Comics Official X-Men Convention News thread

Deadpool'd be too much of a cash cow not to be involved...

Though I'd agree it'd be a set up where Gambit could regain some footing. The character has some sort of history with just about everyone pictured... but not so much that he'd be the ridiculous outcast he is with the current leaders of the X-Universe.

Sadly, though, the writers keep saying he's sticking in X-Men: Legacy. Which means once every six months he'll get a panel or two where he debates his dark side and mopes. Great...

I don't know if the other X-Writers hate him, or it's just Carey claiming that he's got some idea for Gambit that never comes to fruition.

I think it's the latter as Gishler has stated that he's been trying to get him on the "X-men" core team so i'm leaning towards Carey hording him to himself where he will use him every 6 months where he can portray him moping after Rogue

Sigh. :csad:

I wish he'd just let the character go. I'm sure he does have SOME kind of story in mind for Gambit... but he's so uber-focused on Rogue that I can't see him ever getting Gambit panel time unless it's to, you know, play up Rogue even more.

I'm assuming Carey would want Gambit under lock and key because he wants to be able to continue his weird trip down the Gambit/Death path... but, as previously stated, he's so head over heels for Rogue that it'll legitimately be 6 months before he ever even thinks about getting down to bringing Gambit back through the book.

Seriously if Gambit dosen't get a place on the "X-men" core team he will be royally screwed.

At least they included Gambit in the whole "the new man without fear" teasers, it was sure to bolstor his profile up a bit

The whole "New Man Without Fear" thing has kind of been a :huh::huh: moment for me as a Gambit fan. My best guess is that they wanted to have a mutant in the 'mix' for the role too, and someone said "Hey, Gambit's never up to anything, plus his fan base is small but rabid."

Though I suppose to be fair... the Cajun has slowly started showing up in more and more Marvel promo materials the last few months, and has that little mini-adventure with Storm coming up soon. So there might be some light at the end of the tunnel. I'm just normally so pessimistic.

I wouldn't say his fanbase is small he's still pretty big for many reasons, i mean he was the 2nd biggest X-men of the 90s, his message board was the most posted and viewed in the Marvel forums, he was in the latest Wolverine movie, he has an official fan web site, and that latest mini series was basically centered around him, it's just that in the last 5 years he has been stagnent with no one wanting to touch his death persona and Carey hording it to himself

The other X-Force book did really well without him.

I just think that the lineup of Wolverine, Archangel, Psylocke, Gambit, Domino, Havok and Polaris would be awesome.

I don't disagree that Gambit WAS an enormously popular character (hey, I'm a fan myself)... but he hasn't been on that level in quite some time. There are plenty of us Gambit fans out there, but he's not the heavy hitter with mass appeal anymore.

And while I despise what Carey's done to the character, I wouldn't blame the last five years on him... There was quite a stretch there where most X-Office writers admittedly wanted nothing to do with Gambit, so he either went off to limbo or just sat around in the background.

Well that lineup would be just fine, being that it's spearheaded by Marvel's ultimate cash cow (Wolverine). I was just pointing out that Deadpool would have been the money character among those pictured in the image at hand.

But would I read that? Without a shadow of a doubt... Even more so sans Wolvie.

I didn't know you were just referring to that picture. When you put it that way, you're right. :yay:

Even tho I'm sure their space adventure was hardcore I don't see Havok or crazy Lorna killing without hesitation-
Just hope they don't slow down the momentum........

I agree that he isn't as big as he was in the 90s (mostly because the writers randomly stopped using him), but i still think he has as much (if not more) as much popularity as characters on current rosters like Collosus, Psylocke, Rogue, Cyclops and Pixe for example.

Getting their slate of news and fan interaction well underway, Marvel Comics landed at 2010's New York Comic Con with an eye on whipping up some Uncanny X-Citement at their X-Menpanel today, and CBR News was on hand LIVE! for a massive amount of news, teases and fan Q&A presented below.

Marvel Sales Manager Arune Singh MC'd the event along with editors Axel Alonso and Jeannie Schaefer who were flanked by writers Marjorie Liu, Jason Aaron, Rick Remender, Kieron Gillen and Mike Carey as well as Marvel Talent Manager C.B. Cebulski.

Peter David arrived to declare "Whoever put Artist's Alley at the opposite end of the building from the panels should die!" to laughter from the audience.

Gillen spoke on the plans for "Uncanny X-Men" saying that if "Second Coming" was a monument to destroying mutants, the incoming arc will focus on other ways the mutant race can be attacked.

The panel announced a "Wolverine & Jubilee" mini series by Kathyrn Immonen and Phil Noto. Schaefer spoke on the series, saying, "Jubilee is going to be coming out of the vampire invasion a little changed, and her relationship with Wolverine will be changed as well." She called the series "The 'Batman & Robin' of the X-Men."

Alonso offered up hints as to the future of "X-Men" with the new "Serve & Protect" arc, which sees the team return to New York. "They travel back East to deal with a problem that only Spider-Man can help them solve," he said, noting that just as Blade featured heavily in the first arc, the second will feature Spidey as a way to show how the X-Men are becoming more connected to the Marvel U in the ramp up to a big story coming in a year or so. Chris Bachalo will join series writer Victor Gischler on the arc.

Gillen then spoke on the upcoming "Generation Hope" saying the story will pick up off the "Fight Lights" story, explaining what could possibly go wrong in Tokyo as fans get to know the new, young mutant characters of the Marvel U.

X-23 coming up will team the she-clone of Wolverine with Gambit as she finds her own place in the Marvel U, Liu said. Meanwhile in "Dark Wolverine," Daken will continue to follow his "desire to consolidate power and, though it sounds cliché, control the whole world" with the help of Mystique.

"Wolverine & The Incredible Hercules" by Frank Tieri and Juan Santacruz is on its way in March of 2011, featuring the two scrappers on a bar-brawling tour of the Marvel U.

The sold-out "X-Force" was discussed by Remender who said of the team's mission to kill the future Apocalypse. "It doesn't matter the size of the threat, though in terms of what the threat is...it's Apocalypse!" he said. "When these guys go in and make their minds up to take down this guy before he brings on this Apocalypse-style bad times...we know the scope and scale of the fire he can bring down." Part of the focus and fun of the series for the writer is watching a small unit of X-Men who are on their own face down one of the biggest A-level villains in the MArvel U. "They're going to do some of the murder, some of the killing" he joked, noting that there would be solid character work beneath the surface elements to make fans care and understand the moral dimension of what a team of assassins goes through.

An upcoming "X-Factor" storyline will answer the question of how the mutant detective agency can survive in a New York City where J. Jonah Jameson is mayor. David said the story will flash back to a time when the mayor allowed Jamie Maddrox to start his agency saying "Some day, and this day may never come...I may ask you to perform a service for me." The story will follow what happens when Jameson calls in the favor.

David teased future issues that address more social aspects from the real world with stories that "should have some interesting fodder" including an issue focusing on a high school suicide caused by bullying and stories surrounding by M's Muslim background. "I like shaking things up and making people examine characters by looking at their background...I want 'X-Factor' to be a book where people can read really grounded stories that have some significance to the world we live in."

"Fall of the New Mutants" was teased as "The 'Empire Strikes Back' of Zeb Wells and Leonard Kirk's run" by Schaefer.

The next arc in "X-Men: Legacy" will be called "Fables of the Reconstruction" which focuses on the rebuilding of San Francisco led by Cyclops in the wake of "Second Coming" which may not go as well as expected. The story will feature a number of mutants including Rogue Magneto, Hellion, Hope, Omega Sentinel and more.

Finally, the panel announced a new event for the X-Men called "Age of X" which Singh described as "The end of mutants as we know them" before teasing a similar hook for the mystery story (and its mystery cast who were teased as silhouetted figures) to the well-known "Age of Apocalypse" story which temporarily rewrote the timeline of X-Men comics.

Fan questions started with a rather flippant fan giving Remener guff for the hook of "FrankenCastle" which the writer defended as as unique story which got to the heart of the character. Eventually, things moved to a more civil if still questioning tone as a fan wanted to know why no characters commented on Hope's similarity to Jean Grey and her possible connection to the Phoenix Force. Alonso said the writers chose to play the suspicions of the characters close to the vest, but that "every question fans have been asking, the characters have been asking."

"Since 'Messiah CompleX,' we have a long-terms story that is like five TV seasons of stories to tell," Alonso said in terms of how the twice-annual X-Summits plan the major shakeups of the X-Books each year. He said the "X-Men" title is currently key in introducing the team back to the Marvel U, but the plan for the whole line is to be diverse and let David's book be different than Carey's book be different than Gillen's books and so on.

A reader asked if David would ever go into the idea that Jamie Maddrox may not be a mutant as we traditionally understand it within the fan's lifetime. David asked in response, "Are you planning on dying before issue #228?"

"You will see more vampires and more Dracula," Alonso said in response to a question on how the "Curse of the Mutants" storyline would continue to roll into the future of the Marvel U.

A young lady asked after David's tease that a member of X-Factor would leave the agency in a future story. While the writer wouldn't name the character, he said, "I should point out that just because a character leaves the team, it doesn't necessarily mean they'll leave the book."

When a reader asked if Marvel could drop the prices on $3.99 titles like DC Comics is (to some audience applause), David asked if fans who want to see titles drop to $2.00 would also like to see their local comic shops go out of business. As costs rise for retailers in terms of rent and operational expenses, he argued, books must also rise sometimes.

"We totally understand as people your concern," added Alono, noting Marvel's announcement of some cheaper books shipping. "The DC announcement is not without controversy" which included the drop of two editorial pages, which is a move which may have its own effects on the market and concerns for creators and fans. "It's not quite as simple as 'Drop your books to $2.99, and everything will be okay." Singh said that many new books debuting in 2011 will ship at $2.99 and that comparing Marvel's new moves to DC's isn't fair to either company.

Assistant Editor Daniel Ketchum was called on stage from the audience to discuss any potential future stories for Gambit. He and Carey agreed that fans of the Rogue/Gambit relationship will be happy with future issues of "Legacy" which will bring another character into the proceedings who will throw a wrench into those characters ongoing romance.

