Apocalypse Oscar Isaac IS Apocalypse

Strange that on the EW cover he looks blue with a blue/grey armour and in the still both purple

The lighting is throwing a purple sheen on all three of them in the picture. Psylocke using her powers?

I agree with everyone who said that Apocalypse looks like a Power Rangers villain.

It's actually called make-up.

I think you misunderstood me. I was making a statement about how not being able to recognize Oscar Isaac isn't a bad thing.

And makeup and transforming your appearance and outer shell is part of the acting process, so we're kinda splitting hairs.

I love all these disparate responses to his design.

Can you imagine if they went full on roided out Fisher Price head, muppet-faced Apocalypse?

Heh.

Apocalypse has always looked ridiculous and pretty darn cheesy. Always. The pomposity and absurdity of him in relation to other characters is very much part of his character.

I love Apocalypse's costume since he looks like a futuristic Pharaoh, which is very faithful to the mythology. Apocalypse' appearance in the comics is usually devoid of the Egyptian elements, despite his backstory. He has some minor aesthetic differences in the movie that I'm totally ok with since they definitely show an understanding of the character.

Edit: Agreed, Guard.

Even though I like Apoc's look, I have to disagree with this. I mean if they are able to make Thanos screen accurate, there's no reason they can't do the same with Apoc, or any other similar looking villain like Darkseid and such.
With digital effects/CGI I'm sure they could do justice with him but it's difficult getting these guys right without and this series is reluctant on that front (which is good in many ways but not so much for characters like this).

I think the blue Apocalypse on the cover looks better than the Ivan Ooze Apocalypse we saw in the trailer and the screen shot (which is obviously an effect of the lighting). Shame he's not taller and more physically imposing. He looks of a similar height to teenage Storm. The general costume is interesting and has an Apocalypse vibe and nods to it. It's a real shame they didn't make more of an effort to be accurate with his face make-up. I imagine they could add in a darker blue Egyptian style lip make-up to fix that, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

It's kind of funny to see people forgetting that Apocalypse has been blue in the comics and animated series in several incarnations.

In the Rogue Cut commentary Singer and Ottman say that that End credits scene was a very last minute spur of the moment thing that was thrown together because Singer had been reading Chariots of the Gods and has a fascination with the idea that aliens built the pyramids. So he through that End credits scene together. They didn't spend a whole lot of time on the designs of that scene. That's why the design of Apocalypse in that scene is so minimalist and bare minimum.

Also that scene takes place 3,000 years before Apocalypse. That's a long time so some change in appearance is to be expected. All that's really different is he has a different outfit and a helmet. He can't wear that robe he was wearing in the end credits scene for thousands of years. Even immortal overlords probably get tired of the same look, and like to change it up once in a while.

More like 4,500 years before. The Giza pyramids were built around 2,500 BC.

I want to know what Power Rangers episodes y'all watching to say that's what Apocalypse looks like. Whether it's an exact replication or not, that makeup and costume work is insanely impressive.

Can't believe that's Oscar Isaac underneath all of that.

That makes sense, though somewhat disappointing then when the final product has me yearning for what was essentially a rush job.

I will say I do like the concept of the pharoah-like garb. It's just combined with the size and lack of color variety, it sticks out to me as very cosplay-like. Someone did an edit and it vastly improves what they had:

I'm just praying since they're only a few weeks into shooting, the touch-ups they intend to put haven't been fully applied yet. Everything else about the film I've loved so far.

What do you mean completely different?

For one thing, he looks different because he's wearing different clothing.

For another, he's what, thousands and thousands of years older?

Third, he was blue in DOFP, he's blue here.
This is a bit absurd to have to explain when it's plain as day the younger Apocalypse has pale blue skin, dark brows and lips, while his older variant is completely unicolor of a deep blue.

You're honestly going to say that if you were provided both individuals without context, you'd correctly guess they were of the same person at a different era?

If you see no resemblance to his comic book counterpart, you're not looking very hard.
No, I'm not, because Singer and EW have conveniently surrounded him with other characters who do. :funny:

You make a good point. Part of Apocalypse's appeal is that he looks and sounds so completely different from all the other characters around him. The contrast makes him even more exciting.

Yes, the use of the Egyptian visual elements indicates that the filmmakers understand where the character is coming from and what makes him unique. I'm fine with a few changes to his design as long as they get his character right.

The problem is , if someone would have just shown me this photo at random , with no knowledge of who it was suppose to be , and asked me to guess what comic book character it is , I would have had no idea who it was

Ugh, God, enough with the f***ing photoshops, you people.

Really? You wouldn't pick up on the fact that this character is in a blue costume that is ancient Egyptian inspired while being futuristic with tubes and cables, and not think it's Apocalypse? I would.

If they slapped dark lips on Apoc with the look he has now... we would only be hearing "why does he look so much like"...

Holy crap does that ever improve it. THAT is Apocalypse!

The lines connecting to his mouth help the most, IMO. Makes such a HUGE difference.

This is a bit absurd to have to explain when it's plain as day the younger Apocalypse has pale blue skin, dark brows and lips, while his older variant is completely unicolor of a deep blue.

Careful with the unicolor assumptions. He may well have differently shaded lips. I don't think the makeup people ignored that his lips will need to be visible in the film.

1. The younger Apocalypse is standing IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DESERT. His light blue skin is being bombarded with light. Of course he's going to look paler blue in that environment.

2. We've seen Apocalypse in the shadows, in darker settings, and in a photoshopped magazine cover. His skin is going to look darker. It's still very much light blue.

3. Even if it is darker...this character evolves. Who is to say he didn't evolve slightly darker skin for some reason?

This is a non issue.

You're honestly going to say that if you were provided both individuals without context, you'd correctly guess they were of the same person at a different era?

No. Why would anyone who doesn't know the connection or have any idea of context know these were the same character without some idea of the context (X-Men)? Don't be absurd.

As an X-Men fan? If I saw the first character in context (Egypt, etc), I'd instantly know that was a potential adaption of Apocalypse. Which most fans did figure out immediately at the end of DOFP.

And this (Isaac's version) is clearly an Apocalypse adaption, and X-fans would have known that upon seeing it as well.

No, I'm not, because Singer and EW have conveniently surrounded him with other characters who do. :funny:

Give me a bit. I'll help you out.

Looking at the image in HD. I think he has the mouth lines. They run down his cheekbones and chin. The lips curl into the cheekbone lines. They're subtle, but they're absolutely there.

Nice.
