Isn’t this movie almost five months away? How extensive is this redesign actually going to be? And it’s not like this was the first time there’s been backlash against this particular design, there was one when one the first teaser poster was released. So, why are they only making changes now?

I think they hoped that the trailer would win people over. The old "wait till you see it in motion!"

The involvement of the us government yet again is kind of getting a bit much. I understand the whole realism thing but come on. It would have been a lot cooler to not involve the military

This isn't the first time the Government is involved in a Sonic storyline. (Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic X) my only issue is that the Government isn't referred to as 'G.U.N' in this movie. Also, Neal McDonough would've been a perfect Abraham Tower, but instead he's ramdom military person.

It doesn't even look ba-

It looks bad. Every single element doesn't work.

- The nose. He looks like Kevin Bacon

- The eyes. The flesh colored skin around the eyes give him a stuffed animal look, as if his eyes are plastic and glued on to his face

- The mouth. He has human like teeth. It makes him look unsettling

- The proportions of his body. Many people have likened him to a mascot, or a human in an animal costume. Partly this is due to his human like, unexaggerated physique. He has a big head, which looks ridiculous on him since the rest of the body isn't equally as exaggerated. His hands are small. It reminds me of Mike Myers as the Cat in the Hat

- The light beige tufts of fur just add to the mascot feel of this design

I'll admit, Sonic isn't as easy a character to put on the big screen as people think, since he already has a sort of weird design to begin with. But this is taking every single element of the design and going in an even less than appealing direction.

Thanks for the clarification and explanation!

I never liked the inclusion of GUN to the Sonicverse. It worked for SA2, but I felt it was getting ridiculous as the series went on. Something about it didn't mesh well with the furry cute world Sonic was before.

That’s a pretty good summation of the Sonic franchise in general.

Sonic is a caricature style design. Just embrace it and put it in live action. Connected eyes, big pointy shoes, and big hands in white gloves. The whole thing. If the film is good, and the design is true to sonic then the audience will embrace it.

They could have also had the characters of Sonic and the villain literally come out of a Sonic video game into our real world. Looking just like they do in the video game.
For so many reasons.
1) People have been dunking on Sonic's look for months. Why are the filmmakers pretending to be surprised by the backlash?
2) Giving in to the online mob is a bad thing and it sets a bad precedent
3) See below

True. But I doubt changing Sonic's design will be enough to save the movie.

Let's just hope the VFX artists will be given enough time to fix the mess someone else has created.

:hehe:

1. I don't think they are surprised at all. However, I do think studio executives generally just don't care or they are insulated from those type of things. These are products to them. They don't really care about the quality.
2. It's not just the online mob, it's the Sonic fan community. The announcement by Jeff Fowler actually has some fans hopeful about the movie again. Rejecting and ignoring the fans also sets a bad precedent. Look at Ghostbusters and how badly that marketing campaign went.

Yes giving into the online mob is bad, but not in this case. In this case it's righteous.

I wonder how significant the changes will be? Still, I am extremely against the redesign.

They want to make this the best movie they can, I personally don't think they need to make too many changes, but if they can recolor his torso and maybe make the eyes a little bit bigger, i'm all for it.

The movie's still coming out on its original release schedule, so no worries man.

If they really want that, then they don't appear to be very good at what they do.

Well this is just...fascinating.

I don't generally see the point of adapting something if you're just going to copy existing concepts whole cloth. I don't find that especially creative. There were enough key elements included and nods to "classic design elements" that this hyperbolic backlash has frankly gotten a little ridiculous and borderline unhealthy in some cases.

But I guess Detective Pikachu made Pikachu look exactly like Pikachu and this doesn't look enough like a particular version of Sonic peope like...so here we are.

I don't think trying to appease a rigid fanbase is going to work out well, and the studio isn't going to overhaul their entire film concept, so this seems like a lost cause, but good for them for trying, I guess.

Yeah, the current design looks weird.

He's literally always looked just that, weird.

I'm in the camp of "They knew this was coming and have been working on it for a while".

Sonic didn't look weird. Sonic is a great design. That they completely messed up in this adaptation. Rigid fanbase has nothing to do with it.

There's no such thing as bad publicity. The Sonic brand hasn't gotten this much attention in years.

Seen as a joke including on late night shows ain't a good thing. I'm sure Sega doesn't want this kind of attention to the brand

I find it amazing that theres even a discussion about the plausibility of doing this in live action when Detective Pikachu brought all those eccentric cartoonish animals to life with no one complaining.

Detective Pikachu stayed incredibly faithful to the pokemon designs. That's why it was accepted.

This current Sonic design looks like a Manhog in a furry leotard with Gene Simmons hair. It bypassed uncanny valley and went straight to nightmare trench.