Remender promised a fan that past issues focusing on Apocalypse will factor in to the birth of the new Apocalypse in "X-Force," however the version of the character seen in a recent "flash-forward futures" in the X-books shouldn't be considered canon yet.

A fan asked about whether the "X-Factor" cast will ever learn or know about Wolfsbane's time with X-Force, and while some issues surrounding that series will play in, for the time being she will keep the trauma of that experience to herself, and her teammates will respect her wishes on that front.

A reader asked about what could happen in "Age of X," but the panel said that nothing could be revealed at the time being outside of a January 2011 release date.

Hellion will not be receiving hands anytime soon.

The mutants at large finding out about Cyclops' "kill squad" of X-Force is an idea that's too big to use in a story until it can be given the proper space and scope, according to Remender.

At this year's Chicago Comics And Entertainment Expo (AKA C2E2), Marvel Comics titled their mutant-themed panel after one of the most famous phrases in the canon of the franchise: "Welcome To The X-Men." For the festivities, Marvel Talent Coordinator C.B. Cebulski and Editor Daniel Ketchum joined "Age of X" artist Clay Mann and took the stage to talk about the entire X-Line, and CBR News was on hand with all the news from which classic villain will soon return to what upcoming stories will shake up the state of the mutants.

The panel teased the incoming MMXI promo push that makes 2011 "The Year of The X-Men." Ketchum explained that he and Mike Carey have been planning for "Age of X" as an event for almost two years. Three issues are currently in stores crossing "X-Men Legacy" and "New Mutants." Ketchum also plugged the incoming "X-Men: First To Last" story that starts in "X-Men Giant Size" before moving into the regular "X-Men" series under the pen of Chris Yost. It sees X-Men of the past and present face a new foe. Kieron Gillen's run on "Uncanny X-Men" will soon crossover with "Fear Itself," however they could say not much more.

Details emerged for the previously teased "Dark Angel Saga" about to hit "Uncanny X-Force." Apparently, writer Rick Remender will take the Archangel part of Warren Worthington's persona in a new aggressive direction starting with issue #10. Read CBR's exclusive interview with the writer about the arc right now.

The panel revealed the new team at the heart of "X-Men Legacy" after "Age of X" including new team members Frenzy and Legion who join diehard cast members like Professor X, Magneto and Rogue. A cover for an incoming issue of "X-Factor" featuring M and Strong Guy in a tragic embrace came on. Ketchum joked that with shake-ups coming into the series, writer Peter David liked to keep fans guessing...as well as editors. Apparently, the editor is a bit in the dark as to what comes next aside from the fact that it will impact the lives of several of the cast in a major way.

Daniel Acuña will soon draw an arc of Jason Aaron's "Wolverine" which will continue to feature covers by Jae Lee. Meanwhile, Daniel Way has stories plotted out for "Deadpool" through issue #50.

The mics were soon turned over to the assembled fans. Asked about a new book featuring the younger mutants in the X-Men world, Ketchum turned a fan towards "Generation Hope" which he said will be the place for stories of young heroes in this world for the foreseeable future.

"When we were first planning this event, Mike Carey came to me with the idea of 'Hey, I want to do a story that involves all the generations of X-Men,'" Ketchum said, noting that the scope of the story pushed it from a six-issue arc to a full-blown event. He had difficulty speaking to the future of certain characters as the end of the story will have an impact on the modern timeline.

Asked if some of the characters in Utopia would reenter the rest of the Marvel Universe, the editor called for "Baby Steps." The incoming crossover between the "Uncanny X-Men" annual and other Marvel U annuals will scratch that itch, though Ketchum said, "That is a valid concern." Cebulski said Marvel was very aware that fans want to see the mutants take a bigger role in the Marvel U at large.

After a fan asked how old Magneto was physically after being de-aged so many times, Ketchum told Mann that there had been internal discussion as his Magneto in "Legacy" was "young and sexy" and making out with Rogue while the Magneto of Jamie McKelvie's art seemed much older. The editor said it's best to assume he's a very active 50-something in the way he looks and that it's fine for Rogue to hook up with an older man.

A fan asking after a possible Nightcrawler resurrection, saying that the mutants get resurrected more than Jesus, earned a round of applause from the audience. Ketchum admitted they'd talked about it in the offices, but they felt for now they should let fans speculate as to whether the office will "play against type" in a world where characters come back all the time.

Another fan praised the team for leaving Jean Grey dead while also earning the tease that "You'll see Sabertooth in 2011" according to Ketchum.

"X-Men First To Last" is "our way of acknowledging the film" that will be "X-Men First Class," Ketchum explained. Yost already had the core of the idea for the story, but Marvel green lit the story featuring the classic 1963 X-Men for now specifically so fans of the movie would have a somewhat similar story to tap into in the comics.

A fan argued that "you need a furry, wolfy creature" to make "New Mutants" work asking is Wolfsbane would appear in the series, but Ketchum said that for now, she had an integral role to play in Peter David's "X-Factor" plans. The reader followed up by asking when Karma would "get a girl," to which the editor said sometimes Greg Land would sneak in panels featuring various romantic possibility scenes so the odds of that plotline slipping through to the final product were more likely than readers may expect.

