Oscar Candidate?

Neither of them will win. The Golden Globes doesn't have a Visual Effects category. :oldrazz:
As you can tell I don't really follow these awards. :o

I think the visual effects were great in X3. They weren't over-the-top, they flowed with the movie. They didn't stick out like a sore thumb (like some CG-heavy effects do, like in Spider-man).

It's the same with the make-up. Though, I can't say we saw much of it. Either way, what we did see with some muties worked well with the movie, and wasn't too much.

Next year, maybe, but we're talking about this year.

That's what I was talking about. Next year it'll be a different story. But considering the movies this year there wasn't enough movies compete in terms of special effects.

It's going to come down to Pirates and Superman.

I really think they need to make another X-Men movie while the fire is still hot... :(

Even if it means cutting down the cast....

if superman wins... it will prove how ****ed up the oscars are

I think the FX in SR were superior to those in X3, probably due to the amount of time they had to work with them.

Each candidate can boast something groundbreaking. If you can put your hate for the quality of the movie to one side you can appreciate it more.

X3 has the groundbreaking deaging scene. (pics above)

POTC has CGI makeup...

Superman has the bullet-in-the-eye shot....

Poseidon first time a total CG integration of the spray, foam and bubbles effect is seen.

Eragon and Night at The Museum have CGI creatures and thats been done before many times. Not special enough with this years competition in my opnion.Casino Royale doesn't stand a chance.

If X3 and/or Superman land nominations and then win i think all hell will break loose here. For better or worse.:woot:

Mine too! "The Fountain" did get a Golden Globe nomination for Best Score, which it deserved, the score is amazing.
Yes it is! :yay: I´m really happy it was nominated, altough the movie deserved more than that. Hugh was amazing in The Fountain, but what we see is DiCaprio competing with himself! What the hell?!? :cmad:

I really think that the X3 score should be nominated too. Oh well, if not for the Globes, who knows, maybe it´ll receive an Oscar nomination? For me, it´s the best soundtrack of the three movies, hands down.

I'm listening to "The Fountain" soundtrack right now, as a matter of fact. :woot:

And it's not even Leo's fault...it's not like he nominated himself twice. And he was terrific in "The Departed." But nominating anyone twice in the same category is ridiculous...and the same goes for Clint Eastwood getting two Best Director nominations.

I also agree...X3 had the best score of the 3 movies. I especially liked the music during the scene at Jean's house.

Yeah, it´s not Leo´s fault indeed (and Clint´s), it´s just that it´s so annoying how it always seems to be the "same old, same old" when it comes down to those awards. I mean, two Di Caprio nominations, Depp nominated again(!) for Pirates...I´m surprised we didn´t see the old "Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett´s de rigueur nomination" number...yet, that is. :whatever: It´s like people have no imagination or are afraid of searching for something new, it´s so boring.

It´s a great scene and a very powerful music! Also during the Logan and Jean scene at the end, the music was one of the things that made it stand out imo.

amazing Pirates effects, wow. so it wasn't real make up. Amazing again.

And it's the Hollywood Foreign Press who awards the Golden Globes, and it's really all about who does the most schmoozing with the stars. :whatever:

I also can't believe they left out Abigail Breslin for "Little Miss Sunshine," or Ann Hathaway for "Devil Wears Prada." Or Michael Emerson from "Lost."

It just seems like they nominate the *usual suspects* year after year.

I loved the music in X3, it really was the best of the 3 movies.

But not as good as "The Fountain" score. :woot:

If you were in the academy you'd probably give all the Oscars to Ultraviolet and X3...

Yeah cos Ultraviolet and X3 are of similar quality movies in terms of FX etc?! No matter what you think of the movie itself, X3 did have great FX imo and is definitely worthy of a nomination.

Who cares? It's a cardinal sin that Johnny Depp hasn't won an oscar yet. :cmad: :csad:

X3 will probably get a nomination. In the end it'll be between Superman and Pirates obviously. I don't feel the FX in X3 were all that great, considering they could've been better with more time and focus.

