Official JLA discussion thread - Part 3

Knowing Batman, he tried to talk his way out of it.

J'onn, that wasn't just a cookie. It was a symbol. A beacon of hope. That the hard, crispy, wafer of darkness can protect the sweet creamy frosting of light.

Can't you see, J'onn? That's my burden. One I must bear alone, forever and eternal. One that I could not, would not, ever share with you. One that can be dunked in milk, but also crushed and spread on top of ice cream. You've never seen that kind of chaos, but I have. And I would not wish it on you for all the graham crackers in the world.

ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!! This made my night. If I could sig that whole thing I would, lol.

So, I finally got around to getting and finishing the first arc of the relaunched JL, and my impression that, at it's core, I sort of like the idea. A younger league, all of them a bit on the green side, with their own arrogances and egos and such. But I feel like Johns just took that too far and made the whole thing a bit of a wash, and there just wasn't enough time spent on the entire League (Wonder Woman and Aquaman barely got any time at all). I don't know, it wasn't awful or anything, I guess, but I was seriously underwhelmed. I'm not sure if I'm going to continue or not. I want to see what they do with Captain Marvel, so I'll probably pick up the second arc digitally when the price goes down or something, but it's kind of a big whatever kind of thing now.

One thing I am not liking about Superman is JLA is they make him more like Black Adam meaning he is always hovering above people much like how Black Adam did because he (BA) always felt like he was above them. I am not saying Superman feels that way but it just sometimes gives off that impression.

Well flight is one of his primary abilities and having him above the others with his other abilities strategically makes sense. Plus he prolly does think he is better than a human with a space ring, a human in a bat costume with a fancy belt, a guy who can run fast (something he can do to), an amazonian who isnt versed in our culture all that well and a half human half atlantean. This is a young brash Superman, makes sense to me.

Part of the reason behind this might be that it's easier to draw a character hovering in mid air than it is to draw a character standing on a flat surface. You don't have to screw around with how the feet are positioned, you don't have to worry about shadows or shadowing at foot level.

A hovering character also gives you more freedom when composing a frame with 2-3 or more characters in it; if everybody is standing on the same floor, you need to remember who's in front, who's in the back, who's taller than the other guy, how much of the guy in the back we'd realistically be able to see, etc. A hovering character makes it easier to compose such frames.

I don't think Jim Lee really worries about that kind of stuff at this stage in his career. Dude's been drawing crowded group shots for 20 years. It seems likelier that he's actively courting that implication of Superman as somewhat godlike compared to the rest of the League, hovering over even other heroes with high power levels. This is the same Jim Lee who likes to portray Superman with burning red eyes all the time, remember. ;)

Has the new arc been any better than the first one was so far?

Issue 9 was dumb setup. Johns is decompressing the hell out of JLA and Aquaman. In GL he hasn't been decompressing as much as the other two.

I actually thought issue 9 was a huge step in the right direction. I feel like I'm the only one enjoying this book.

I find myself drawn to it every month. I actually quite enjoy the main story.

#9 was definitely a step in the right direction. Before that, it was pretty bad, though.

Glad that you guys are enjoying it more lately :)

What's the Shazam back up been like has Billy become more likable yet or is he still making orphans cry :csad:

Also has Tawky Tawny shown up yet because i need him to appear in the new DCU

Gimme my talking tiger DC :argh:

There's a plump redheaded girl at where I work named Tawny, and every time I see her, I think of the Tiger. :o

Just picked up issue 9 after missing the first arc. This Graves guy goes from being human looking to monster looking? Wonder what is up with that.

I've actually been enjoying the Shazam backup from the beginning. I wonder what they'll call Freddy Freeman, I'd be surprised if it was still Captain Marvel Jr.

Well, there was a short flick of one of Billy's photos that included a tiger in a suit. I hope as well that Tawky Tawny will appear soon (as a little kid in the 70:s the talking tiger was quite an important part of the whole Shazam story to me).

Maybe it's harder to put in a talking intelligent tiger today than it was 30-50 yrs ago, but I'm still hoping they go old school on this classic story.

I also hope (as discussed above) that Billy will evolve from the "annoying bad kid" to someone more interesting quite soon, since that character quickly gets old and - just keeps beeing annoying.. :whatever:
