From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first of a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien.

The three films tell a continuous story set in Middle-earth 60 years before The Lord of the Rings, which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar®-winning The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Good work! ...you bastard. :cmad:

But seriously, I'm staying faaaar away from those spoilers.

When is the soundtrack suppose to be released?

Nice I still have mine for LOTR. I will buy this day one and listen to it quite a bit I'm sure.

I just hope the release is decent. Watertower did a subpar job with the standard score releases for LOTR.

Time to update my Christmas list.

I'm kind of glad I didn't follow the development of this as microscopically as LOTR. Now it's only 6 weeks away!

17 new posters. Kili, you goddamn handsome dwarf. :argh:

Lol i can totally see Fili in that picture having just said "Ciao" the way eddie izzard does.

Gloin kinda scares me.

Why is galadrial giving me the middle finger?

And why does Ori always look mentally challnged?

I would want to hang out with these dwarves. Bet it would be a blast.

That is a lot of music for just the first film. Also pretty obvious where the film ends now.

I think Edward Furlong would have worked as one of the dwarves. Not Thorin, for godness sake, but some not-so-important. He's already short and fat, he possess enough acting talent to deliver a couple of lines, and he know some basic fighting skills. But he would have needed to learn how to handle a sword or an axe.

He would also have needed to learn how to stay off coke...

Shore's score is probably my most anticipated thing about the movie. His music for Rings was phenomenal and the most consistently brilliant thing about the series.

Fellowship has one one the greatest film soundtracks of the 21st century.

There are no words for how much I love Fellowship's soundtrack. One of my most listened to. All three soundtracks were great, but Fellowship's was phenominal.

The thing is, it consistently got worse as the series went on. Fellowship's score was utter perfection, TTT was pretty, pretty good but ROTK was mediocre. TTT at least kept some of the invention going on. Rohan has some great music. ROTK isn't really distinguishable from the other two films and doesn't add anything really. It is kind of ridiculous how good Fellowship's is, especially compared to ROTK.

Fellowship has one one the greatest film soundtracks of the 21st century.

It is in my top 5, alongside "The Empire Strikes Back", "Star Wars", "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly", and "Pride and Prejudice" (2005). It is excellent. "The Breaking of the Fellowship" is perfection as is the Moria reveal.

Are you sure its not just because the various motifs were already established by the time we got to RotK? I mean yeah Fellowship seems more distinctive from the other films, when we heard it, the other films weren't around yet.

Saw the new Hobbit trailer in 3D today, it looks impressive.

Nah, I don't think so. Having established motifs can only really help. John Williams has proven just that. Whatever you say about the prequels in terms of their quality, there is no doubting that John Williams brought what little weight there is in those films. He showed you can keep it fresh while using your established material.

John Williams work on Potter is actually a very good example of just this. He do to scheduling problems CoS didn't really get the treatment it deserved so even with the few new themes, it was pretty much more of the same. It is good, but it is miles behind the first film. Then PoA happened and using the established themes and crafting new music we might have got one of Williams best scores period.
