Comics Official X-Men Convention News thread

Magneto set his mind on protecting his race by wanting to off the other race, that's the most different thing between him and Scott. I'd want to join my people during a crisis, but not join Nazi because some powershot thinks my people should be on top.

As for Vanisher, I've already voiced my opinion about him. That guy is, or was a selfish coward, the best way to get him to cooperate in something which isn't for his own benefit is fear, I don't believe in one second that had he refused to join, the X-Force'd really kill him, even Wolverine wouldn't do it.

All the team has killed so far are real bad guys, Vanisher was only a meannie, not even a real threat, and a mutant of the last 200, he was basically 'tricked' into joining in my opinion.

Its not an issue of Scott vs Magneto. I just thought it was ridiculous of them to make it an issue of Mags being jealous or envious of Scott for leading the mutant race when that really isnt impressive considering there is less than 200 around (and not all of them are even on that island and following Scott). Magneto has led ALOT more mutants than that so its pretty ridiculous to make it an issue. Less than 200 vs Millions. The 2 situations dont eve compare

Would they have ctually killed him? Probably not but they used that threat to force him on the team and that was wrong no matter how you slice it. So what if the guy is a selfish coward? X-force should never have told him that either he help them or he dies. Why did they and Scott feel that he owed them anything and that he should be compelled to follow their orders? He was pretty much a slave and what they did with him is similar to the Weapon X program and its soldiers

All the team has killed so far are real bad guys, Vanisher was only a meannie, not even a real threat, and a mutant of the last 200, he was basically 'tricked' into joining in my opinion.
Tricked, forced, threatened...same difference. Those that the team has killed has bene questionable. What equals real bad guys? Simply someone that opposes the X-men. Look at that person they killed in Second Coming. It was a mere foot solider and the bottom of the totem pole. Not a threat at all and only a minion following orders from those above him. There was absolutely no need to kill that guy as he didnt warrant murder. X-force wasnt justified in that and Im glad Kurt called them on it

Magneto likes powers, he was the type who wanted to be on top of his own race, it's not jealousy, more like his nature imo.

There can never be too much deception in war. If you need someone to help you out, if the person likes money you give him money, if he values his life the most then...

Soldiers being killed on battle field is part of the deal, they should have prepared for it when signing on the contract, he wasn't murdered, it's war, it's reality. The X-Men must have killed more than one or two who were more innocent than that soldier, considering how powerful they and their enemies are.

The X-men have killed before when necesary, usually in self defense or when there literally are no other options. There was absolutely nothing necesary about killing that soldier. He wouldnt give them the info that they demanded, so that means he deserves to have metal claws jammed into his skull? That was murder especially considering it was not self defense and there were other options. That was an evil action no matter how one tries to rationalize. Its not like this guy was Bastion and in that moment trying to murder them. They had him down, cornered and had the upper hand. They did not need to kill

As the inaugural Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo began to wind down Sunday afternoon, Marvel's X-Men panel was in full swing.

On hand for the panel were Marjorie Liu, "Dark Wolverine" artist Cammo (Giuseppe Camuncoli), Peter David, editor Jenine Schaefer, and moderator Arune Singh.

Whilce Portacio will be the new artist on "Uncanny X-Men" beginning in July, Singh announced. Leonard Kirk will be the new artist on "New Mutants," while Chris Claremont and Milo Manara's "X-Women" one shot will also ship in July and Claremont's "New Mutants Forever" begins in August.

"Mutants vs. Vampires" begins in a new "X-Men" #1 by Victor Gischler and Paco Medina.

"Wolverine: Weapon X" will be ending, with a new "Wolverine" #1 by Jason Aaron and Renato Guedes, with covers by Jae Lee shipping in September. In it, Wolverine goes to Hell. "His soul goes to hell, andwWe're going to see what happens when he's not around to be in control of his own body," Schaefer said.

"Dark Wolverine" will become "Daken: Dark Wolverine" in September, with Liu, Daniel Way, and Giuseppe Camuncoli returning. "The key words are intrigue, violence, exploitation, sex—more of the same."

An X-23 series begins in September, written by Liu with an artist to be named later. "She's basically on a journey of self discovery. It's going to be very dark, intense book, but hopefully along the way there will be a ray of light that she'll be able to find her place in the world," Liu said.

"X-Force" will end after Second Coming, to be relaunched in October with Rick Remender and Jerome Opeña. "When Wolverine is put in charge of X-Force, it's a totally different team than Cyclops would put together," Schaefer said. "They're going to be taking on Apocalypse."

