It's baffling. While Belfort's takedown defense is extremely questionable (to say the least), he does possess lightning fast hands with scary KO power.

Yet, when arriving to Sonnen... what type of threat did he present to Jones that he couldn't handle?

it is why i love sonnen dude just comes to fight he does'nt need some sort of game plan

people forget he foguht bisping on 1 weeks notice too and he went from trainign for a wrestler in munoz to a rangy kickboxer in a week's notice but he still took the fight

There's no reason to take the fight?

He's the UFC LHW Champion and he belongs to the UFC. So if The UFC tells him to fight Sonnen, then he better fight Sonnen. It doesn't matter if the match-up is 'stupid', he's still obligated as an employee to fight whoever the boss wants him to fight.

Did Shogun b***h about fighting Jones last minute? No. Did Silva refuse to fight Maia or Leites? No.

Nope. That's not how it works at all. You ever heard of a contract?

Maybe the reason why Jones gameplans is the reason why he's such a dominant champ now. Maybe that's the reason why he's already on pace to be the greatest light-heavyweight ever, and maybe the greatest fighter of all time. So what Chael fought Bisping on short notice. That's nice and all, but Jones is a champ while Chael is the one using his mouth to garner more attention to himself instead of holding a championship. Plus Jones still said he would fight Chael, so this ducking nonsense becomes silly since Dana won't put that fight together for Sept. 22.

Who gives a **** what Chael did anyway? He's had a really great run lately, but he's still suffered defeats for a major flaw in his game while Jones is turning himself into one of the greatest fighters of all time. When it comes to fighting is there more to ask than that? The guy has put in a lot of time and effort into being the best. It's not so unreasonable for him to want more time to prepare for a new opponent because what's got him so far is being smart with his career. Chael's been fighting for 15 years, and he's yet to win a major championship in MMA. Jones has been fighting for 4 years, became champ, and became the first man to successfully defend the light-heavyweight title more than once since Chuck in 2007. Not ****ting on Chael at all, but this Chael Boitano stuff is hilarious. What would Chael Boitano do if he were in Jon Jones' position? Chael's never had to defend a title, so it's a totally different matter than when he fought Bisping.

^how about when anderson did'nt turn down maia fight on 2 months notice when belfort got hurt even tho maia had recently been ktfo by nate marquardt but he did so to save ufc 112 ppv?

because he is a company man and helped the ufc out

And what makes you think you know about Zuffa's contracts? From the tad bit we do know, the contracts are quite constricting, especially as a champion.

E-Man, you can justify and be an apologist to Jon's actions all you want. Point is Jones refused the fight. In street slang:

"Jones p*ssied out."

This ain't the comics. You can't always get prep time.

I think it has more to do that he's a giant fighting at LHW. Longest reach in the UFC, etc. Fedor recently ran into this problem. The size differences really do matter at this level of MMA.

That makes even more sense for JBJ to just go out there, and be the hero he claims to be. AND he can take a much easier fight for a much bigger paycheck in the process. He did recently declare he's all about getting payed.

No it isnt. I agree that Chael is trying to talk his way into a title shot that he doesnt deserve, but on the other hand...who else stepped up? It doesnt matter in the end because Bones said no to ANYONE at 151. I heard Ken Shamrock even wanted the shot...something about beating him into a living death...

and why the hell are there no 205ers who can fight Jones in a month?

actually chris weidman said he would fight jones too he said he told dana and the ufc

guessing jones ditched that fight too lol

I agree with that middle part. This whole debacle reminds me of the first season of the ultimate fighter when dana flipped out calling everyone out about not wanting to fight.

That's very similar to when Jon Jones fought Shogun on 6 weeks short notice. Kinda similar to what he's doing now. He's taking 30 days short notice over 8 days. That's the difference. He said he wants more time.

E-Man, you can justify and be an apologist to Jon's actions all you want. Point is Jones refused the fight. In street slang:

It's not about being an apologist. I've stated that I think he should have taken the fight, but he's not being a ***** because he'd rather have more time. And the funny thing is that you can get prep time because Jon Jones is getting more right now. He's a professional athlete. He's not some Mortal Kombat fighter that has to fight up a mountain to get to Shao Kahn. This is his career, and since he wanted more time it's what he's getting because it's a sport and not some street fight. Plus he said that he'd fight Chael, but Dana is the one refusing that now for ******** reasons.

And what makes you think you know about Zuffa's contracts? From the tad bit we do know, the contracts are quite constricting, especially as a champion.

Because if it really did work the way you want it to work, Jones would be in breach of said contract and would be facing some type of penalty right now. He's not, unless you consider bad press a penalty under a contract.

Fighter contracts are written on toilet paper, it's why the UFC cuts fighters left and right like it's all good. I'm only assuming that while yes, Jones is a UFC "employee" his contract was to fight Henderson on August 25th. Once that fight was not able to go, he was under no obligation to fight anyone else, contractually and legally that is. Morally, you can do that song and dance all day if you want. Again, if the UFC worked the way you say it does, Jones would be paying some sort of fine or penalty for breaching his employment contract. Pretty simple actually.

