We will find out that Kili is in fact adopted and is half elven already, anyway. That will be swell.

A self respecting Dwarf would have cast any dwarf/elven bastard child out into the cold to die. We arent so lucky. Maybe in the second movie the dwarves realize he is part elf and use him as a means of distracting smaug and he is incinerated in the process. One can dream anyways.

The goblins look great, but can someone explain to me why Bilbo has been subjected to sharing the foreground with Kili? Hell, Kili draws your attention more than Bilbo does.

The focus on Hot Dwarf in the promotional material is starting to piss me off, frankly.

Why? He is cute, why is it so forbidden for the ladies to have something once in a while?

No, that's one of the main baddie Orcs in the film. The Goblin King looks more like Jabba the Hutt.

I don't think Martin Freeman is that bad-looking of a fellow, not to mention the fact that these movies also have Orlando Bloom, Lee Pace, and Luke Evans. Couple them with Cate Blanchett and Evangeline Lilly as the strong female characters, and there are enough attractive people in these films without this added distraction. Sorry if that makes me a harping purist, but that's what it is to me. This is an adaptation of Tolkien's work, and this is as un-Tolkien as you can get (albeit from a purely visual perspective).

But let's say Jackson's hands were tied, and Heartthrob Dwarf was a studio mandate. Here is Aidan Turner at the Hobbit press conference in February 2011:

Is he really suddenly that unattractive with the beard? You've got women tripping over themselves at the sight of Chris Emsworth in Thor Mode, yet this would have been unnacceptable? I mean, really? Since when were full beards so frowned upon by the female population?

Granted, I'd still prefer a longer beard than this (nitpicker, I know), but as far as choosing between the lesser of two evils, that right there is a vast improvement over what we got. Leaps and bounds. Because at least that right there holds true to the text - in that all dwarves (male and female) have beards since birth.

He grows an epic beard out for the press conference, then shaves it off two weeks later to play a Tolkien dwarf. Talk about a cruel joke.

I believe the beard went out of style in the late 19th century.

That's only because all the hormones in our foods have turned men today into man/girls and we cant grow beards worth a damn.

But it doesnt matter when the beard went out of style. Dwarves are born with beards. Trimming or going for a style is one thing. Stubble is just strange for a dwarf.

The thing is, the more people start minorly nitckpicking over Kili the more people start to think it's a big legitimate problem with the film. It's how that Captain America chest hair debate started and many other petty criticism starts on SHH. It's kinda ridiculous.

They should give a Hobbit a beard. I mean, why the hell not.

Me too...sort of. I still don't understand why they are pink. They look like they belong to the same species as Gollum.

Fantastic. More power to get 14 year old girls into the theatre. Again, it's such a minor nitpick that if it's going to ruin someone's enjoyment of the movie than they have serious issues that they might need to figure out on their own.
No, we just take a movie discussion board for what it is: somewhere to discuss movies. It is futile and a bit dubious to call for the suppression of dissent from the movie in question's hype.

Well its a bit more than a costuming choice don't you think?
Yes, it is. It wouldn't be such an irritation if it didn't appear to feed into a needless romantic sub plot, to participate in which the Dwarflett has been made to look absurd.

Because its extremely obvious that that is exactly the only motivation for their choices. It comes off as a cheap and cynical marketing ploy. Its the same as when the force in scantilly clad women into things for no reason other than to make a few more bucks.

When it seems to be an obsession from the same voices for countless pages, it's not a discussion anymore. It becomes a stupid nitpick that 99% people going to see the movie won't give a crap about. As stupid as what eye color Harry Potter should have and hair on Captain America's chest (as mentioned before).

Kili doesn't really bother me. I don't get the complaint. He's a young dwarf... the youngest of the bunch.

I'm more bothered by Radagast's appearance in the film, to be honest. Why here, and not in the Lord of the Rings where he properly belongs? But I expect additions in these adaptions at this point, so it is a minor grumble.

I doubt it is an obsession for anyone. Kili just looks more dumb in each new poster or image. You are bound to see a new eruption of mockery with each instance. It will continue until the movie is released, at which point everyone will either have enjoyed it so much that their contempt for Kili will be a mere caveat, or they will have hated it so much that their contempt for Kili will be a mere caveat.

As it stands, it is a clear marketing choice to afford Kili such a central position in the promotional material. It follows that the marketeers must be hoping for a reaction. It is their fault alone if the reaction is other than they might have hoped.

It's more or less just a satirical thing at this point. I crack jokes about nitpicks all the time on here but I don't plan on suiciding myself if they don't change them in the film.

Actually, one thing does really bother me... the fact that in the trailer Bilbo suggests the Riddle game, whereas in all versions of the Hobbit text it has always been Gollum who suggested the game. I'm trying to figure out why they would change that detail and I can't think of a reason, so it is really driving me crazy.

I remember the same happening for Orlando Bloom's Legolas back in the LOTR days.
