll be worth it

It should be called something fun like Power of Shazam or Adventures of Shazam

Curse of Shazam sounds really grim and depressing :csad:

Agreed, although I honestly can't say that I'd be too surprised if it's any sort of indicator of their planned story direction. S**t's way too grim lately.

I'm going to check it out but after the way the Marvel family have been treated lately I'm worried its going to be all dark and depressing :csad:

And not have any talking tigers :(

Yeah it will be, but I spend so much on comics as it is. I was really planning on dropping Justice League Dark after the I, Vampire crossover. But with Lemire on the book it's just going to be so freaking awesome that I can't turn it down.

There was no way I was ever reading Dark with Milligan on it.

Now...I'm excited for it.

Why no love for Milligan

I really think he'll do some really neat things with the characters  I've been digging Milligan on Justice League Dark but I think Lemire is a good choice to take over for him

You could trade wait on it to save money hippie hunter :)

Everything I've read from him outside of Hellblazer has been dreadfully mediocre.

And I really haven't heard anything good about JL Dark so far.

It's a clear sign that Johns does not understand Captain Marvel-which he never has, actually. But the real Captain Marvel hasn't appeared since COIE anyway-all Post-Crisis versions have gotten the character wrong, even Jerry Ordway's well meant and well done series. Captain Marvel is not Billy Batson in an adult body. They are two separate individuals who have a shared consciousness. They consider one another to be different people. That's where they got the character off track, which was actually in Roy Thomas Shazam: A New Beginning series, and then in the Giffen/DeMatteis Justice League.

Essentially, however, DC killed Captain Marvel with the lawsuit in the 50's and the character has never recovered and will never recover. All that is left of the Marvel Family is Black Adam as a Namor rip-off.

I would have liked to have seen the Marvel family having their own Earth and Billy having gotten the powers in the 50's. Real time. So he's like 70 something now. :o

What about Jeff Smith's mini?

Yeah this is all pretty dumb. You don't just change a character's name after over 70 years, and you especially don't give in to non-fans and the kindof people who think "It's the title of the comic, so it must be the name of the main character!" By that logic, you might aswell change Link's name to Zelda, Pinhead's name to Hellraiser, and Samus's name to Metroid. I would be livid as a fan of any of those if they ever did something that stupid.