David then spoke about "X-Factor." "People have been asking why we've taken X-Factor in the direction we have," David said. "The long-time Marvel fans will remember that any time anybody got into a cab in New York City, Mark Spector Moon Knight would be driving it." He's trying to restore that feel by making X-Factor the go-to detective agency of the Marvel U. "If you're a super-villain and you suspect your wife is cheating on you, you go to X-Factor--especially if you think she's cheating with another super-villain." X-Factor will take the case if you can pay the bill, David said.

"When 'X-Factor' #207 comes out, fans are going to go nuts," he continued. "The last page will get us as much attention, if not more, than since Madrox ate his baby."

Singh said that, following "Second Coming," the X-Men will be much more integrated into the Marvel Universe, which will explain why Spider-Man, She-Hulk and others are in the X-Men promotional images.

Singh then turned the floor over to questions. Throughout the session, though the panelists had to hedge answers because they might reveal the events of "Second Coming."

"X-Men Legacy" will continue with Mike Carey despite other changes to the line, Singh confirmed in response to the first question.

A fan asked whether the X-Men would return to being a metaphor for civil rights issues, with Schaefer saying that there would be a degree of this in Matt Fraction's "Uncanny," which she said already had this underlying tone.

"After M-Day, there were only 198 mutants, and that number has been slowly dwindling," Schaefer said. "Every time a mutant dies, that's like two million people."

David contended that the X-Men have not got away from the civil rights concept, with the mutants being threatened from within or without, noting that, "now they're essentially living in a ghetto." "We couldn't have done that when there were two million of them. Now we can explore the ghettoization of an entire culture."

Singh said there is something coming up in "Second Coming" that will "make you very happy."

The Wolverine in hell story will take place before the events of the new "X-Force," although their publishing schedules overlap. "It will all fit in," Singh said of the continuity.

The next question asked when Layla Miller would "get back to making out with Jamie Madrox." David said she would be re-joining the team with "Second Coming" and "sticking around for a while." The early dynamic of "everybody but Madrox saying, 'what is she doing here?'" will return, thanks to her year with Doctor Doom. "In the real world, when someone doesn't trust you, you do everything you can to earn their trust—Layla doesn't give a crap," David said. "As to whether she'll be making out with Jamie: yes."

"Second Coming" will address Hope's story and origins, Schaefer confirmed in response to a question.

"I can't tell you anything about 'X-Force' and I can't tell you anything about Nightcrawler, but I can tell you he has a huge role in 'Second Coming,'" Singh said when asked about the character's fate.

Asked about the hint that Madrox was not a mutant, David said that the line was actually "You have no idea what you are." David explained his thought was that there are a second evolutionary branch of mutants who don't follow the pattern of gaining powers at adolescence. David said he would touch on this at some point.

A fan said he was worried about the return of "shallow" '90s stories, given the character selection of the new X-books. Schaefer said that what's happening in the X-books is very organic, while David said that writers choose characters because they think there's a story to tell. "I brought Shatterstar back because I wanted to give Rictor something to do," David said, to applause and laughs.

The beginnings of a question about Daken's hook-ups and the romance between Rictor and Shatterstar was interrupted by David, who said, "No, Rictor will not be making out with Daken." "I wish Nick Lowe, editor on 'Uncanny' was here, because he totally wants more kissing," Schaeffer added.

A fan thanked David for the Rictor/Shatterstar love story. "I've got letters from people saying they literally broke down in tears of joy at seeing those characters together," David said. He noted that other writers have laid the subtext, but "it's the 21st century--it doesn't have to be subtext anymore." He added that, "Maybe I was being naive, but I really didn't think it was that big of a deal—it was panel 5 of a six-panel page."

He wound up by saying, "under my watch, I am never going to kill off Rictor or Shatterstar. Will it be a smooth road? Hell no!" David also said he would not say whether they would ultimately stay together. The fan was applauded for his comment, and David for his response.

Asked about the Juggernaut's status as a hero or villain, Singh said the character would play a huge role in "Thunderbolts," the Jeff Parker-written book that will feature Luke Cage reforming villains starting in May.

Regarding the visual differences between Logan and Daken, Cammo said, "Logan is raw; Daken is more seductive, which also affects how he fights."

"We trust Cammo; his instincts are superb," Liu said.

Liue said "Daken" was a series about "a man who wants to rule the world." "He has a big ego, which is part of why he thinks he deserves all this power. But a lot of it is also insecurity," she added.

So...I'm the one that's going to have to bring up the observation noted by a few of us SHHSkypers?

