Colossus, Sunspot, Blink, Storm, Iceman, Bishop were basically just cardboard cut outs with super powers. They had some cool moments but i think between all of them they had like, 20 lines of dialogue.
But this is my favourite X-Men movie. The best thing about it was the sense of humour and character interaction. Quicksilver was off the chain, but it was contrived the way he wasn't involved in the greatest battle the X-Men have ever had even though he is probably the most powerful mutant we've seen thus far.
Best one yet. I give it a 9, would have been a 10 if they had spent more time in the future. The opening New York segment created an amazing Sci Fi dystopian future.
I gave it a 9 in the poll. I loved the movie. My only major critique is that I wish that the ending told us more about which events had happened in the new timeline - especially Weapon X.
Yea the thing is, if the events in this films 73 changed the worlds outlook on mutants to a more positive one, what is the need of Xavier's school? What is the need of the Weapon X program?
The more I think about it, I think DoFP might be slightly better than X-Men Origins. While XO:W has a more cohesive & less meandering plot, and doesn't have near as many extraneous characters, it also doesn't have much of an impact. I can't think of any scene that really stands out or resonates with me. Whereas DoFP at least had Quicksilver (who was a very nice surprise, especially the "Time in a Bottle" scene), Fassbender as Magneto and the OT reunion.
Both films suffered from clunky and arbitrary dialogue and story elements, which is why it's so hard to put one film over the other. DoFP also introduced many elements that served little to no purpose (all of the new future characters, the Vietnam scene, Stryker & Trask as a whole, shoehorning in JFK's assassination). The serum Hank and Xavier used was truly a WTF? forced invention. What good did it do that Charles could walk again? How would a serum that seemingly inhibits the X-Gene make his spinal wound better? Why did Xavier suddenly have a problem with the voices from Cerebro when this was never hinted at or alluded to in FC or any of the OT films?
My biggest problem with this film is that it was another case of plot being unnaturally forced on the characters, instead of the characters driving the plot. Nothing about how the characters behaved felt genuine. They all just became plot devices to move the story along. Kinberg's trait to have the characters overreact (and turn violent) to situations was also in full force: Wolverine & Beast's first meeting, Charles & Erik on the plane, Erik & Mystique in Paris, Erik's split from the group & his 3rd act choices. Basically everything involving Mystique felt wooden and flat. But then, I never bought her decision to go "bad" at the end of FC, and her arc in this film just didn't make much sense.
The dystopian future never resonated with me; the characters spent a lot of time talking about how bad it was and how outgunned they were, but they didn't act like they truly were in danger of extinction, and they didn't seem to be putting their all into their fights. It felt like a game, and their deaths had zero impact. If it weren't for the previous films you wouldn't even have any reason to care about any of the future characters.
Like with TASM2, the reason why I am so harsh on this film is because I liked the previous movies and I wanted to like this one. I was very happy to hear about Singer and the original cast returing. Kinberg is the reason why I had doubts about this film, and is ultimately the reason why I dislike it.
I don't understand why these Hollywood studios keep hiring the same writers to work on their sequels. Or the "bigger is better" mentality. If there is no heart or story behind the action, no matter how big it is I won't care. I know this is a hot topic for fans, but Christopher Nolan seems to be the only one who can consistently deliver quality blockbusters. Yes, he's not perfect; there were plenty of things I didn't like about TDKR. But the overall quality of the TDK trilogy is leaps and bounds above practically everything done by the other studios and filmmakers. I much prefer the smaller CBM films of the early 2000's (X-Men, Batman Begins, Hulk) that put more focus on character than on spectacle. I think the improvements in CGI have actually been more of a disservice to the film industry because it makes it easier to be lazy and less creative. Just because the more recent films feature huge sequences that are almost entirely CGI, that doesn't automatically make them better movies. The first Batman/Bane altercation is one of my favorite fights in CBM history because it feels real, like the outcome actually matters and has consequences. The big spectacles in Avengers, both Caps, T:TDW and TASM2 just leave me feeling empty.
But I digress. Maybe I'm just too serious for this genre, but I preferred the earlier scenes in DoFP that took place in '73 (Wolverine's arrival, the Mansion sequences) because it felt like it was actually happening. There was real weight because it didn't look like a video game. If there must be FX, as much practical as possible is always the way to go.
I agree with a lot you say. Especially about the opening future scenes. Too much telling, not enough showing (which funnily enough is a huge criticism i have with all of Nolan's Batman movies). The characters just felt like cardboard cut outs and i didn't really care for them. But the ending where the Sentinels were closing in on Kitty and Wolverine was very well done. It was tense.
But the Bane vs Batman fight is one of the most poorly choreographed fights i've ever seen in a major movie. And Batman throwing those smoke pellets at Bane made me laugh.

