Yes in a series called One More Day in which Spidey made a deal with Satan to keep Aunt May alive. It made his marriage to MJ never happen and everyone in the Marvel Universe forgot who he was. However it seem that Mephisto (satan) was not the one who made people forget but some mysterious "WE" ,Peter and someone else that has yet to be revealed, did to make the world forget who he is. ...confused yet....it gets better.....
Strange isn't saying that you can't be the Sorcerer Supreme if you are tainted. What he's saying is that you shouldn't be. He doesn't feel like he himself deserves the role, because of the things he's done; he thinks that a better person should be SS. That doesn't mean that a worse person -- like Doom -- couldn't end up with the spot. There have been evil Sorcerers Supreme in the past. All it means is that -- in Strange's opinion -- the role should be given a really good, pure person, especially in current times.
