Official Rulk Thread

Well, it's not the sum total of the worthiness enchantment, but it is a factor. Consider the Asgardian way of life: they were constantly at war with the giants, and they glorified their warriors who participated in that war. Would you want to be ruled by a guy who's going to waste time trying to sit down and come to some peaceful resolution with your mortal foes if you lived in that sort of society? Thor's got the perfect blend of nobility and kindness that would keep him from oppressing his own people but with a firm, aggressive streak that would tolerate no attacks from outside forces without retaliating. Odin did too, come to think of it. The ideal seems to be "rule justly and kindly but don't be a *****," basically.

I totally agree, but odin doesn't go out and constantly war with giants and such, he sends his armies and only involves himself with major strikes and threats. I would say, and this is only IMHO, that while odin prizes that warriors bloodlust in his people, for him and other gods it's less an aggressive thing and more about protecting his people. Now you can protect with maximum prejudice, and that's what odin does, but he himself doesn't go around spoiling for fights he just ends them when they're started definatively. In the same way blake would never throw the first punch but he'll man up quick and fearlessly when others are threatened. That, I believe, is the standard odin wants for asgardian gods, and that's why I think blake is the ideal of what odin considers worthy. I would equate this with something my dad used to say, "don't ever throw the first punch, but always throw the last".

I see it differently. Odin, to me, is the warrior-king of a warrior tribe. He may not fight much now, but that's largely because Thor and the Warriors Three are there to do the fighting now. Odin's absolutely proven himself in battle over the centuries before he came to power and probably for a century or two after he gained the throne and before Thor came of age. So, really, I see him as a warrior who rose to lead other warriors by proving his valor in combat, going back once again to the Asgardian custom of glorifying warriors above all others.

That's evident in other areas of Asgardian society, too. Look at the "commonfolk" who rose to prominence in the Asgardian court: Sif, the fiercest shieldmaiden in Asgard's ranks; Balder, a keen strategic mind and considered the most noble of the gods after Thor (obviously, this was before his parentage was revealed); the Warriors Three, highly effective warriors who are second only to the likes of Thor and Balder in prowess; and Brunnhilde, the most powerful of the Valkyrie. Beta Ray Bill is considered a son to Odin and a brother to Thor because he proved himself a warrior equal to Thor. Captain America earned Thor's respect because he's a phenomenal soldier, which is just another word for warrior to Thor.

So, with that mentality in mind, I see Odin as the king of a race of warriors who raised himself to prominence through his own might in battle. He's tempered Asgardian society to reflect other interests, much like he tempered Thor from a bloodthirsty brute into a noble defender of the weak, but at its core, Asgardian society still revolves around glorification of the warrior. That's where I get my interpretation of the worthiness enchantment for Mjolnir from.

Captain America, Eric Masterson, Beta Ray Bill, Odin, and Tiwaz have all picked up Mjolnir. .

You forgot 3 other Marvel characters to life Thors hammer.

Red Norvell,Dargo Ktor and Air-walker.

I left Red out because he wasn't actually worthy at first, he was a thug Odin duped into subbing for Thor so Thor would survive Ragnarok. Odin removed the enchantment for Red just as he did for Superman. I left Air-Walker out because he wasn't worthy either, he just exploited a loophole in Mjolnir's enchantment with his soulless android body. You got me on Dargo, though. I forgot about him.

Dargo was worthy. He was a prophesied bearer of Mjolnir who took it up in an alternate future after the gods had fallen and Mjolnir had been lost or something. I just forgot about him.

That's because every possible future is just a different universe in the multiverse... for some reason.

Remember Thor Corps? It was Dargo, Eric Masterson, and Beta Ray Bill (and eventually regular Thor).

It wasn't really that well written or anything but that didn't keep it from being awesome.

EDIT: Apparently Sto Vo Kor remembers. I missed that.

Yeah, but I can't wrap my head around stuff like "if the X-Men do this, 616 will resemble Rachel's universe exactly, but if they do that, 616 will resemble Bishop's."

You won't get any arguments out of me on that front. I was never a fan of the "30 billion characters from alternate futures come back in time and join the X-men" crap.

Yeah, I remember seeing it. I never read it, though.

Unless they changed it, he just does sometimes. That's multiple personality disorder for you. Unless they've gone back to the old Banner-in-the-day/Fixit-in-the-night thing.

So Banner just kinda randomly switches which Hulk he can turn into? So there's no reason for him not to turn into Professor Hulk other than writers not wanting to use him?

Yeah, basically. Banner's mind just seems to cycle through Hulks. Sometimes he's consistent, as with Planet Hulk and all his years of savage green-ness, other times it's a mixed bag, as with Jones' run.

Basically.

Marvel has been very lenient as far as that goes thru the years.

Edit: Agreed with Corp. Also, Jenkins run had him going from Savage, to the Gray Hulk at a moments notice.

Well, we need to see more Professor Hulk. He was my favorite. Smart dude with a mean temper.

I liked the professor, too. I liked him more when he was supposed to be a combination of Banner's personalities rather than just another personality, but I still like him.

Well if Loeb keep things up we might get to see Prof Hulk, maybe thats the direction Loeb is going, maybe thats why the Dumb Hulk came back instead oh WWHulk. So we get Dumb Hulk then the Gray Hulk who knows what we'll get next.

Also I think Banner changed to Joe Fixit simply cause he was in Vegas. He basically said so, he sai something like "I shouldn't have come here"