In designing the look of the "Age of X" mutants, Mann said that he tried not to look to other alternate reality comic stories but instead looked at things like video games and films for stylistic inspiration. "With Gambit, I Googled a lot of military stuff," the artist explained before an "Age of X" Dazzler cosplayer appeared in the back of the room to meet the man who designed her C2E2 look.

While Deadpool is not a mutant, the staff at Marvel have found that he fits well within the X-Men's world thanks to his connection to Wolverine's past, however Ketchum said that in recent years, Deadpool has become a character all his own that can have crazy space adventures with absurd characters that you'd never be able to shoehorn into an X-Men book.

Majorie Liu has plans to bring Gambit in to Daken's world and continue some of the character development she started with him while writing X-23.

The young mutant Hellion came up, and Ketchum explained that though Mike Carey is a really nice guy, the editor made him be a really mean guy to put the hero through his paces in "X-Men Legacy." The pair love working with the character, but it may be a while before they can give him the page time fans want in "Legacy," though they haven't forgotten about him.

Ketchum joked that Nick Lowe is asking questions about Magneto such as "How does control over metal let you make force fields?" and that one of the newly-minted leader of the X-line's goals was to put a tight focus on who the character is and what he can do. Lowe also loves cat-Beast, so anyone hoping to get the classic blue Beast back better not hold their breaths.

Another reader wanted to know if despite Rictor's incoming baby with Wolfsbane, would the mutant's status with teammate Shatterstar be explored in the near future. Ketchum assured the man that Peter David doesn't introduce these elements willy nilly and though it may take him a while to get all the story points he wants together, he will not forget that thread.

Asked whether "Generation X" characters including Chamber and Penance would show up soon, Ketchum said that Chamber fans may want to follow "Age of X." Cebulski said that after his use of Penance (who is again called Penance since Speedball is again Speedball) in the "Loners" series, the question for the character is what happened to her since Ben Urich has appeared again in Marvel books no longer in her company. Ketchum joked that Cebulski needs to "give her back" so they could reintroduce the heroine.

A few snippets from Newsarama that didn't make it into this one:

Of the image of Colossus putting on Juggernaut's helmet, Ketchum said, "Think about it and make of it what you will."

Here's an inevitable question - when are we going to see Havok next? "Read X-Men Legacy #250 for some clues on that," Ketchum said.

Ketchum said Gambit will continue to be a part of X-23.

"Are we going to get defined teams?" "That's certainly a rumor," Ketchum said. "If you could only see your inboxes today," Cebulski added.

"When Nate Grey comes back, is he going to be the original, whiny Nate Grey, or the leather jacket, 'mutant Jesus' Nate Grey?" Ketchum said that Nate Grey is a character that's a little different every time we see him, so wait and see.

Cebulski said that "100%, no bull*****," the character to watch in the next few years is Hope.

More with Anole and Rockslide? "We want to so badly," Ketchum said.

Molly Hayes in X-Men? Ketchum said they'd love to do it at some point, they're just figuring out how to make it work. "If we can make it work, I know Nick Lowe and I would love too," he answered.

Will we ever get to a point where Emma is "accepted as a heroic figure"? Ketchum said that "one of the beautiful things about Emma" is that she exemplifies that characters don't have to be good or bad.

More on the subject of gray areas, Ketchum pointed out that all of the current main X-Men Legacy characters have some degree of a "shady past."

More Storm in X-Men? "If I have anything to say, yes," Ketchum said, adding that Storm is his favorite character, and his dream project is to edit a comic called "Her name is Storm, she beats *****es up with weather."

Ketchum answered, "She's been around, and if I have anything to say about it, we'll see more of her soon."

With more characters and more soap operatics than any other property in their pantheon, Marvel Comics' X-Men line is jam-packed with comics and fans who have strong opinions on said comics. So for their "Welcome To The X-Men" panel at WonderCon 2011 in San Francisco, the publisher looked to engender some local love with an X-Men variant cover draping the heroes in the colors of hometown heroes the San Francisco Giants. Although more than just opening day fever was expected at the event Saturday afternoon, and CBR News was on hand for all the action.

Marvel staffers including Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso took the stage, as Marvel Talent Coordiantor C.B.Cebulski welcomed the room by declaring the panel one that was slightly hungover but excited to be in San Fran for a fourth year straight of X-Men news. "Wolverine" writer Jason Aaron and "Uncanny X-Force" writer Rick Remender rounded out the group.

Cebulksi ran through a series of slides showing covers for the upcoming X-Men comics including "X-Men First To Last," "New Mutants" and "X-Factor" with much of the information already being public knowledge. The panelists were able to speak to the particulars of their own books. "'What is Archangel?' is the question, and why did Apocalypse put him in Warren Worthington?" Remender said about the incoming arc of of "X-Force" which he said will expand the Apocalypse mythology in terms of the winged character leading to more stories later in the year. "We're going to end up in the Age of Apocalypse [world] as the team tracks something down that's important for [Warren.]"

Aaron spoke "One of the first Wolverine things I did was 'Get Mystique'...and this is pretty much a sequel to that with a huge turning point in the Wolverine/Mystique relationship," said Aaron, promising that after this story fans can expect more stabbing in the book.