Next year is going to be a different story though. I think it's safe to say, that Spider-Man 3, Pirates of the Caribbean 3, Ghost Rider, and Transformers will probably be nominated.

"300" looks amazing.

There's also "Golden Compass," which will be out in December. "Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium," "I Am Legend," and maybe even "The Invasion" all coming out next year.

I can't stand Harry Potter, which is why I forgot to mention it on purpose.

You're right about 300 and Sin City 2. Seems like it's going to be a competitive year in terms of FX. You think TMNT might get nominated for its use of CGI turtles and other creatures in a real world setting?

My bets for nominations or close nominations are:

Spider-Man 3, POTC 3, Transformers, Ghost Rider, and 300. Spider-Man 3, POTC 3, and Transformers are guaranteed to get nominated in the FX department.

Well, there is one thing I know for sure.

Fox should win the award for Worst Handled Trilogy/Franchise in the History of Film - for the way it has (mis)managed the X-Men.

I sometimes think it's a wonder these films were ever made and were ever enjoyable.

You don't look at LoTR or Spider-Man and immediately think of struggles and squabbles over budget, politics, changing directors... Possibly the general public doesn't know about all that stuff either. Good for them.

Isn't it about time Fox started to care about its products as a long-term investment, not a fast-buck, wham-bam cash-in? And I say this as someone who liked all three movies, while realising what they COULD have been if a lot more love and commitment was there.

Why are you admitting this now? You sure defended Fox, Ratner, Penn, and Kinberg in the past. Why start turning on them now?

i don't thinkg TMNT should get nominated....because if TMNT gets nominated the the flood gates for CGI movies will open...Meaning Shrek the third and Pixar animation will be very sour if TMNT get nominated and their movies didn't.....

No, not really. I've never really 'defended' them - I don't know them and am not their personal bodyguard, it's up to them to justify what they did. I've defended my right and that of others to enjoy the movie, fully absorb it and appreciate what WAS in it. And I've defended many things that are in the movie, because I think people are swinging wildly at the movie as though it is complete crap.

I also think that some decisions were made because of circumstances beyond the control of those making the decisions. For instance, Marsden chose to do SR, Paquin chose to do Margaret, Singer left with his creative team (i still don't understand or know exactly at what point that happened), Vaughn bailed out, Famke insisted on a split-personality Phoenix....

Bryan's X1 and X2 are better-made, better-told stories than X3, but X3 excels in other areas. None of the X-movies has entirely captured the source material. The whole franchise started off on the wrong foot with many of the characters and ideas.

The X-movies are difficult because of the number of characters to try to include. Omitting characters creates as much disappointment as including additional characters but not giving them the screentime they deserve. And then there are the contractual negotiations in bringing together such a big cast.

The problem with the X-franchise is that it stumbled along without a single 'vision' to hold it all together. That's because of circumstances. They made the first one in times when superhero movies were not popular, then suddenly they realised what they had. Because it was never conceived as a trilogy (and it should not really be limited to a trilogy), it has limped along with various changes along the way.

I really don't know if I want an X4, a reboot in a few years or for the franchise to be left alone. When i see great manips of a possible Gambit, I feel excited about seeing an X4. And characters like Angel and Beast deserve more time on screen.

I especially liked the music during the scene at Jean's house.

well i agree with u guys!! :cwink: so, x-3 shud get a musical award i guess!! :woot:

Actually, I think de-aging effects will be what probably get X3 a nomination. When you look at the movies in competition, they're all action movies.

i agree!! :oldrazz: :cwink:

edit: oops, I was 4 days late;

So X3 is one of the 7 movies pre-selected by The Academy. Only 3 will be nominated. IMO, it's Pirates, Superman and Eragon or Pirates, Superman and Poseidon.

The X-men and James Bond movies have a bunch of effects, but no coherence to them, just a jam of differnt effects...

And why do you think the effects in Eragon or Poseidon are better?
X3 has some really good special effects, and the de-aging is really original and groundbreaking. I don´t see anything similar to that in Eragon or Poseidon. Or in any other film, frankly.
