There are no other heavyweights in Strikeforce. ZUFFA will have to hire someone new from outside ZUFFA or send someone over maybe. I can't see any UFC fighters that want to go to Strikeforce even if it means fighting a top five guy like Cormier.
Cain Velasquez is the consensus #1 contender now. Sorry but that's the way it is. He was slated to fight Frank Mir and that was set to be a title eliminator fight. There is no other clear cut consensus contender that could dispute Cain's claim at the moment. Overeem is out and suspended and not coming back for a while. UFC needs to move on until then. I doubt Lesnar would get the nod. He got trounced by Cain and Overeem his last two fights. If Lesnar came in for 1 more fight I believe it would be the rubber match with Mir and I think that's the only fight Lesnar would agree to right now. And Mir has wanted that rematch for three years.
Stefan Struve is getting there but he's not ready. Werdum if he wins will be elevated but still IMHO not yet a contender. So Cain is the next best choice. He's the former champion and arguably still number 2 or 3 heavyweight fighter in the world. He's 10-1 overall, 8-1 in the UFC. Why shouldn't he get a title shot? Who else could get a shot at JDS right now?