Rogue is still there and she still has the white streak, so obviously the world's opinion on mutants didn't change that much, neither didn't many of the events that happened.
Regardless of Sentinels, mutants still exist in the altered future, and the inherent fear from humans is bound to exist too. The ending wasn't supposed to say the world was perfect, it was meant to say some things changed, but not everything.
Rogue could have got her white streak in any number of ways - any stressful life-threatening event. Some other situation where Magneto was testing his machine (not necessarily on the Statue of Liberty). Or being captured by Sinister, or Apocalypse, or some other scenario.
Seeing Rogue with a white stripe in her hair doesn't mean X1 still happened exactly the same way.
Saw this movie yesterday. Loved it. Although the ending made me want an original X-MEN ensemble movie a.s.a.p
Poor Colossus. First, he gets his arm ripped of and his head caved in ... and later on he gets ripped in half. You see those Sentinels coming in ... grabbing Colossus and then rip him in half. The way his body falls to the ground made him seem super heavy! Attention to detail. Loved it! Storm gets impaled. This made Warpath seem completely redundant. I mean, he can sense Sentinels right? Why did his power fail him? Sunspot gets frozen and and later gets his arm cut off.. Lets not forget Iceman. Damn. You see his neck starting to crack under the pressure. His head sliding over the ground and the Sentinel doesnt give a **** and steps on it. Those were pretty brutal scenes. But, the no-blood scenes made this film easier to be PG-13.
I do hope that we get an original cast X-MEN movie though. Maybe White Phoenix Jean? Would be awesome to see that she mastered the Phoenix entity.
Singer created the perfect X-MEN movie. Loved the young and old cast. Even though the old cast wasn't featured much ... they got me hungry for more.
Can't wait for X-MEN Apocalypse.
A big fat 9/10! That's for sure. Now the long 2 years of waiting begins...

After what happened in DoFP i'm saying there is some puzzling questions left for us. It's not all wrapped up.
If public opinion and the governments opinion of mutants is much more positive, what is the need of a secret school like Xavier's institute? What is the need of the Weapon X program?

There are 30 years between Mystique saving the president and what we see in X1. For all we know Mystique could have tried to kill the president again once every year. Maybe it even became a National Holiday "March 31st, let's see which way Mystique will try to kill the president this year"
Basically in 30 years I'm sure there are plenty reasons the school had to stay open.

Not only that but why shouldn't the school be there? Even in a perfect world, mutants would still need help with their powers. Someone like Rogue for example like Xavier said in X1 is a danger to herself and others around her. She needs a place to go. So Xavier's school might have been a place for mutants to hide and learn to control their powers, but now can be a place where all mutants are welcome to learn how to develop and control their powers in a safe environment.
Exactly. Just because a mutant saved the President doesn't mean all normal people will accept them. We have a black man as President, but that doesn't mean racism still doesn't exist.
A very strong cast carries this movie into a spot right along side X2 and First Class as the best in the franchise. James McAvoy is the standout and the movie is placed firmly on his back and he delivers one of the best performances ever seen in a comic book movie. A rare movie where character's inner conflicts take center stage over all the stuff blowing up. It all works very well. Bring on Apocalypse.
I saw this yesterday and the day before it, and yeah...for as much hype as I had for this movie...as much as I wanted to love it....I totally freakin' did. Every single second was great! A few nitpicks here and there, but it's a damn solid film. 10/10 IMO. Definitely hoping this makes it to the billion $$$4 club. Well done, Singer.
OT: I bet Nell hates the ending of this film, lol.
I hate that because that was one of the better movies IMO, juggs, magneto, the fight at the prison etc.. Cyclops being killed was the shining moment for me.
In this new movie i didn't like the sentinals having some type of fan in the middle of their design and them being able to do all mutant attacks reminded me of X21 in that wolverine sabertooth movie.
So in this next joint who's gonna be in it from the Xmen side?
Wolvy
Charles
Jean
Cyclops (noo should remain dead)
Gambit
Storm
Colassus
Ice Man
Cable
Bishop

I can understand why people feel the way they do about that fight. I didn't notice any problems when I saw it in theaters, but the the flawed choreography is glaringly obvious in all of the slo-mo gifs that are floating around online. It's still only a nitpick for me, though. More than anything it's the atmosphere of the fight that makes it what it is for me. No music blaring, driving the flow of the sequence, telling us what to feel and when. No unnecessary CGI that has no weight to it. Just two ordinary (if highly skilled) people who's lives have led them to this moment. Batman, at that point in his life has never faced anyone that he couldn't beat in combat, so he's very full of himself. The quiet confidence that Bane has, being the elder, is just fun to watch. It's what the fight means that I enjoy.
And I agree that Nolan has his flaws. I don't think he's perfect, just that out of all available options he's consistently the best at these big movies. His movies have purpose, a message they're trying to get across, and the dialogue is (hardly) ever obtrusive. Most of all, the look of his films always feels real to me. I'm never taken out of the story by how fake something looks. He actually understands pacing, and the value of lingering with a shot. Quick cuts aren't all there is to editing an action movie.
I think out of all the Marvel franchise sequels that have hit in the last few years, this is the one I was most let down by. X1, X2 and First Class are in my top ten CBMs, so to have all of that history squandered is just disappointing. I don't understand why they had to reset everything. I'm not sure what Fox's plans are, but if they don't intend on revisiting the future timeline the openendedness of the ending (that's a mouthful) is perplexing. I also don't really care much about the original cast since they're practically new characters now because of the reset.
There are so many things that they did in this film that just leaves me scratching my head. I really wish that studios would be more hands off when it comes to these movies. Let the filmmakers do what they want; isn't that why they were hired in the first place? However, if this WAS Singer's & Kinberg's idea... I just don't understand why they did it.
Unlike TASM2, I actually am anticipating the sequel. I'm curious where they'll go from here. I just wonder what their plans are.
