MOVIE MARKET: Rave Review for 'Hairspray'; 'Transformers' May Break 6-Day Record of $183.6M; No Hits Among Cannes Competition Films; Plus, Compelling Trailer for 'The Brave One'
by Steve Mason.
Transformers will get a Monday night start
My sources at Dreamworks/Paramount tell me that Michael Bays
Transformers, which is locked and was shown for the first time last week, will not open on Wednesday, July 4 as planned. Instead, it will have Monday night screenings followed by a wide opening on Tuesday, July 3.
Some at the studio believe that, with
Spider-Man 3 (Sony) and
Shrek the Third (Dreamworks/Paramount) now likely finishing under $340M domestic, that
Transformers could wind up being the #1 box office of the summer and of the year.
The first review has leaked out from last weeks screening, and its from a guy writing under the name of
CardsFan34 who posted Aint It Cool News.
My favorite part is where CardsFan34 writes, The last 30 minutes is non-stop robot destruction I honestly couldnt tell you everything that happened because it was just so damn awesome I had a hard time keeping up. Thats some priceless fanboy raving.
As for the Monday night opening, I think it makes sense. Because the 4th of July is mid-week, there was no way for
Transformers to top
Spider-Man 3s $151M 3-day record.
When all is said and done, here are the records likely to fall:
All-Time Top Grossing Tuesday
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Mans Chest - $15.7M
All-Time Top Grossing Wednesday
Spider-Man 2 - $40.4M
The record to really follow is the 6-day record. Take the Monday night, 7/2 after midnight screenings and add them to Tuesday, 7/3 thru Sunday, 7/8, and
Transformers has a shot at surpassing last summers
Dead Mans Chest 6-day mark of $183.6M. Three of
Pirates 2s 6 opening days were normal weekdays. The sci fi flick starring Shia LaBeouf opens in a screwy week where Wednesday is the official holiday, but lots of people are taking Tuesday off and many will not be working Wednesday thru Sunday.