Cyclops Penis.

dang that is a very unflattering picture for scott. haha

and dang its not looking good for Jubilee.

What is the deal with the cover with everyone having fangs? Is one of the artists some kind of secret Twilight fan?

The X-Men are about to fight some vampires soon. That's a variant cover to promote the storyline.

And don't make any stupid "Oh no, the X-Men are turning into Twilight" jokes. You know good and well that Marvel's vampires are more traditional than that.

CBR's coverage of Comic-Con International in San Diego entered Day 2 with the Friday morning Marvel X-Men panel. Arune Singh, Axel Alonso, Nick Lowe, Rick Remender, Kieron Gillen, Matt Fraction, Marjorie Liu, Daniel Way, Peter David,Victor Gischler, Chris Yost, and Craig Kyle were on hand to announce new titles and discuss all things mutant, with a strange focus on Cyclops' anatomy.

"You're going to see a lot more of the Marvel universe interacting with the X-Men over the next few months and years," editor Nick Lowe said.

"Do the X-Men ever get a welcome to the bright shiny new age without having to go to a little bit of trouble?" Victor Gischler joked, referring to "Curse of the Mutants'" role in the "Heroic Age" banner.

Way said that "Wolverine," "Daken," and "X-23" would form something of a "Wolverine Universe." The Logan goes to hell story in Jason Aaron's "Wolverine" would affect the other two books, Alonso added. "It's not a crossover, but they do conect."

"Wolverine: The Best There is" launches in December, written by Charlie Huston with art by Juan Jose Ryp. "It goes directly into Logan's future, without looking at his past," Alonso said, referring to the number of stories already existing dealing with Wolverine's past.

Remender's "Uncanny X-Force" will begin by resurrecting Apocalypse, which "obviously has ramifications to a number of characters, notably Warren [Worthington, Angel/Archangel]."

"With 'Second Coming' over, Scott [Summers] is no longer a wartime president," Alonso added, but Logan still sees a need for the team and Cyclops doesn't need to know.

In January, the X-Men will begin teaming up with other superheroes in Gischler's series, Alonso announced. "The X-Men are always under siege--why don't they rescue cats in trees, or stop the Rhino when he's rampaging around?"

Singh then showed another "Who is the new Man without Fear?" trailer, this time featuring Gambit.

"Generation Hope" will begin in November, in which Hope will "seize her destiny by the throat." It spins out of "Uncanny" and is written by Kieron Gillen. "There haven't been new mutants in a long time, and it's no longer an easy thing," Gillen said. Next week's "Uncanny" #526 would begin the build-up to the new series, Matt Fraction added.

"In reading the first couple issues, I think it's going to be a lot like 'New Mutants' when it first started," Lowe said of the series.

"It was funny in the old days that new mutants would show up with costumes," Fraction joked. "'I not only have powers, but this is what I do in my spare time!'"

Marco Djurdjevic's X-Men poster will be dividing into covers of the X-titles over the next several months.

Singh then opened the floor to questions.

The first question was, "Who decided to kill Nightcrawler?" "Bastion," Craig Kyle offered. Alonso said it was a natural and necessary story beat, adding "the buck stops with me." He then joked, "because we don't care about the fans," to general laughter.

Next, a woman said, "Matt Fraction, thanks for giving Cyclops his balls back." "Wait'll you see the action figure!" Fraction joked. Peter David added, "We're going to kill Cyclops' balls." The fan's question, though, was, when will Havok return from space? Lowe said, "He will return, but I can't tell you when. Then we'll kill him in the next issue."

Lowe said that there would be at least several arcs before the next X-crossover, in response to a question.

A fan from San Francisco said he enjoyed the focus, but "have any of you ever been to San Francisco?" "Motherf***** I'm from San Francisco!" Alonso said, again to laughter. The fan replied, "it's not that sunny!"

Another fan asked about Ruby Summers, an "X-Factor" character in a dark future. "The obvious thing to do would be to bring her to the present, because what we really need is more Summers children in the present," David joked. He added that there are no plans for her just now, but if she returns it will likely be in a future-based story.

Clues as to Sabretooth's status can be found in "Wolverine" #1, Lowe and Singh said. David joked that there would be a limited-edition statue of Sabretooth's head and Cyclops' balls.

"How do you decide who you're going to disfigure, how you're going to disfigure them, and who you're going to kill?" a fan asked. "We don't target characters and say, what story can we tell to utterly annihilated them," David said. "Killing Nightcrawler means we don't get to write him," the writer added by way of showing that such deaths upset creators as well. "We like writing him."