Ditto. I think Jones haters are gonna hate him regardless of what he does. If he'd taken the fight, you'd still see posts like this

"What an *******. If Jones was a real champ he'd have gotten in the ambulance & rode to the hospital w/Sonnen. **** Jones. He's a bully. Chael ain't even a real LHW. Jones didn't even give him a chance. He didn't have to beat him up like that. He's a real big man when he's beating up on someone half his size. If he was a real man he woulda turned the fight down but noooooo, ol' ***** ass Jones just gotta pad his resume"

Do I wish he'd taken the fight? Yes. Do I think he could have beaten Fail w/8 days notice? Hell yes. Fail's nowhere near being a threat to Jones. Jones could beat him like a ****ing pinata w/8 MINUTES notice. Am I getting more & more tired of Greg Jackson since that "strategy" he came up w/for Guida? Yes. Do I think Jones is a bad person for not taking the fight? NO. Fail takes fights on short notice because his gameplan is the same every fight. Wrestle & win by boring decision. He didn't even beat Bisping IMO anyway. Fail had nothing to lose & Jones had nothing to gain. As said b4, the card should have been better in the 1st place.

You can't predict what people are going to say. The point is, he didn't take the fight. People used to conquer countries and continents in 29 days. Nowadays, people can't even take an MMA fight on 29 days notice. I admit, I've never liked Jones, so my opinion is most likely biased against him. He can't be called the greatest now. People will look back and say, "Well, he refused to fight Sonnen, remember? The real greatest fighter was the guy that called in to fight, in Anderson Silva." Jones can go ahead and be about the business. He doesn't have the spirit of a true fighter. You have to sacrifice to be the best. You have to do things that are unexpected.

Give me a ****ing break.:whatever:

he was never close to be a GOAT anderson holds that till he loses

anyway at the end of the day ufc created him into a star gave him a title shot when his best win was bader promote the hell out of him and even helped him with laywers and supported him during his dui case

and all they asked was 1 favor to help them out with a card he was suppose to fight on anyways and was healthy with a full training camp and he basically gave them a big FU

he bit the hand the feeds him

I don't think it was much to ask for him to fight a new opponent on 8 days notice considering they sponsored him before and also supported him through his whole DUI ordeal.

Is it is a risk? Yes but I don't see how the risk is any less than any other fight. The risk was arguably greater fighting the likes of Machida and Evans. Anything can happen in any fight. There will always be a risk as this is unscripted fighting.

Yes, this is a professional sport, but nothing is predictable and goes according to plan... ever. That goes for all worldwide sports. Will The Patriots cancel and/or reschedule a regular season or playoff game simply because Tom Brady gets injuried? No. The show goes on.

Fighters take fights on short notice all the time, and Jones shouldn't be the exception. All Jon accomplished here by refusing to fight Sonnen, yet strangely accepting a fight with Belfort, is appear insecure in front of millions of MMA fans.

Saying and doing are two different things, E-Man. If he really wanted to fight Sonnen to prove his superiority, dominance and resourcefulness as a champion, and finally shut Chael up like Silva did, then Jon would have agreed to the fight him in an instant.

Cold Hard Fact: He didn't, and it looks bad. Really bad. It looks worse now that he chose a fading middleweight fighter instead.

Probably the worst analogy I've seen.

would'nt call vitor a fading star dude is 7-1 in last 8 and only loss is to anderson

Ummm, and what makes you think Jones won't be paying a 'penalty' for refusing to help out his boss and company [after his boss and company stood by him]? From what fighters say about Dana White, he's not a very friendly and forgiving individual (initially at first) when you don't work with him. He'll make you pay for the mistakes you've done.

Now, whatever Jon's punishment will be, one thing is for damn sure it's going to sting.

Because we would have heard about it already. Dana White isn't really the most private of people. And by penalty I mean a fine or something even to the extent of taking his title away for not fighting. Fact is, contractually Jon Jones is probably not obligated to fight anyone other than the person who he agreed to fight to. At most, he loses out on the money for the fight.

Lets put it this way, if there was a contract and it said Jon Jones had to fight whoever the **** Dana White wanted, Jon Jones would have been fighting on Saturday. He wasn't, therefore it's not outside the realm of possibility he will face no penalty for refusing to fight a replacement.

As for Dana White making his punishment sting? Yeah that's why he's letting him fight Belfort next month. Ooooh Dana White, don't hurt 'em. :whatever:

Nope, not really.

If your opponent is injuried, boo-hoo. You still gotta go out there and earn your paycheck.

Except football is a team sport and that's why they have back up quarterbacks. Again, terrible analogy not even close to the same situation.

Yeah, but he's fought Martin, Lindland, Serati, Zikic and Akiyama -- four of which are cans and/or below average caliber opponents.

He got a quality win over Johnson but I don't see him hanging with the top dogs much longer at 35. Belfort is going to get picked apart and sacrificed next month.