The full details of the main book in the "X-Men: Schism" event were then announced – written by Aaron with art over the five issues by Carlos Pacheco, Frank Cho, Adam Kubert, Alan Davis and Daniel Acuña. "Scott Summers coming into his role as leader of the X-Men, and Wolverine as his first officer..when 'Schism' opens, we see these guys as Butch and Sundance, as close as they've been in their long history together. Then something happens...giant robots are involved...and there's a lot of hugging," Aaron said, with the final comment being a gag.

"We've been building to this for years now. Scott has carried a huge burden bringing the mutant race back from the brink of extinction, and there's a huge price to pay for that," said Alonso saying the story would be built upon the increasing militarization of the team over the past several years of stories.

The panel then announced a one-shot called "Wolverine: The Fifth Quarter" written by Food Network star and San Fran native Chef Chris Cosentino and drawn by Tim Seeley. The book will take place in the city with the writer saying, "This will be very food-centric and very much about San Francisco...it's an honor to me being able to actually write a comic book. I loved Wolverine as a kid and would just sit there staring at my hands."

The floor opened to fan questions then with a man wondering if a new X-Men animated series was in the works. Cebulski said there were plans, but more info would be coming at the Marvel Animation panel later in the weekend.

Shifting gears, one reader asked if original Venom Eddie Brock would appear in Remender's "Venom" comic, to which the writer replied. "Yes, there's a lot of connectivity between 'Venom' and upcoming Spider-Man stories...the way that we find Eddie will be surprising."

Some questions about specific characters hit including Bobby Drake and Gambit. "You will most definitely see Iceman in a significant role in the X-Universe in the near future," Aaron said, adding that the plans for the character will explore his past. Remender and Aaron have spent a lot of time talking about the character and how to incorporate him into the line. Cebulski said that Gambit will appear in "X-Men Legacy" as well as Marjorie Liu's "X-23" series.

Local concerns came up with a reader requesting more of San Francisco in the X-Men books since the team is now located in the city. "I want to see my house on panel," he joked with Alonso promising him that he's constantly bugging Nick Lowe to incorporate more of the locales of his hometown into the books.

The characters involved with "Schism" were asked after. "Hope and the Five Lights are a big part of ['Schism'] as well as may of the other students," Aaron said, though the panel confirmed that Jean Grey would not return in the books, though Phoenix fans could see an alternate Jean in the "Age of Apocalypse" arc of "Uncanny X-Force."

"The running theme through all of these characters is that they're damaged...so what they do, they do so their friends don't have to. But there are some membership changes coming up you should look out for," Remender said about the makeup of "Uncanny X-Force."

Alonso spoke to his frequent discussion point of the desire for fans to have stories that count. He said that over the past few years, they've grown the X-Men line more into one major epic that has big twists and turns every few years. "Back when we were planning 'Messiah CompleX,' we kind of sort of saw 'Schism' coming," he explained, noting that characters including Hope, Cable and Bishop will continue to see their interpersonal storylines reverberate throughout the whole X-Men line.

A fan dressed as the villain Stryfe came up asking about Cable's arm that survived the final battle of "Second Coming" and wondering if it portended a return of the character. "Yeah, there's an arm...but we don't bring back characters that much," laughed Alonso, giving a special shout out to a fan dressed as Nightcrawler.

A discussion broke out about how editorial went about bringing back certain characters including the Exiles cast. Cebulski said that there are characters with their fan at Marvel, however the company was loath to just release books with characters fans want if they haven't found a writer with a compelling pitch to make the book work for a broad audience. "Runaways" is a classic example of this, he said.

"The fact of the matter is that the X-Men have had to put their own house in order...struggling for the survival of their species while waiting for this Messiah child to appear," Alonso said, noting that with the "X-Men" monthly was an "exploratory jab" to the fans to see how an X-Men universe working closer to the Marvel U would go over. "We want the X-Men Universe and the Marvel Universe to overlap, and we've wanted that for a while...'Schism' is a first step [in that direction]," the E-i-C later explained.

Cyclops and Wolverine look really funky on that cover.

CBR's live coverage of Comic-Con International in San Diego continue with Marvel's X-Men panel. On hand for the discussion are Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso, Director of Communications Arune Singh, Marjorie Liu, Daniel Way, Rick Remender, Chris Yost, and Peter David.

Singh began by describing "Schism" as "the end of the X-Men as you know them—that's not hype." Alonso said "Schism" will "position them as a struggle for hearts and minds" in a way similar to the Xavier/Magneto rivalry. Both Logan and Cyclops have "strong and defendable positions," and fans may be divided about whose perspective they agree with.

Singh reiterated yesterday's announcement that "Schism" will be released day-and-date digital, with the entire X-Men line available in simultaneous digital release by the end of the year.

“Generation Hope ties in in a major, major way,” Singh said, especially with issues ten and elevin.

"X-Men: Regenesis" begins in October with a one shot by Kieron Gillen and Billy tan. Alonso added that mutants would be divided along ideological lines, and "each team will have a very specific mission statement."