Alonso added that, in putting together "Second Coming," "we knew there was a high probability Cable would not make it out alive," simply because a sacrifice was needed and it made sense for the story. "When we talked about the architecture of how Cable died, there wasn't a dry eye in the house—I deflected by looking to Jason Aaron and saying, 'You're crying, b!+{#!' Because I didn't want anybody to see I was crying," Alonso said.

After some more back and forth, Alonso joked, "And as you know, when you're dead in Marvel, you're dead! You're never coming back!"

As to whether Rogue and Gambit would get back together, Lowe said, "We've seen a lot of Rogue and Gambit together in the past. You might want to look to other suitors."

David joked, "I want to see Rogue get together with a vampire, just to confuse the 'True Blood' fans."

Kyle confirmed that he and Yost would be taking a break from the X-books after "X-Force: Sex and Violence." "I'll be working on the Thor film, so if I don't do a good job there I won't be doing any Marvel books." Yost, too, will be working on features and animation.

Lowe said that "New Mutants" is "about to go into a brutal arc—so I hope nobody likes those characters." He added that it would payoff story elements that have been building since the first issues, especially things related to Illyana.

The Children of the Vault will return in "X-Men Legacy" in an arc where Rogue takes several of the young X-Men characters to India, Lowe continued.

David said he would not "blow up the status quo" any more in "X-Factor," but would see Longshot in Las Vegas and Rahne Sinclair coming onto the team, "and how that affects the Rictor/Shatterstar

Fraction discussed the "five lights" that appeared at the end of Second Coming. "These are very different mutants than we've ever seen before, there's something about how they developed as powered mutants that we haven't seen before," Fraction said. "They're people who were completely normal, and woke up one morning with their bodies violently transformed into something they don't understand. The next Uncanny arc is about Hope and these lights."
Friday July 23, 2010 10:13

"She sees herself as just a normal person," Lowe says of Hope. "The expectations, and how you would ever live up these things, is one of the key themes. I think it's going to be a lot like New Mutants when it first started, and Generation X. New characters that fans can get into from the ground level."
Friday July 23, 2010 10:15
10:16

And with that, questions from the audience!
Friday July 23, 2010 10:18
10:19

First up: "Who decided to kill Nightcrawler?" Alonso: "The buck sort of ends with me because I'm group editor, but at least year's X-Men summit because we were planning Second Coming, it was a natural beat in that story. Someone needed to sacrifice themselves. Nightcrawler ended up being the candidate. We're all responsible, but maybe me a little bit more."
Friday July 23, 2010 10:19
10:20

The fan said "Given the Heroic Age, I don't know why you would kill that character." Alonso joked: "Because we don't care about the fans." David: "I can't wait to see that headline on Newsarama."
Friday July 23, 2010 10:20
10:21

Is Havok ever going to come back from space? Lowe: "Yes, but I can't tell you when, because we want to surprise people." The fan: "But he is going to come back eventually, right?" "Of course, and then we're going to kill him the next day," Lowe joked.
Friday July 23, 2010 10:21
10:23

"Do you think we could make take a break from all the crossovers?" Alonso: "I think if you take a look, Uncanny functions as X-Men central. We choose our events carefully. We've only really had three — Messiah Complex, Messiah War and Second Coming."
Friday July 23, 2010 10:23
10:23

Lowe says that post-Second Coming, there's no crossing over between the books for at least a couple of arc. "We do crossovers and then we take breaks," he says. "That's X-Men."
Friday July 23, 2010 10:23
10:25

Fan: "Have you guys ever seen San Francisco? It is not that sunny!" Alonso: "I am from San Francisco, mother*****er!"
Friday July 23, 2010 10:25
10:26

Next question concerned Emma Frost's relationship with Hope. Fraction: "Have you ever seen a kid around a piranha? I'll leave it to you to decide which one is the child and which one is the predator," hinting further that their relationship might develop into something "catastrophic."
Friday July 23, 2010 10:26
10:26

And plans for Ruby Summers? David says no immediate ones, and that it's "so freaking obvious" to bring her to the present day, and "we're not so into doing 'obvious' in X-Factor.'"
Friday July 23, 2010 10:26
10:27

Fan in a Deadpool costume asks why the character is on Uncanny X-Force. Remender says Warren "wants him on the payroll," and there are both "logical and illogical" reasons for Deadpool to be on the team.
Friday July 23, 2010 10:27
10:28

Alonso to the fan, who has "Headpool" with him: "If you were a true Deadpool fan, you would have brought Dogpool."
Friday July 23, 2010 10:28
10:29

