Paul Dano is Edward Nashton aka "The Riddler"

View attachment 37507

Paul can clean up nicely. Especially with a good wardrobe department. It would be great seeing how much of a difference it makes for him on film.

I can imagine Paul in the classic Riddler getup.

The problem for me is instead, now that we've seen the trailer for ourselves, how very clearly that isn't what this version of the character is. I can't even begin to imagine this monstrous Zodiac-inspired Riddler ditching his get-up for a green suit get-up with custom question mark printings on it, with a matching bowler hat to top it all off.

Why not? Gorshin’s Riddler alternated between suits. Hell, John Wayne Gacy didn’t always dress up like a clown. Ted Bundy wore ski masks and pantyhose over his face, but wore eccentric looking outfits. Monsters don’t always look like monsters. This could literally just be Riddler’s kill suit. As for the bowler hat, I don’t think there will be one. Also, there may not be question marks all over the suit.

You have to be able to look past that bowler hat look that’s in your head and think of something more practical. For example: instead of question marks all over the suit, Riddler could wear a paisley green suit with a question mark pin on his tie.

Also keep in mind that he isn’t fully formed. He’s only just beginning.

I've said this in an earlier post in this thread, but just seeing the clips of this Riddler, he doesn't look like someone who would even own a suit. The details of the costume make me think he's perhaps ex military, someone who lives on the outskirts of society. He wears a utility jacket, which is fairly common, but the cold weather mask is a very specific detail. Some have said he just doesn't want his clothing bloody when out killing people, but if that were the case, why an army jacket? Why the cold weather mask? Why wouldn't he just wear the kind coveralls painters wear? The plastic glasses over his mask, the use of duct tape, everything about him that we've seen is antithetical to style, certainly the kind of style we typically associate with the Riddler.

Even if he isn't "fully formed", I don't see this Riddler becoming more stylish.

This comes from the same comic where a Billionaire playboy goes out at night dressed up as a militarized bat to beat criminals to a bloody pulp. Would it not be genius for a psychopath to use household items and dress inconspicuously to commit his murders in order to avoid detection?

The movie is probably about him making his suit, with little question marks made from the skin of his victims.

An extreme cold weather mask isn't something you have lying around the house. And the Riddler doesn't look remotely inconspicuous.

What if this is it for him, in terms of costume? People seem determined to see him wear a suit, for some reason.

I’m actually ok if this is his main look. It’s his kill outfit and I love it. It replaces the spandex and domino mask. Though it’s not like he’s never ever going to change clothes. At least that’s what I believe.

I mean, even soldiers clean up put on their uniform. Even the Zodiac killer was said to have a clean cut to himself. The Zodiac himself stated in his letter that he only looked like his description when he “does his business” and that he looks completely different. For all we know he could have worn very nice outfits when he wasn’t killing. That’s how he was able to get away so easily. So, I’m still not seeing why The Riddler wouldn’t wear a suit because he wears cold weather gear.

I can totally see it, though I'm not anticipating one in this film. I think Dano as Riddler is actually very inspired casting for this film.

the nice thing is there doesn't seem to be any indication they're going to be killing off villains. would like to see dano's riddler move closer to his comic book look throughout the film(s).

I could see him adopting the more cocky, Riddle compulsion stuff. My 3 theories as are now are

1. He kills himself when Batman catches him as kinda like an "F you, I got away with it"

2. He gets Epsteined basically, mainly if the Court Of Owls theories are true they see that he knows too much so they kill him.

3. He stays on as a Hannibal type in later films and Batman occasionally goes to him for information.

I like all of those ideas tbh. The third one could work like Calender Man or something, just feeding Batman clues through riddles. Maybe he establishes a big information network through the city, and always knows what's going on in Gotham, even while in Arkham

There is an option #4, i.e., he gets arrested at the end and we don't see him again in any of the other films.

As far as Riddler's design goes, I've never been big on the jacket riddled- Ha!- with question marks. Though I didn't mind it on Frank Gorshin. I don't dislike it, and if there's a question mark on the hat, that's fine. But I've always been fond of the simple green suit and a tie, similar to the Animated Series or even what Cory Michael Smith had in Gotham until the series finale.

So unless it's just the green trench coat indefinitely, I do wonder how Dano's Riddler may look if he changes things up.

Since Dano’s Riddler is heavily influenced by the Zodiac Killer, even down to the military attire, I was thinking something like this with the black shirt, fancy green tie, question mark buttons and a question mark on his the back.

A trench coat also lines up with the whole military style as well since they were created for Army officers in WW1.

I’d love for it to be really stylish and trim. Maybe a material like suede or something like that.
