No guarantee that Kang will be the Thanos...it has been assumed that Doom will be stepping into that role...what makes you think the F4 won't be left alone like they look in the comics, like it should be???

He could just be a minor villain.

Aside from doubting Kang will be a one off, a new Thanos or not, I suspect this is confirmation that we're getting a black Reed Richards as rumoured (Lakeith Stanfield, JDW) elsewhere....good. Save the inevitable racist *****ing about fictional characters for a reddit thread.

This shouldn’t be confirmation one way or another that Reed will be race-bent as we have no idea whether or not Marvel will retain Kang’s backstory of being a descendant of Reed in a possible future. Remember, the MCU doesn’t always follow the comics and they’ve tinkered with the comics origins of characters they’ve adapted before. Look at Peter Quill where they completely eliminate his blood relation to J’Son and made him the son of Ego, and they could easily not have him ever have a human identity named ‘Nathaniel Richards’ and just change him to being pure alien that was always the time traveling being known as Kang similar to what the MCU did with Thor when they skipped over the Donald Blake identity and just had Thor as Asgardian from the start, and like they did with Drax and Mantis(who were both human in comics before becoming aliens).

Just a warning folks before things get heated... No personal attacks and no baiting.

Kang is a far distant ancestor of Reed's, so Director Reed can keep the familial ties even if he likes a lighter skinned fellow for the role.

They can do whatever they want with Kang's ancestry, like they did with Hela or Ego.

Seems like every major baddie from the comics that could appear in the MCU has to either be the next Loki or the next Thanos. None of us want our favorite comic villains to be the next Ultron or the next Yon Rogg or the next Mandarin, but you can guarantee there are gonna be a couple of those. But hey, maybe somewhere in there we could also get the next Killmonger, or the next Vulture or Mysterio.

I'm hoping we'll wind up with a different set of supervillain models to call back to, besides recurring baddie (Loki) or final boss baddie (Thanos).

I think it opens the door up to a Black Reed, but also isn’t Kang hundreds of years in the future originally? Sue could be Black, they could both be white and we could just assume that their descendants had a few generations of marrying outside their race over the course of 500 years.

Of course, you could just make Reed Black. I freaking love Lakeith Stanfield so I couldn’t complain with that.

It has been “assumed” because Doom is an Avengers-level threat that’s on the table now, and we know the FF is coming someday. Those same two assumptions equally apply to Kang. Feige hasn’t implied one bit that Doom is the next big bad.

Besides, we might not even have a big bad again on the level of Thanos being hinted at and set up for like 5-10 movies before we get the payoff. For all we know Doom and Kang are both still Avengers-level movie threats but on a 3-5 movie scale. Galactus might be too. Doom isn’t the only villain left.

The MCU has made enough actual substantial changes to Marvel characters/history/lore over the years (and I love the MCU) to where I refuse to buy an argument that making Reed Black is too much of a major change. Eternals has race or gender bent half the dang cast and who cares? It doesn’t need to change a thing about his origin, his characteristics. GTFO with “as it should be.” Why do I have a feeling you don’t have that same energy about Pym and Janet not being young enough to be founding Avengers, about Quicksilver dying, about how radically different Infinity War movie was from the comics? Wonder why that could be...

What reason is there to think they WILL be "left alone"? I thought we had all finally gotten on board with not having an all-white cast.

Yes, I know that they're centuries apart and therefore can have literally any ethnic appearance. But Marvel has to know they'll be walking into a colossal ****show if they make heroic Reed white and his villainous descendant Black.

Hasn't Kang been rumored as the next cross-over villain for a while now, though?

When Jonathan Majors gets cast but it isn't Cyclops...

I'm excited for him as Kang, though slightly concerned about Peyton Reed getting tasked with introducing the hopeful "New Thanos." But this is REALLY interesting for the Fantastic Four because, unless they're making some drastic changes, Reed is going to be Black.

Rejoice! This is a meatier role with more to sink teeth into acting wise for him. I want Cyclops to shine on screen finally. But between the inevitable large ensemble cast, Cyclops can at best be a great portrayal with a few minutes of good moments per movie because they have to juggle a Civil-War sized cast. Especially when you know some characters like Storm and potentially Gambit and someday Wolverine will steal the spotlight.