Editor Nick Lowe appeared on video describing "Schism," with various editors performing small bits with him as he walked down a hallway at Marvel HQ.

On one side, a new series "Wolverine and the X-Men" will launch in October, while on the other, "Uncanny X-Men" gets a new #1. Emma Frost was the only character shown. "You'll notice there's no Cyclops," Singh said. "You'll have to read 'Schism' to find out why."

Remender spoke about the current “Dark Angel Saga” in “Uncanny X-Force,” which takes place in the Age of Apocalypse universe. Singh added that “Schism” would affect all X-Men teams, X-Force included.

David said that “X-Factor” #230, tying in with “Schism,” “is one of my favorite scripts I've ever turned in.” He said he enjoys the team dynamic of “people sitting around talking about what's going on,” and that the “personality-driven” tone of “Schism” fits very well with what he's doing in the series. Rahne's baby will be born soon in a story that “leads to the death of one of the team,” followed immediately by the “Schism” crossover.

David also described working with oncoming artist Leonard Kirk previously on "Supergirl" as "a highlight of my career," and described him as "an artist who you know, whatever you throw at him, he can handle it."

Yost spoke very briefly on "X-Men: First to Last," which concludes this week, but he added that he has several "secrety" projects coming up.

Singh announced "X-Men #1 20th Anniversary Edition," recolored by Tom Mason, for October, celebrating the best selling comic book of all time.

The next announcement sees Ron Garney returning to "Wolverine," and that Wolverine is being forced out of San Francisco. "He needs some money, so he goes to his stash. But someone's stolen his stash, and that's a very bad idea. He's going to get it back, and he'll tear apart San Francisco to find it."

X-23 will be facing the FF, and Liu spoke on that series. The first year of "X-23," she said, was about establishing her character, while "the next year is about introducing her to the Marvel Universe."

"When I get the pages from Phil [Noto] and Sana [Takeda], I am blown away," she said of her artists.

"Daken: Dark Wolverine" came up next, a character created and popularized by Liu and Way, now written by Rob Williams. Daken will be trying to rise through the ranks in LA and will encounter Moon Knight. "A lot of characters are moving to LA, and there's a reason for that," Singh said.

Way then talked about Evil Deadpool. "Evil Deadpool is a collection of Deadpool's former body parts that were thrown into a dumpster and gelled together," Way explained. Though "he has two right arms," Evil Deadpool has all the abilities of regular Deadpool but without any morality.

"Evil Deadpool does lead into something really big, but I don't have clearance to talk about it yet," Way said. But Singh showed a screen with only the word "Dead," in the style of Deadpool's logo, with the subtitle February 2012.

Singh then opened the floor to questions.

A fan asked whether SWORD would cross over into X-Men. "The place you're likely to see it cross over is 'Astonishing X-Men,'" Alonso said.

The next question: "When's Jean coming back?" "It's not the 616 Jean," Remender said, "but Jean plays a big role in 'Dark Angel Saga.'" Wolverine will have to deal with a living Jean Grey and Nightcrawler.

Alonso said that the decision to reboot "Uncanny X-Men" is "rooted in story." "We didn't make the decision lightly. Over the years since I joined Marvel, there have been times we could have and didn't, you follow me?" But now, there's "a reckoning" between Cyclops and Logan, and that this fully replaces the dynamic of "crusty old guys" Xavier and Magneto.

Mike Carey will be handling Starjammers in "X-Men Legacy," Singh said, adding that the spacefaring team plays a role in "Regenesis."

David said that there will be more Darwin. "I do not believe for a second that he died in the most recent X-Men. His whole schtick is he can't die! You killed the guy who can't die." He added the character will certainly return in "X-Force."

Asked about Hope's relationship to Jean Grey, Singh said there may not be a connection, while Alonso coyly suggested quite the opposite. "We can't say anything without giving away what Kieron [Gillen]'s doing," Singh said.

"X-Men," "X-Men Legacy," "Generation Hope," and "X-Force" will continue beyond Schism, Alonso and Singh said. "None of them are on the chopping block," Alonso added, saying there are covers for the rest of the year "and beyond." Each series will have a role to play. Singh later added that the same applies to "New Mutants."

Alonso also said that "there's a reason 'Fear Itself' and 'Schism' come to a conclusion the same month," adding that the X-Men will play a large role in the Marvel U.

Asked about Psylocke's seeming loss of telekinesis, Remender said it's simply a power he's not interested in using. He added that "Uncanny X-Force" will also try to sort out Psylocke's convoluted history, and noted that if all her powers were included, that too would be convoluted. "Does she still have bionic eyes, do I deal with all the Spiral stuff? If you try to work in everything that's been done with Betsy Braddock over forty years, I'd blow my brains out."

The creators were asked which X-Men paradigm they would choose. "Wolverine—his side sells better," David said. Alonso said it was a good question, saying "I wish I could say I'm on Wolverine's side, but I'm not." He added, in response to the question's phrasing, "don't assume Cyclops will be around."

Asked if any characters would return from Age of Apocalypse, Remender said, "I don't want to give anything away, but we're going crazy with it." There will be ramifications in the other X-books, and "something will come back."