Someone who identified as a "Sabretooth fan" asked why he wasn't in Necrosha. "If you're interested in all things Wolverine/Sabretooth, I would read Jason Aaron's Wolverine, for clues on where you might see Sabretooth next," Singh said.
Friday July 23, 2010 10:29
10:29

Return of Bishop? Lowe: "Not in the immediate, immediate future. He's got some issues to work through He needs to talk out and hug out some things." Alonso: "We need to see what the next hairstyle is before we bring him back." Fraction suggested a Kid 'n' Play-style fade.
Friday July 23, 2010 10:29
10:31

Fan asks how you decide "who are you going to disfigure, and who are you going to kill" in the crossovers, and who they wanted to kill that they couldn't. David: "We don't really target characters and say, 'let's come up with a story to annihilate them."
Friday July 23, 2010 10:31
10:32

David says they're fans of the characters too, so it's upsetting to them to not get a chance to write someone like Nightcrawler again. Alonso says it just made "narrative sense" for Cable to die at the end of Second Coming.
Friday July 23, 2010 10:32
10:33

Alonso said that at one point during the planning of Cable's death scene, "there wasn't a dry eye in the house." Fraction: "Everybody's dad issues came bubbling up."
Friday July 23, 2010 10:33
10:34

Alonso summed up the discussion by quipping, "And as you know with Marvel, once someone dies, that's it! No one ever comes back! How do you come back from the dead?"
Friday July 23, 2010 10:34
10:35

"We've seen a lot of Rogue and Gambit in the past," Lowe said to a fan who asked about their relationship. "That's what people would expect. You might want to look at other suitors."
Friday July 23, 2010 10:35
10:36

David: "I would like to see her with a vampire, just to confuse all the True Blood fans."
Friday July 23, 2010 10:36
10:37

Are Kyle and Yost going to be doing more X-books? Kyle says they're going to be taking a "little break," since he's working on the Thor film, and Yost has also moved to the features writing program. Kyle says it's just a "little break" as they work on their day jobs. Yost: "The minute we get a chance to come back, we'll come back."
Friday July 23, 2010 10:37
10:38

Lowe says "New Mutants is coming into a brutal arc right now, so I hope no one is a fan of those characters. The whole series has been leading to this arc, up to page four of issue #1."

Left is a Generation Hope character and the right is possibly Hellion?

Bc thats how Djurdjevic likes it. He drew Emma throughout Second Coming in her classic Hellfire Club attire

I just put that up to artists drawing characters how they best remember them. Like how Charles is drawn in a wheelchair.

I so love the possibility of this

Me too. Havok and Polaris will make up for Deadpool being in it. :woot:

Actually, just replace Deadpool and Fantomex with Domino and Gambit and that would be the coolest team ever.

I also like seing Iceman and Dazzler on the poster. I hope they're a part of the team in X-Men. It's about time they got some of the spotlight.

Am I the only one anxious to see the new team but sad to see the old one go? It will be weird not seeing Domino on Wolvie's team..1 chick in a den of dangerous dudes? They need another girl I'm not counting Laura because she seams asexual not a love interest for any guy on there.

I hope Warpath is not lost in some off panel limbo and some small part of me hopes to see a story where Elixer might have gone after Vanisher to save him. Telford was a funny character when put w Foley.Originally he looked a little older which is interesting because other than Mags and Charles there are no x men in their late 40's. I mean dude was old back when he fought the original 5 (or mayb it was just premature balding)...

Singh then showed another "Who is the new Man without Fear?" trailer, this time featuring Gambit.
I'm really not in the loop on the whole "New Man Without Fear" campaign, but it's funny watching Daredevil fans panic over the thought of Gambit assuming that title. Don't know what it's about at all, but I can't imagine Gambit being involved in a non-XTeam venture, so I doubt the character's ties to it are serious.

As to whether Rogue and Gambit would get back together, Lowe said, "We've seen a lot of Rogue and Gambit together in the past. You might want to look to other suitors."

Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. I hope they're telling the truth here. :woot::woot::woot:

Deadpool'd be too much of a cash cow not to be involved...

Though I'd agree it'd be a set up where Gambit could regain some footing. The character has some sort of history with just about everyone pictured... but not so much that he'd be the ridiculous outcast he is with the current leaders of the X-Universe.

Sadly, though, the writers keep saying he's sticking in X-Men: Legacy. Which means once every six months he'll get a panel or two where he debates his dark side and mopes. Great...

I don't know if the other X-Writers hate him, or it's just Carey claiming that he's got some idea for Gambit that never comes to fruition.