Now you get Jonathan Majors showing a greater acting range and getting presumably a lot more screentime. And like you said, it likely makes Reed and thus someday Franklin into Black men, making the MCU a more diverse place!

I do think this casting can point to a black Reed Richard's, but I don’t think it confirms it or anything. If they make him Nathaniel Richard's, any number of his ancestors could have been black without it having been Reed.

But it is something to consider.

If they do make Reed black, I’m really not looking forward to the inevitable fan meltdowns lamenting the fact it’s not a white guy, especially if it’s not John Krasinski.

If Reed is black, I don't care. Just cast a talented actor and write an interesting character.

I don't think casting Majors automatically means we're getting a black Reed Richards. I still wanna see Oscar Isaac in the role, but I'm pretty open to whoever they cast

“Fantastic Four meets Cronenberg body horror. “

Gee...where have I heard that one before? :o

Please don't speak for me...you know what? I don't accept race or gender or,sexuality changes to,the,F4 specifically ...they have been cinematically destroyed over 3 films with all,the horrible changes done to them, actors, changes in character, race change etc...horrible... and,I really don't care what you all want or what you think I need to get on board with...part of the problem, with today is this mob mentality and I refuse it! My,vision of what they need,to do and I say they need to look, act, etc the way they have been for 60 years, an Eastern European Doom, and more...Marvel can mess with the Xmen and other properties...leave the F4 alone....and if Marvel cant get this right, then continue to crap all over the best team...

Kang originates from the 31st century. He is a far distant descendant of Reed Richards so his race has no barring on Reed or Sue's race. It really only takes one generation of the Richards family to marry and have children someone black to create a branch that produces a black Kang. It is entirely possible since Kang isn't born for a thousand years from now.

Jonathan Majors is currently playing a descendant of a white man in Lovecraft Country.

Also looks aren't necessarily tied to racial makeup. Many real life African Americans like Samuel L.Jackson and Spike Lee have white ancestors that would more recent than Kangs.

Anyway Majors is likely one of the few actors that doesn't need to get into shape for a Superhero movie. Growing Man vs Giant-Man battle would be awesome to watch.

I saw someone suggest introducing Cassie Lang's boyfriend in Ant-Man 3 and then revealing at the end of the film he is Iron Lad/Teen Kang

It's absolutely logical that Kang/Nathaniel's race has no bearing on Reed's race. But from a studio perspective, there will be a ton of bad press if they introduce a lily-white team of heroes and then drop in the fact that the lead's descendant is a black man and also a bad guy.

Regarding Iron Lad, I think this all but guarantees he shows up in this. Maybe a big role like you suggest, I'd pictured more of a Post-Credit scene where he appears to Cassie to warn that his future self is just getting started and taking her with him to form the Young Avengers. Lock down Caleb McLaughlin for the part stat.

I love Kang Dynasty. It's very exciting now that Marvel can use whomever they want from the Fox library. This is truly the first time we're getting a Fox character in the MCU.

Exciting times ahead
@chamber-music: I’d go a step farther in saying there’s no guarantee of Kang’s MCU origin retaining the comic book element of him being a distant descendant of Reed. In fact, it’s very likely Marvel doesn’t even bother to give him a human identity, and just makes him some ancient time travel being with no blood relation to any human being.
That would be... Odd. Kang is a conqueror of various human empires over the centuries. He's a man who uses advanced technology from the 30th century and beyond.

It would be weird for Marvel Studios to turn him into some sort of alien.. That wouldn't be Kang

Forgive me, I’m speaking from a place of ignorance since I’m not overly familiar with Kang’s history. I keep forgetting he’s wearing a mask and he’s human, but he looks pretty much as alien as Ronan but I deleted my post since I felt I displayed too much ignorance.

That being said, I wouldn’t be surprised if Marvel does take major liberties with the character of Kang. He doesn’t have to be an alien, but I could easily see his character repurposed as someone else’s descendant. In Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, he was a descendant of Stark instead of Reed, no? I can see them taking that route for the MCU.

MCU Kang can be not only a descendant of Stark but also another disgruntled employee of Stark. :o

If they keep the descendant thing it could mean Sue might be black (and Johnny). A descendant of Reed's would likely be of Sue too.