Remender said that his story will explore "what Death is," why Apocalypse was chosen as the first mutant, and more.

A fan asked about Mimic. "There are no immediate Mimic plans, because we really don't like him that much," Alonso laughed.

Asked about another fan-favorite character, "You might see Maggot coming back—I'm not saying that definitively," Remender said.

"There are very very exciting things coming up for Age of Apocalypse, you will not believe how exciting," Remender said, following another fan questions. He's making an effort to "tidy up" and define that universe.

Asked about Cable, Singh said, "we can't say anything about Cable, except that he is very dead right now." "Or is he?" Alonso said.

David was asked whether Scarlet Witch's returning Rictor's power in "Children's Crusade" and how involved he was. "Well, they called me about it and explained the story reason—it wasn't just like, 'we're doing this, suck it, David!" The change will be reflected beginning in "X-Factor" #225. He did not incorporate the shift immediately in order to avoid spoiling "Children's Crusade" in the event that miniseries ran late.

David added, "He displays his powers to Shatterstar, and the first thing he says is, 'I can't wait to show Rahne.' And Shatterstar says, 'Excuse me?'" This will complicate their relationship to a new degree.

The Gamemaster is still in X-23's head, Liu confirmed, a development that will be dealt with later on. “He finds her fascinating because her mind is so quite,” the writer said.

Yost said the "Avengers" cartoon can use pretty much any Marvel character, including Wolverine.

Asked how the Cyclops/Wolverine dynamic could play out if Cyclops was off the board post-"Schism," Alonso said, "Well, Martin Luther King isn't around. But there's an idea." Whether Cyclops or Wolverine was ultimately right in his choices will be the true conflict.

Shatterstar and Longshot's similar DNA will be addressed in "X-Factor," David said, but "as with everything I do, I'm not going to do it right away. I'm going to drop hints over a year or so and drive fans crazy, and read everything they say about what they think is going to happen, and do the opposite."

"Iceman has a big role to play in a book coming out toward the end of the year," Singh said in response to a fan question about the character. "The Age of Apocalypse Iceman plays a huge role in 'Uncanny X-Force.'"

Molly of the Runaways may return, and those characters will be used throughout the Marvel Universe. This does not mean, Singh said, that the team is being broken up.

With that, the panel concluded.

This.

They may as well just make the X-men be Wolverine and his clones/children if they are going to do that :csad:

If they do get rid of Cyclops for a bit I wouldn't mind seeing Havok step up into his brothers shoes and lead the other X-Men team its probably going to be someone like Emma though

"You're not here for the DC 52, are you?" joked Marvel Director of Communications Arune Singh at the outset of the publisher's X-Men Regenisis panel at Fan Expo in Toronto this past weekend. The crowd laughed as C.B. Cebulski, Axel Alonso, Jason Aaron and Jeanine Schaefer took their seats to address the changes occurring in the Marvel Universe this fall, beginning with the events of "X-Men Schism."

"It really is the biggest thing to happen to the X-Men in a very long time" Alonso told the assembled crowd. "[We're] taking X-Men to a place most people thought they'd never go and really dividing them." Aaron revealed that issue four of the series "ends with the first round of the biggest, nastiest, gnarliest Cyclops vs Wolverine fight we've ever seen. We've seen these guys butt heads before over the years and tussle a little bit, but never anything like this. That carries over to issue five, and the fallout from that really redefines the X-Men universe for the foreseeable future. It creates new dynamics…to play out across the Marvel Universe." Singh asked where the idea for the new Hellfire club came from, and Aaron joked, "I'm just terrified of children, I guess. I say that as a father." He also promised the audience that the newly-introduced characters would stick around beyond the event.

Singh explained that Regenesis will revolve around the X-Men being divided into two camps, "one with Wolverine in charge and the other, I think we can say now, with Cyclops," citing the "X-Men Regenesis" one-shot in October as an ideal jumping-on point for new readers. "That's where we see the guys choosing sides," Aaron clarified.

"Both sides have equally valid perspectives, so it wouldn't surprise me if you guys in the audience, after you understand what the Schism is about, have to decide which sides of the battle lines you fall on," Alonso added. "We were talking about this, and I know who I stand with -- and it wasn't the same person Nick (Lowe) did. It'll be very interesting. Many years ago, when people took sides, either Cap or Tony, this is a very similar thing." Later in the panel, these divides were further clarified, with Cebulski and Aaron siding with Wolverine, Alonso and Schaefer choosing Cyclops and Singh waffling between the two.

"I was on the CBR X-Men message boards reading about Schism and who's right, and there was, like, seventy-five pages of arguments -- which I thought was awesome," Aaron said with a smile. "It's exactly what we wanted, 'cause that's what we were doing in the room that day when we were talking about it."

Singh proceeded to show the audience covers of the upcoming issues. Cyclops and Emma Frost (on the cover of "Uncanny X-Men" #1) will be joined by X-Man in the pages of "New Mutants" #33, which forms an interlocking cover with "X-Men" #20 (featuring Jubilee at the forefront) and "Generation Hope" #13 (with Sebastian Shaw).

