I would've pegged this as a David O Russell film based on the trailer. It has a I Heart Huckabees vibe.

Joaquin Phoenix looks great! Showing some great comedy chops as well at the end and with my favorite part - "Did I get you!?"

Finally! More than any other PTA film, this trailer reminded me of Boogie Nights, and that made me happy. Can't wait.

Doesn't look bad at all. I don't see any of that Jim Abrams/David Zucker Airplane vibe Paul Thomas Anderson was talking about though. It has a strong David O'Russell vibe... like PT Anderson saw American Hustle and kinda based his directorial and visual style on it. It might be a big success along the lines of Hustle if audiences shine to it like critics will.

But Owen Wilson just sticks out like a sore thumb. Everyone else seems perfectly cast... save him. Ugh.

Owen Wilson and the framing on a couple of shots made me think of Wes Anderson. Looks a lot more comedic than I would have guessed. Course I don't know anything about the book.

Owen Wilson usually stick out like a sore thumb, save for a few projects.

Ya? you got that from his 5 word sentence huh? can't take a a comment serious when it ends with something that baseless

Got a Boogie Nights vibe from the trailer. Looks real good.

He's usually the detractor in most of his films, but he was perfect in Midnight in Paris. Woody Allen cast that film perfectly.

He has a limited range, and it's not helped by his Texas twang. It's equally annoying as Matthew McConaughey's.

The best thing about the trailer, which was edited so damn well (I like quick close-up of Doc's ex girlfriend puckering up lips in mid-whisper) is the cinematography.

I read some comments that PTA like to color corrected the old school way: through chemicals.

Even movies shot on film go through color correction digitally, but not PTA's films. That's why the movie looks crisp and modern but you can buy it being an 'older film' just by the way the colors look. Modern but strangely vintage. Beautiful stuff.

Nah. O'Russell wishes his movie looked this good.

This is very true. Midnight in Paris is in my Top 10 favorite films

And David O'Russell took from Goodfellas and Boogie Nights. If someone else compares DOR to PTA...I will lose my other eye. :BA

Yeah. O. Russell has clearly been inspired by Boogie Nights. I'm kind of surprised so many people seem surprised by the tone of the trailer. All of PTA's films are litered with humor and he's said from day one that this was a Cheech and Chong film. Similar to Boogie Nights and Punch Drunk Love, I think this film will be hilarious as well as filled with substance.

What a fantastically edited trailer! Wonderful stuff.

And all due respect to O Russel (I love Silver Lining) but this trailer alone feels more visually striking and at the same time also more authentic than anything similar Russel has done.

If anything, PTA seems influenced by himself, from Boogie Nights. :)

Love it.

Some people are now thinking PTA is stealing Russel's style? LOL.

Russel wishes American Hustle looked this good. As presumptuous as this may sound, this will probably be much better. Which isn't all that hard to do.

But this trailer was wonderful. It does indeed seem more akin to Boogie Nights. With a little bit of the Coens in there.

But everything looks top notch PTA. Love the tone, love the cinematography. Dat 70's vibe is really catchy. PTA, noir, with wacky comedy is just a crazy, winning combination.