Aaron spoke about the October launch of "Wolverine and the X-Men," calling the experience "the most fun I've had since I came to Marvel. I love it. If you read 'Schism,' if you read my 'Astonishing Spider-Man/Wolverine' stuff, this is kind-of in that vein. It's dark at times, it's crazy, it's emotional, but at the end of the day, hopefully, it's just flat-out fun." The book will feature new characters in addition to "characters from pretty much every era of X-Men history." Having never worked on a team book before, Aaron suggested his page rate be re-evaluated as Singh showed the covers to "X-Men Legacy" #259 (with Rogue), "X-Factor" #230 (with Havok) and "Uncanny X-Force" #19 (with Nightcrawler), taunting the audience to speculate on the characters still left in silhouette.

The conversation then took an unexpected turn towards the topic of crying. "Jeanine cries at the drop of a hat," Alonso deadpanned. "She holds the record in the X-office. I think the worst moment was when we were doing 'Second Coming' and we realized that we were going to be killing Cable. It was a necessary part of the story. He was sacrificed to save Hope. I looked across the table and I saw a little tear in Jason's eye. So I quickly fastened onto his weakness and pointed out, 'He's crying, he's crying!' In turn, I wiped my eyes clear."

Singh took a moment to acknowledge writer Mike Carey, who will be ending his run on "X-Men Legacy" before showing the cover to "Astonishing X-Men" #44, where Storm and Cyclops are portrayed in the midst of a passionate kiss, apparently in the process of cheating on their respective partners Black Panther and Emma Frost.

Discussion of Aaron's run on Wolverine resulted in a few chuckles from the crowd. "No one does violence like Jason Aaron!" Singh declared, as the writer broke down a madcap, "palate-cleansing" plot, featuring dragons and kung-fu. "Wolverine's gotta leave town. First, he wants his money, which he left in Chinatown. And somebody took it. It guest-stars Gorilla Man and Fat Cobra."

Schaeffer touched on the X-23's quest for a soul and team-up with FF and Daken's move to LA before Singh explained the idea behind Evil Deadpool. "I knew nothing about it until after I asked Daniel Way at Comic-Con [International], and he explained it to everyone this simply and I'll tell you all you need to know. Over the years, Deadpool had been cut up, chopped up, beaten to pieces -- those random parts of his body were thrown in a dumpster somewhere and came together to form Evil Deadpool. If I have to say anything else to you to make you buy this comic, you are not the right audience. So, please buy Evil Deadpool, because that is the coolest idea ever. And if someone cosplays as Evil Deadpool here next year, I promise to give you something really cool."

He then teased something called "Dead," which Alonso refused to elaborate on, and "Magneto: Not a Hero" by Skottie Young and Clay Mann, before offering a limited edition Archangel X-Force figure -- signed by the panel -- to the audience member with the best question.

A fan asked if Aaron's beard ever influenced his writing, prompting the admission that "pretty much every book I take over now has a character with a beard." Quite a few "wait and see's" were thrown around, but it was confirmed that Northstar will be a "dual resident" of both the X-Men and Alpha Flight.

"It's my feeling that DC's reboot of their titles has antagonized a lot of long-time DC readers," an audience member suggested. "Has Marvel marketing and Marvel editorial thought about reaching out to DC readers who'd like to read a comic book that's other than issue number one?" Singh, calling himself a DC fan -- especially of Stephanie Brown's Batgirl -- replied, "We create enough jumping on points with our number ones. We don't throw out 52 in one month. With our .1 issues, with very accessible events, we create a lot of good entry points for readers, whether they're DC readers, Image readers, Oni readers -- whatever they are."

Alonso added, "DC will do what it needs to do, and quite frankly, we hope DC does well. We respond better to good competition, and we're all in this together despite the snipes we do back and forth for theater and what-not. We want DC to be healthy. If they can take September, more power to 'em. It just inspires us to up our game the other eleven months, you follow me?"

It was also asked which of the 52 new DC titles the panelists were most excited to check out. Singh went with "Voodoo" and Schaefer chose "Wonder Woman" ("I prefer no pants!") while Cebulski said "anything Scott Snyder does."

A fan asked if Jubilee's loyalty to Wolverine would prompt her to act as a mole within Team Cyclops. Schaefer responded, "Jubilee has been through a lot lately. She's one of my favorite characters, so I'm really happy that she's back on the board and stepping up. Obviously, I'm not going to tell you what happens in the book, but she has her reasons, and they are her reasons. So if you like Jubilee, pick up 'X-Men,' because she's a huge part of it." Another fan asked if certain characters would be lost in the shuffle, leading Shaeffer to reassure the audience that the Marvel team had gone over an extensive character list, ensuring that "everyone has picked a side."

Jean Grey's death was brought up, prompting a round of applause from the audience in favor of the character's retirement. Cebulski reiterated that he was not involved in the "X-Men: Origins Wolverine" movie. Then, a woman asked which Marvel characters the panelists most identified with. The breakdown was as follows: Cebulski as Danny Moonstar, Alonso as "tortured" Scott, Aaron as Wolverine, Schaefer as Jubilee and Singh as Thunderbird 3. For her original inquiry, she won the Archangel figure.

The panel wrapped with a slide announcing Brian Wood as "coming in 2012."
